Anne,
When I first came across the name Ellen Cohen I researched several sites in hope of finding the exact connection of Ellen to my family. In Ballygar there was several Coen families. I had pulled info from Ellis Island, Griffiths Val and Family Search (Mormon web site) and would like to provide. It seems the Coen's not only went to NY but also Baltimore (cousins and not siblings) I also believe I have info on the marriage date of Martin and Julia. It seems Julia was sometimes known as Judith. If you send me an E Mail address I will send you the info.
Best wishes and it is great to find a connection. My E Mail is KC19567(a)aol.com
Kevin

Hi
I drew out a type of tree and it seems that you must be correct about my grandmother being a cousin once removed to Kate Carr Conway. So are we cousins 3 times removed? Or did I miss a generation?
Wouldn't it be great to be able to go back one more generation to see if Margaret Kyne Quinn (your ggrandmother) is a sister to Martin Coen (my ggrandfather)?
Have you ever been to the church in Newbridge for records? It was incredible but the woman in the rectory knew of my grandmother and her family (She's the one who sent me over to Mary Mockler's house). My grandmother's records were missing because all the records from 1872-1876 were missing but her brother was there. I never thought to look for Coyne or Kyne while I was there. I can give you my grandmother's sibs and their husbands, children etc. if you like.
I have cousins close to Tuam. They actually live halfway between Tuam and Headford. They are Burkes. They are related to me through my grandfather who emigrated from Corrundulla a few years before my grandmother came over.
Thanks for everything....This is so interesting.

Any links to a John Coen born around 1845? He had brothers Daniel and James and immigrated to NY around 1890s. John wife MaryAnne Devaney was from Posses Point Co. Sligo.

Hello Anne
I do not mind sharing at all the info I have gathered. A few years ago a woman from Galway living in Arizona was very kind and sent me compies of birth, death and marriage records from the 1860's-1870's. I had some info on the family-if your grandmother and Kate Conway were first cousins than my grandfather, Michael Carr, was also you grandmather's first cousin. I know Kate Conway's grandparent's were Bartly Quinn and Margaret Kyne (or Coen). So it would seem that your grandmother was the daughter of Martin Coen-who was probably a brother to Margaret Kyne (Coen). My hunch is your grandmother was a first cousin to Kate Conway's mother--(Catherine Quinn Carr--daughter of Bartlly and Margaret Coen Quinn). This would have made Kate Conway a first cousin once removed to your grandmother--this once removed means one generation removed from the true first cousins. The Irish would generally refer to them as first cousins--it gets confusing. Seeing your grandmother's birth name!
was Coen and Kate Conway's mother's name was Quinn and it was Kate Conway's grandmother was a Coen--it is at that point we have the brother sister connection.)--I hope this makes sense.
I have a copy of the birth register for two of Bartly Quinn and Margaret Kyne (Coen's) children. One lists her name as Kyne and the other as Coen.
I live in Virginia--after having lived in California for nine years and Connecticut for five years and Queens for seven years. I worked in Dublin for a year in the 1980's and met all the relatives--My wife's father is from Tuam and one of her aunt's live in Menlough--where my grandmother hailed --she married Michael Carr
I will gladly share info. I am still curious on the Ellen Coen who brought our queries together--she must have been somehow related to Martin Coen (your grgrandfather) and my grgrgrandmother Margeret Coen Quinn.
I will put the info in a form that may make some sense.
Take care
Kevin

Hi
I just took a few minutes to check out your info and I'm still thinking....Kate Carr was my gmother's first cousin ( according to Mary Mockler). So don't cousins share the same grandparents? So would that make Margaret Kyne Quinn my grgrgrandmother, too?
I met one of the priests when I was at Mary Mockler's house several years ago. The other was upstairs asleep as he had just arrived that morning from the US...We exchanged Christmas cards for a year or two and then stopped.
You have a lot more family info than I do. I never went back farther than my grgrandparents...Do you mind sharing?
If you are interested I can give you info on my grandmother's siblings and their children...
I have Coen cousins on LI - I'm guessing that you live in NY - and both are in Suffolk County -(one in Port Jefferson and the other close by) - Jimmy Coen and John Coen - another brother, Andrew, used to live in western NJ but I'n not sure where he is now.
Thanks for everything

I thought I would do a search on the Kyne, Coyne and Coen name. Found the names are interchangeable--and are variants.
This helps--because I know Bartly Quinn was married to Margaret Kyne (sometimes Coen or Coyne on various records-depends on who was recording the name). They were my grgrgrandparents. Their daughter Catherine was my grgrandmother--she married Martin Carr and lived in Tully Village Newbridge. Catherine and Martin were the parents of Mary Mockler's mother. So if I am correct Margaret Kyne Quinn was your grgraunt (if I have the generations correct.). Crowe Village is somewhere between Newbridge and Ballygar. Tom Quinn use to live there and I met him at St. Patrick's Church (Newbridge.)
The website provides some information on the name.

Yes it is the same Mary Mockler- she had 13 children--Peter and Patrick are priest in the Biloxi MS diocese. Mary lived across the way from her brother Mick Conway--he too had 13 children and one of these Conways--Thomas is also a priest in Biloxi.
If it is Mary's mother that the connection is from we have a match. I believe the Coen's would be related to the Quinn's.
This got started because I noted two of my great aunts (who would be Mary Mockler's aunts on her mother's side--the Carr's (who are related to the Quinn's and Coen's) immigrated to NYC and on the manifest it states the sisters Mary and Norah were to go to a cousin Ellen Cone (which I believe is Coen or some form of the name) of Linden Street Baltimore Md. From memory their arrival was somewhere around 1905--I'll check my records. The never made it to Baltimore--remained in NYC and brought out a few more sisters and brothers.
I have been confused by the various names I have seen for Coen--sometimes Coyne and other times Kyne. It is quite confusing. But it sounds as though we match.
Let me know of any other names--maybe it will be able to confirm
Thanks and best wishes
Kevin

Hi
We may have a match...I am related to Mary Mockler through the Coen's. Is this the same Mary who has lovely roses right across the street from her house...where she raised about a million kids...2 of whom are priests in the US?
I have Coen cousins on LI where I was raised..

Sorry I reread your reply--you mentioned Mary Mockler's mother was a cousin to your grandmother--that makes my grandfather a cousin to your grandmother. Several of Mary Mockler's mother's family came to NYC--Margaret (married Strauss), Norah (married Campbell), Nellie ( married Clarke), Mary (married McShane), Patrick (m?), Thomas (married?) and my grandfather Michae (married Delia Ruane from Ballagh Menlough Galway).
Take care and best wishes

Mary Mockler of Windfield (I believe--across the road from her late brother Mick Conway) is a first cousin to my father. He mother Kate Carr Conway was an aunt to my father--she was the sister of my grandfather Michael Carr.
I was wondering are you related to Mary on her mother's side? It seems the Coen has had several spellings. I note Mary's grandmother was Catherine Quinn whose mother was a Kyne (or one of the different spellings I have come across including Coen and Coyne--which makes it difficult to track through) The Quinn's are still in the area I believe Crowe Village.
Does any of this seem familiar.
Thanks
Kevin

Hi
My grandmother was Bridget Coen from Ballygar (actually Cappagh). She emigrated to NYC around 1902 with her sister Maggie. Neither made it out of NY. Their father was Martin Coen and their mother was Julia McLaughlin from Moycullen.
Their parish records are all in Newbridge... Their is also a woman living in Newbridge named mary Mockler whose mother was my grandmother's cousin and she knows family stuff. i also have heard about the Kyne/ Coyne thing.
