What is the correct death year for Reuben Cofer? 1839 or 1840?
Kentucky Agency Rolls of Revolutionary Pensioners, The Kentucky Genealogist;
April-June 1959: Vol. 1 (2): Page 15, Coffer, Reuben, Corp. Died 28 October,
1839.
Whereas, Gency Coffer application for Reuben's pension states: 12 Sept.
1853. Bath Co., Kentucky. Gincey (X) Coffer of said county, aged 72,
declares she is widow of Reuben Coffer. She was married 24 Feb. 1826 and
her husband died 28 Oct. 1840, and she is still his widow.

Another thought, could Gencey have only used her middle name (Jane) when
first applying for her husband's pension, then corrected it later for her
formal given name? It's common for people to only use their middle name on
many documents, but some legal documents require their entire name.
Another interesting element is this mystery is that the second child of
Reuben and Unknown was JANE!
Have fun.

Have you visited the Copher, Cofer Family site on My Family. com? It has
much information and the members might be able to assist you. Ray Copher, I
believe, is the administrator of the site and he has a wealth of information
on the Copher, Cofer family.
According to Ray: Reuben's first wife was Unknown and their children were
Mary, Jane, and Cynthia. His second wife was Gencey McClahan and their
child was Hiram. Ray gives Gencey middle name as Jane.
Sounds to me like Jane may have been Reuben's first wife and that they were
divorced - which was rare for that period and having three children. Or,
Jane could have been an imposter of Reuben's first wife, who had died
between 1810 and 1826. I think Reuben was too old to be a bigamist. But,
these are only my thoughts without documentation. Just exploring ideas to
be tested.
Good luck and please keep the board informed of your findings.

that Jane Coffer, widow of Reuben Coffer, requests a copy of her
husband's pension declaration.

Does anyone know who Jane was? Did he have two wives or was Jane a first wife? If he divorced her she might have thought she still deserved his pension. I have been led to believe that my Mary Cofer who married Reuben P. Moore was the daughter of Reuben and Jane Cofer. Mary was born about 1804 in Bath Co., KY. Gincy didn't marry Reuben until 1826. Reuben would have been around 66 years old by then.
