In reply to the message about Hardin Cofer (below), I would appreciate a
little assistance with the family line from Thomas and Mary to Hardin.
Below is what I have in my data base on possible connections. I eliminated
my information about others.
I would be pleased to exchange information.
Thanks
Chet

Hardin was a brother (possibally a twin brother) to my gg grandfather Willis C. Cofer. B. abt 1821 in Roane CO., TN. Their father was James Cofer & Abergrill who died (possibally giving birth) Their g father was Thomas Cofer & Elizabeth Taylor from Bedford CO. VA. Who's father was Thomas T. Cofer D. 1791 Cullpepper CO., VA. James shows up in TN. about 1812, in time to Vol. for the War 1812. (Vet.of that war) What makes them so hard to trace is not having documentation on their mother Abergrill no last name, and I, think their g father Thomas & Elizabeth Cofer raised them. There is a doc. on file (Vetrans pension application "Widows") nameing Abergrill (deceased) & 2 young children of James Cofer.

Hi - According to "Culpeper County Marriages 1781-1815" Page 51, Rhoda Coffer married Stephen Ham on 8 April 1782, minister George Eve, Baptist. She is the daughter of James Cofer and Partheney. James lived in Culpeper County Virginia where a deed is recorded that he sold 105 acres to George Eve in 1779. By 1787 he moved to Amherst Co Virginia and by 1800 he moved to Stokes Co North Carolina where he died 10 March 1816 (he left a will). I don't have any further info on Rhoda - hope this helps.

I'm new to this board, so I'll give a little introduction. I have been researching Jesse and Elizabeth Copher for a number of years. They were my 4x grandparents. I would be pleased to exchange information with others researching Jesse, Elizabeth, or their siblings. Below is the information I have about the children of Thomas and Mary Cofer, for which I'm indebted to Ray Copher for much of it.
If you are interested in a biographical sketch of Elizabeth and Jesse, you might be interested in reading my article, Elizabeth, Daughter of George and Nancy Boone, in the Compass, vol. 8., Issue 2, April 2004, pages 11-14 - newsletter of The Boone Society, Inc. (www.boonesociety.org)

Gary,
Good to hear from you. I've been back to MO a number of times since 1988 and met a lot of cousins that I hadn't met before. Couldn't remember Everett White's name, but that name was on the property when I first saw the plat map. Some second cousins grew up in that house--Flossie Cook Thompson and Bonnie Cook Raper. Their parents were John and Sophie (Lee) Cook, John being the son of Margaret (Coffer) Cook. Flossie told me about her great uncles Davis and F.S. "Sig" Coffer walking up through their property to get to the Union City store, and Sig usually brought Flossie and Bonnie some candy when he came back through there. He'd tease them and tell them he had to save some for his boy, although Sig never married and as far as is known, didn't have any children.
(Elizabeth (Estes) White's parents (and my gggrandparents), John Calder and Margaret (Jones) Estes, Hardin and Sarah (Estes) Coffer, some of their children and one of my aunts (Tella) are buried in Mt Carmel Cemetery, along with a number of family members of Mary (Coffer) Lane. Bonnie Cook Raper is buried there. I believe she died in June 1998. The last time I was there (in 1999) Margaret Estes' head stone was barely visible and I didn't see John Calder's headstone.
A number of the Cooks are buried in the Mollie Wright Cemetery just down the road. My grandparents, James F. and Ida Coffer are buried in Aurora in Maple Park Cemetery, along with a number of their children.
I work in fits and starts on genealogy stuff. Since you'fe relatively new I hope you're familiar with the Stone County Web site, Stone County Historical and Genealogical Society, the Galena library where the SCHGS materials are (or were)housed. The Ozark Library has an extensive number of resources. I've never managed to get to the Genealogical Library in Springfield.
The reason I was born in the house on Rock Street: my grandparents moved into that house in the early 1890's when the moved to Aurora from Stone Co. My mother and most of her siblings were born there; my mother was the youngest. When she became pregnant with me, my folks left CA so I could be born in my grandmother's house. Ida lived there until 1944 when she sold the house and moved to CA with us. . Hope to see you this summer.

