George W Shutley was most likely the son of Peter Shetley; they were both in the 1840 Gwinette County census and Peter was in the 1830 Gwinette census as Shutley. Peter was one of the sons of Jacob Shutley/Shetley/Schöttle of Lincoln County, North Carolina, having arrived in Philadelphia in 1751 from Rotterdam and Cowes. Peter appears in the 1800, 1810 and 1820 Lincoln censuses.
