I, had previously reported my Alexander Cofer B. 1852, was a brother to Clay Cofer, not so, cousins'. So many Cofer's out there around Rhea/Roane CO.S looking for one another. But all are from the NC Clan that appeared first in 1812 with young Abraham & James (they were cousins-too) Then around 1820 Jonathon showed up as did older Thomas Cofer from VA. VIA NC.? The NC clan is headed by grandfather Old James Cofer B. 1740'S in Culpepper, VA.> This Thomas, is the father of James, Willis, Jonathon & younger Thomas. Think old Thomas came to raise the grandkids & help out with James/ Willis' family (check out the 1830 Federal censes)(see all the young ones in Old Thomas' house) By 1840 Thomas has passed (doesn't show up anymore him his wife Elizabeth Taylor Cofer have both disappeared) From there the family flowered out, with the Willis, Martin, Crow(e), Clark's to mention the few. So many of the Cofer clan kept naming their offsprings after Brothers, Gfatheres and some some fr!
om last names of Families they married into. There are two Alexanders, mine from the James line B. 1852 & another Alex (Elix)(B.1884) Also from the James line, but a Brothers boy to the older Alexander.( Bannister Cofer B. 1863) This just adds to all the confusion, but all are related one way or another. I don't use this message board much, and just found your reply.
You mentioned Masonic papers. Were they from Nashville? He was a Mason there.

Hi Linda, In digging around for my Cofers I collected plenty of data. There
really are a lot of records online in regard to this surname so keep
digging. Maybe you won't have to spend so much money on the records as a lot are
already posted. Barbara

Barbara, thanks for your help. I have no idea where my Cofer family came
from. I recently started looking for them when I found the death
certificate for one of my Johnson kin and it listed his mother as Margaret
Cofer of VA. I found Margaret living with her father and mother on the 1850
Census in the Eastern District of Isle of Wight, VA. Margaret married Jesse
Johnson (also from the Eastern District, Isle of Wight) and by 1880 was
living in Guilford Co, NC where their descendants live today. I did find
Thomas Cofer on the 1830 and 1840 census for Isle of Wight and there are
numerous Cofers on the Isle of Wight census, probably relatives but hard to
tell given the way they did the census before 1850. After 1850, Thomas and
his wife, Willie are not on any census. I guess it is going to come down to
digging for wills, land records and such. I am hopeful that there is
another person in this line who is working on it and willing to
collaborate. Again, thanks for the response, Linda
I have done a lot of research on the Cofers and have tracked them through
many variations of the spelling and from Wilkes County, GA back to Charles
County, Maryland and Port Tobacco area. They also were associated with
Virginia but have not had time to do a workup on that area. Thomas Withers Cofer
was a solver for me and maybe could get you going too. I looked in my
current database and yours was not in there, probably due to him being born in
the 1800's while most of mine is during the 1700's. My first Cofer
connection was Elizabeth Frances Cofer, daugher of Joseph Benjamin Cofer in Wilkes
County, Ga. Good luck and I will be happy to answer what questions I can
about the Cofers as needed. Barbara in Texas

Looking for any information or leads on my family in Isle of Wight VA.
Thomas E Cofer was first listed on the 1840 Census for the Eastern District
with his wife and family. In 1850, he was still living in the Eastern
District, age 43, with his wife - Willie and two daughters and a son. One
daughter, Margaret is my line. I am hoping to find someone from this family
to compare notes with. Please contact me if you have any information or
clues about this family. Linda
