Thank you for your reply. Some of my records on the Cofers do not agree with yours and mine are probably not as reliable as yours. I show Thomas Cofer (Copher) married Olive Ward and his will was dated 3 November 1783 in Isle of Wight, Virginia. He had a daughter Charity who married Jesse Holleman my g.g.g.g.g. grandfather. According to my records, Thomas' father was John Coker married to a Jane Unknown (probably Bennett according to your records). John's father was William Coker married to Margaret Cartwright. My Thomas Cofer who married Olive Ward had a son named Thomas according to his will. One of his grandson's, Moody Cofer, is named in the will. Is it possible your Thomas who married Elizabeth Moody is the son of my Thomas who had a grandson named Moody Cofer? I have a copy of my Thomas Cofer's will. Maybe we can sort this out between us.

Most of my family migrated from Maryland to SC to Georgia. I know there were several Cofer brothers or cousins that also went to Virginia.
I am not sure if this is a clue that will help or not, but I have a Thomas Cofer listed in "The Wilkes County Papers" (in GA) in 1831 that shows three children, Martha, Ann and John. They are 16, 12 and 14 in 1831. The age takes them back to about the time you were looking for James Thomas or Joseph. I know these may not be the ones, but perhaps it is a lead. I would be interested in staying in touch as I still have some needs to confirm some of my line in the late 1700's. Feel free to contact me directly at debsc(a)computron.net

Joe,
Since you are a brave soul do you have any records for a James Thomas Coffer b 1813 or a Joesph Coffer b. 1814? I believe that they may be form Culpepper, VA. I am still tracking down Willis C Cofer of Rhea County and this is the latest tracks I have found for that illusive relative.

Dawn: Your Aunt Jessie cannot be my male Jesse ancestor. He was born in 1756 in Virginia. Perhaps your aunt is a descendant also, but she is not in my direct line so I can't check it out. There seems to be ample research on this family, so I'm sure you will find the connection if one exists. Good luck.
Cathy

I have responded to one of your notes before. In the meantime, I have visited Rayles and made many more contacts and established some firm relationships. I have found gravesites for many Cofers buried in the area.
My family is from the Rayles area. I have a lot of information on Cofers from Rayles and Beaver Dam. My father was born there, but moved to Texas as a child after his father died. We are descendants of John then Matthew , then Walter. It is intersting that Matthew had a brother with first name of either Clayborn or possibly Claybrook.
You mentioned Henry. Henry J had a daughter, Georgia or Georgette that married Matthew. She is listed as a cousin to Matthew, but several times removed. She is the second wife of my gggrandfather. My ggrandmother was his first wife, Eugenia Callaway. I have some local contacts from this family. I would be happy to share my information if you would send me your email address. My email address is debsc(a)computron.net