I have been dabbling in geneaology only a short time. But have found it interesting. If you come to Aurora this summer give me a call 417-678-2670 the only trip we have planned is to S.C. for my oldest son's wedding in May. I know Naomi White. She is the widow of my dad's cousin Everett White who past away a few years back. Naomi still lives on the same property. I remember visiting there when I was young. I don't know if you have ever been there, but you might try to visit the White Cemetery south of Clever, Mo.Many of our relatives are buried there as well as the Mt. Carmel Cemetery. I recently (last week) found the gravestone of Margaret Cofer-White-Underwood at a cemetery in Neosho, Mo.If you ever find anything on Jonathon White's father let me know. Interesting you were born in Aurora, I know about where that home is. My dad grew up on Park St in Aurora which is not very far from there. Please look me up when you come to Mo. Gary

Gary,
For years, all I knew about the Whites was what I read in a book in the Galena library--that Jonathan's mother was Margaret Coffer White and her father was a Joel Coffer. I knew that Jonathan and Margaret were related to my great grandfather Hardin Coffer. I also knew that Jonathan's wife, Elizabeth, was a sister to my ggrandmother, Sarah Estes Coffer. I just recently received a lot of information on Hardin's family. If I remember correctly, you live in Aurora. I wrote a reply to you before, but I think my computer "ate" it. I was born in Aurora in my grandparent's house on 329 E. Rock Street but have lived in CA most of my life. I'm planning to come to MO in July, and I have some questions I'd like to ask you, like was the Benjamin White who married Vada Frazier in Miami, OK a descendant of Jonathan and Elizabeth White? I saw a bit of Vada and Benjamin White's son, RT, when I was a kid, here in CA. Vada was a "double cousin." Her father, John A. Frazier, the brother of my g!
randmother Ida (Frazier) Coffer, and her mother was a niece of my grandfather, James F. Coffer. Sarah Cook was the niece and she was a daughter of John Monroe and Margaret (Coffer) Cook. Also, I had a deed that I donated to the Stone County Historical Society of some property that Sarah Coffer bought in 1872. When I've looked at plat maps in recent years, it showed Whites owning the property. On the 1997 map it said the property was owned by Naomi White. Relations?

You seem to have quite a bit of info on some of my family. Margaret Cofer-White-Underwood was my ggggrandmother. Her son Jonathon White was my gggrandfather. Do you have any firm information on Jonathon's father? Was he Joseph D. White or John White? I have read both and seem to have hit a wall. Thanks Gary White

Baldwin died June 19,1880 at the ripe old age of 89 years and 11 months. According to the tombstone he was born July 15,1790. The stone is very old but still very ledgible. The top of the stone was broken off but Baldwin's name was on one side and Margaret's name on the other side. I got lucky when I found it. The cemetery is pretty big but I started looking in the oldest part and it was among the oldest graves.Margaret died in 1863. It is right next to the main street that goes by the cemetery.

What info on Hardin Cofer I have is that he was born in 1821 in Tn.Married Sarah Estes in 1845. Shortly thereafter moved to stone county, Mo. They raised 7 children John,Margaret,Mary,Samuel,Sarah,Davis, and James.Hardin fought for the Union Army as a Lt.He was wounded at Pea Ridge Ark. and died near Springfield,Mo (The Battle of Wilson's Creek)from either results of his wounds or Pneumonia in 1862 at the age of 41. I have no info on him prior to 1821.I did read that the Cofer family moved to Meigs Co. Tn. from Culpepper Co. Va. so you might try to research there for more Cofer history. I haven't connected Hardin to Margaret Cofer White Underwood.(my ggggrandmother)But I am sure they were probably related.Since they came from about the same part of the country.Margaret was born in 1793, and died in 1863 so she was a bit older than Hardin (maybe an aunt) I recently found the graves of Baldwin Underwood and Margaret at the IOOF Cemetery in Neosho, Mo.Hope this helps.
