Hello Dave
Actually my great grandfather was Joseph, William B's brother. I was on some of the same track as you and came to some of the same conclustion - i.e. we never seemed to haver had much money. Job Coe married Johanna Donovan from Cork, Ireland. He was an agricultural labourer who became a carter and the children were all born in Barkingside. Joseph was also a bit of a no hoper. He was in turn a barman, grocer, labourer, lamplighter and window cleaner! He died of pneumonia - given the last job it was probably cause and effect.
Thank you for the effort on my behalf, I appreciate it, I'm sorry we are not related.
Being in New Zealand it takes a while if I write off anywhere was information.
Regards
Glenda West in New Zealand

Hi
Im not sure if this will be of assistance, but I came across records for Job Coe when trying to trace my own family tree. (My great grandfather is William Coe born Wenden Ambo , Essex in 1865(6) ) .
Your Great Grandfather William B Coe had a similar birth date in Essex and as these censuses are a little vague I checked, William B's tree back to Job. I was a little confused to find Job Coe at the age of 2 living in a house in the Barking area with a family of a different name. I suppose there are many reasons this could happen, family illness etc. Anyway I checked Job Coe out and found another older Job Coe living not far away. He is Job Coe born 1801 living in Dagenham Essex with his wife Sarah born 1811. Later they actually lived at Coe Cottage. Job is such an unusual name it would seem a very good chance that they are related, but I cant be sure as I have only just started looking.
Im pretty sure now that my great grandfather was a different William, though he perhaps had an even more troubled past than young Job. I find him in the 1871 census living in the Saffron Walden Workhouse with his mother and sister. His mother, Mary, is described as unmarried and an 'imbecile'. Tracing her a little further back we find her as a housekeeper with a certain Nathaniel Savill in Wenden Ambo. It would appear that William may well be Mr Savill's 'unoffical' son. When later Nathaniel marries a nice school teacher , poor old Mary is shipped off with young William to the workhouse.
And there I was hoping to find out that I was an heir to an unclaimed fortune, but in truth most of the Coe family Ive ever met, live rather more 'colourful' lives , than thrifty.
Best of luck with your search
Dave Coe, Liverpool, UK

Outstanding . . . I know Charles lives in Bullhead City, AZ and have contacted him, but want to make plans soon to visit. What I need to do is update the family tree from your side of the family.

My Great Uncle Gordon Payne traced back our family tree several years ago. He found William Robert Coe who married Emma Swadling and had a family of 13 children. William is the son of George Coe (born 11 Jan 1818) who married Harriet Conway. George Coe's wife died in 1874 and they migrated to NZ later in 1874, sailing on the ship "Euterpe" now called "Star of India". This ship is at the San Deigo Maritime Museum, and it still sails today. I have more info about the rest family tree if you want it.

Job Coe was my great great grandfather. I am having a problem finding who his parents were. He is boarding with other people in the 1841 and 1851 census.
He was, I understand an agricultural labourer who later became a carter and moved to London. In 1859 he married Johanna Donovan who came from Cork, Ireland. They married in Stepney. Their children were Joseph (my great grandfather), William B., Agnes, Catherine, Ellen, Frederick and George. All th children were born in Barking, Essex.
Has anyone information about this family please?
