Kathy,
You're the source of the information I have about Willis. I still haven't determined who Willis' and Hardin's parents were, although I know from Census data that they were born in NC. I traced some of the threads of this information and I think it's possible that our ancestors were part of that VA group, but someone went to NC, probably before 1800. Rick Cofer has traced his ancestry to a William Cofer in NC. I'd like to know more about him, and when he was in NC. Margaret Coffer White (mother of Jonathan White) and her father Joel Coffer are related somehow to Hardin and Willis. Hardin and Sarah named their second child/first daughter Margaret. She was born while they were in TN.
My generation line is somewhat shorter than yours: Hardin>James F.>Maxine Coffer Johnson>me and my sister Kathleen. My sister is in her mid-late fifties, and her great grandfather died 143 years ago! My grandfather James, was the next to last child born to Hardin and Sarah, and James was at least 13 years older than his wife, Ida F. Frazier. My mother was the youngest of 8; James died on my mother's 9th birthday in Dec. 1920. A lot of the orally transmitted information didn't get written down, and there's really no one to double check it with now. I guess I need to have one of my sons tested for the Cofer DNA project to help trace some ancestry. I don't think there are any of Hardin's direct descendants bearing the Cofer/Coffer name living.
If you want to contact me directly, my e-mail address is now: johnsongirl39(a)verizon.net,
Does anyone on this list have Cofers from GA? My husband's father was James
Everett Cofer, his g'father was Warren Cofer, who marr Rachel SELLERS.
Warren was b in Newton Co., GA, and d in 1951 in Porterdale, Newton Co., GA.
I still have two sisters-in-law living in GA, but neither one is at all
interested in their ancestors. I'm really frustrated at not being able to talk
them into helping a little, at least. Both have children, so I'd think they'd
want to find out all they could. But they have the very stubborn streak that
my children have definately inherited!
If anyone has any info on this branch. I'd dearly love to hear from you!!
Barbara in MO (but originally from NYC)
P.S. James Everett married Cassie MARTIN.

Pat,
Imagine my surprise when your posting popped up this morning. Willis C Cofer was my ancestor, Banister> Alexander> Robert>Leonard Cofer. I have chased him for years and finally ran him aground in Nashville, Tn. What information do you have on Hardin? I am looking for parents. Which of the Cofer group do you think they are from? I have, of course, several different things that do not give solid clues. Please email me back so we can compare notes.

Rick,
I'd like to know more about your line and how it traces to that William Cofer in North Carolina. I suspect we're related. Here's what I know so far:
My great grandfather, John Hardin Coffer, was born in TN in 1821. I recently found out that he had a twin brother Willis, who stayed in TN. Hardin married Sarah Estes in 1845 in Roane, CO TN. I have heard that Willis stood up with Hardin when he and Sarah married, but Hardin didn't when Willis married his wife Nancy ?? Hardin and Sarah moved to Stone Co. MO about 1849. From census data, I know that Hardin's parents were both born in NC. Early in the 1850's one of Sarah's sisters, Elizabeth, and her husband Jonathan White moved to Stone Co. from TN also, and I know they were close. From a book which I think is titled Reminiscences of the Ozark Region, I learned that Jonathan White's mother was a Margaret Coffer White, and her father was Joel Coffer, both born in NC. I know Margaret Coffer White was related to Hardin, but I'm not sure how. I can't get to my other notes right now, so I've forgotten which TN county Hardin was born in. Both Hardin and Willis died in the Civil War!
. Willis fought for the ; confederacy and disappeared in the Union prison camps. Hardin was a lt in the cavalry, fighting for the Union. I have contradictory information about Hardin's cause of death and even his length of service, but he died in April 1862. There were some other Coffers that settled in Christian Co. MO but I haven't gotten that information from an Estes cousin who lives less than 12 miles away.
I work on genealogy in fits and starts because I'm still working "parttime" and I do most of that via e-mail, phone, and some traveling, working out of my home. So if I don't get around to responding right away, it's not because I'm not interested.

Pat, I just read a email you posted in jun of 04. I guess this is a bit late but as they say better later than never. In the last few years I have been able to trace my lineage back the William Cofer in NC. I was born in Jackson, Tenn. If you get this email and want to, write and we can compare notes.
