I am looking for information on Willis C Cofer and Hardin Coffer. Possibley twin brothers (dispite the spelling difference) born in April of 1821. They fought on opposite sides of the Civil War. Hardin was with the 14th MO Militia and W C (Willis) with Carter's Cav. in east and middle TN and was recruited form Rhea County, TN. Hardin dies in a mysterious mishap in 1862 and Willis is captured at the Battle of Stones River and disappears into the Nashville Union Prision.
Please if you have any information on either man please contact me!

Hi!
My maiden is Cofer. My particular branches are form the Rhea and Roane Counties area. My ggg grandfather was Willis C Cofer. My gg grandfather was Banister Cofer and my g grandfather was Alexander Cofer. I am trying to trace down Willis. He disappears into the Union POW Camps after his capture at Stones River and imprisionment at Nashville. His twin brother Hardin Coffer (Note spelling difference) dies in the Union Army, 14th MO Militia in a mysterious accident. No information listed on death or pension to ancestary. Please check your records for Willis, b.1821 married 1845 Nancy Smith captured 1863. Coincidently both brothers died or disappeared at about the same time.

My grandfather, Joe Madison Coffer, was born June 29, 1894 in Tennesee. The original spelling of his name was Cofer, but they got his birth certificate wrong when he had to aquire one for a social security no. and the name was changed. According to this birth certificate, his mother's maiden name was Jocia White and there were other live births listed but no names. Joe Madison was brought to Texas by his father as a toddler and was raised by his older sister Susie Balew (somewhere around Granger,TX). Susie was a daughter from a previous marrige and she had full sister, Drudie. No one on this end of the family ever heared from Willian again. He is thought to have passed away somewhere around Henderson Co., TX. If anyone has any information on Willian Cofer or his geneology it would be appreciated.

Chris,
Sorry. I'm new to this. The above reply with the author listed as "Thomas Copher [Coffer] & Olive Ward" was written by me.

Chris,
Actually, I believe your line [and mine] does go to Thomas Copher [Coffer] who married Oliffe [Olive] Ward and who's will is dated 1783 and was recorded in 1784.
Years ago I came across a reference in the Main Street branch of the Newport News Public library to a document titled "Cofer [family] of Surry and Isle of Wight [counties], Virginia, 1784-1908" written by our long deceased cousin Wesley Randolf Cofer, Jr. (who is a descendant of John Randolf & Rebecca Bell Cofer through their first child George Wesley Cofer and one of his children Wesley Randolf Cofer). The Main Street Library did not have a copy of the document (so I have not yet seen it), but the reference noted that the five page hand-written document was microfiched by the Geneological Society of Utah in Salt Lake City in 1990 and is now part of the Family History Library Catalogue of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Despite my not having seen a copy of the document, the reference at the Main Street Library did contain a short abstract on the contents. It states, "Thomas Coffer, son of John and Jane (Bennet) Coffer, lived in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. He married Oliffe (Olive) Ward, daughter of Thomas Ward. His will was dated 1783 and recorded 1784. Descendants lived in Virginia".
Logically, Thomas Copher [Coffer/Cofer] must be in our line since the author (who is our cousin) has documented that person to be in his line. I strongly suspect that if you can get a copy of "Cofer [family] of Surry and Isle of Wight [counties], Virginia, 1784-1908" it will fill in all the gaps between Thomas Copher [Coffer/Cofer] and John Randolf & Rebecca Bell Cofer.
Please let me know if you do get a copy. I'd love to see it.
Respectfully,
Pete Cofer

I am an amateur geneologist. I have done much work on the Cofer family who lived in Bedford County Virginia during the 1700's through the 1800's. I would like to swap any information available.
Sincerely,
Joe Cofer
