My daughter and I just got home from a trip to Myrtle, MS. We went to the
Gerzim Cemetery. We found several graves with spelling Coffey. We took
pictures. I will post names when we get pictures developed. One of the
Coffeys married a Dodds. Betty.

Surname:
-------------------------
My ancestor's name has come down through time as " Arthur
Coffield ", although I have found his surname in so many spelling and phonetic
variations that I cannot limit my research to the surname Coffield or Caufield
or any definite
spelling or pronunciation. His daughter, Ruth married William Martin in
Champaign County Ohio in 1820. In her marriage record, the name is Ruthey
Coffey. Her brother was known as John C Coffield of Clark County Ohio.
Biographical information about the origin in Ireland exists and the story
comes down that he (Arthur)came to America in about 1772-3; however, unknown
is the rest of the story, i.e. where in Ireland, name of wife and mother
of Arthur's children, even Arthur's burial location, remain mysteries.
I have a very strong suspicion that because of the spelling and phonetic
variations of the surname, I am not making connections with others who
are descended from this family group from Ireland who came to America just
prior to the Revolutionary War.
