Hello Jacqueline, We have no Abe Cofer and the only David Cofer we have (b.1843 Roane, Tn.) appears to be a brother to my great-grandfather Zachariah Taylor Cofer. Funny how names crop up: We have two Cofer sisters that appeared to marry 2 Tedder bros. Louisa Jane Cofer (b. 5-11-1831) M. Wm. Alfonso Tedder (b. 6-24-1828) and Susan Catherine Cofer (b. Nov. 13, 1835) married James Pleasant Tedder (b. 1832)

background further back?

I have never seen the information refeerenced about Coffey becoming Cofer/Coffer. Does anyone out there know the source of this information? I am a descendant of John Cofer who landed in VA, then moved to Portobacco, MD in the mid 1660's. I have not found the ancestor of this John, so was very interested in the data, but would like to have some background on this.
You might be interested in reading my article, Where is Jesse Copher Buried in Boone County, MO? in the Genealogical Society of Central Missouri, Reporter, Vol. 25, no. 1 (Jan/Feb 2006), pages 17-21. Because of a deed restriction Elizabeth Boone placed on a parcel of land she sold in 1830, it is clear that either 1) Jesse's remains were reburied at the Copher Family Cemetery, or 2) he is buried in an unmarked grave in E, SW, S8, T49N, R14W (where he was living at the time of his death). I believe that Jesse's remains are buried in the Copher Family Cemetery, but that they were moved there sometime between 1831 and 1855 (about the time Elizabeth died?). Samuel Copher, Jesse's grandson and owner of the cemetery until his death in 1876, probably moved Jesse's remains because the family no longer owned the original burial site.
I refer to the cemetery as the Copher Family Cemetery and not the Copher Homestead Cemetery as did DAR because Jesse and his sons, Thomas and Samuel B, originally bought land primarily in and next to T49N R14W (today eastern Howard Co and western Boone Co). Members of the family did not begin to acquire land in T50N R13W (northern Boone Co) for at least 10 years after moving to MO. Jesse never bought any land in T50N R13W. Jesse's grandson, Samuel, purchased or acquired the title to NW, Section 5, T 50 R13 W (site of the cemetery) in 1836 - he may have homesteaded the land in late 1820s or early 1830s, but the recorders are unclear.
Also, I can find no documentation as to when and where Elizabeth Boone died. I assume she died about 1855 (as Spraker indicated) in southwestern Audrain Co. or northern Boone Co. As a side point, you might also be interested in reading my article, Elizabeth, Daughter of George & Nancy Boone in The Boone Society's Compass, Vol. 8, Issue 2 (April 2004), pages 11-14. I wrote this article before I discovered the deed transaction I referred above.

Jesse and Elizabeth were my 4th great grandparents.
I would be pleased to exchange information about the Cofer/Copher family.
