Carl,
Thank you for the great reply! I am so excited to finally find information on this branch of the family.
I am thrilled to find Sylvester Porter's parents name. I wonder what the source is for that entry?
His name was actually Owen Sylvester Porter. And I cannot seem to find him in the 1850 census. Every census, he is in a different state, so it has been hard.
I think Mary probably died between 1860-70. In 1870, Sylvester is remarried. One daughter Mary Artiemesia is livng with him but his two other children, Frances (Fannie) and Charles, show up back in Wood Co. living with other folks. Fannie is living with Caleb and Susan (Coe) Wiseman. This Fannie was my Great Great Grandmother. She married George Hopkins.
Anyway, thank you again for the fantastic info!

Carl, First of all thank you for replying. The information was really helpful.
You mentioned that Artemesia died Apr. 12, 1845, but I see that she had a seven year old daughter, Ann Elizabeth and son John T. die in 1845. Do you know if there is a connection to their deaths like an accident or something of that nature?

Doug,
I was pleased to find your post. Samuel Coe was born in 1808 in Wood County, VA, fourth child of Presley and Delilah (Perry) Coe. I have included below a biography from page 366 of the book "The Coe Families of Maryland and Virginia" (Columbus, OH: 2002), two volumes, 1467 pages. DNA testing indicates that this family descends from Sir John Coe (1340-1415), who was knighted by King Edward III in 1365 for valor at the Battle of San Gallo, Italy, May 1, 1364, as a captain of The White Company.
_______________________
SAMUEL5 COE (Presley4 William3, Richard2, Richard1) was born in 1808 in Wood County, VA. He appears on the same page of the 1840 Wood County census with Delilah Coe and Alexander Charles Coe. He was still living in the county in 1850, at the time boarding with Seth and Tacy Peadro Hamer, his parents-in-law. He was a carpenter. His wife and children were buried at Palestine Cemetery.
He married December 18, 1834, in Wood County, Artemisha Peadro, died April 12, 1845, daughter of John and Tacy (Butcher) Peadro of Randolph County, VA.
Children (born in Wood County, VA):
1. Mary, b. 1837; m. Oct. 20, 1856, in Wood Co., VA, Sylvester Porter, b. 1835 in Allegheny Co., PA, son of Michael and Mary Porter.
2. Ann Elizabeth, b. April 1, 1838; d. April 12, 1845. Burial was at Palestine Cemetery.
3. John T., b. April 27, 1840; d. 1845. Burial was at Palestine Cemetery.
4. Fannie Estella, a schoolteacher, b. Sept. 1, 1843; d. Sept. 17, 1922; m. (1) Sept. 19, 1861, Harry Hinkley, b. in 1837 in ME, son of H. and Serena Hinkley; (2) June 21,
1873, Samuel Benjamin Golden. Children: Carl William, Ann, Lucy, Bessie, Daisy, Garnet.
5. Frances, b. 1844.

Samuel and Artemesia Peadro Coe were my ggggrandparents. I have very little info on Samuel. If I'm not mistaken he was the son of Walter Coe Jr. My notes came from the Wirt county, WVa board in 2005. Walter Coe Jr. (b. abt. 1784 - d. 01-1851) had a brother Samuel Coe (b. abt 1772) Then it looks like this Samuel Coe had a son Samuel Coe b. 1806 in Wood Co. Va. But what I make out on Walter Jr. is that he md. Bathsheba Jett abt. 1803 and there children were William, Lucinda, Samuel,Thomas, Mary Jane,George, John, Edward, Owen, Susan, and Brainerd.
I haven't studied on this side of the family (as you can see) very much. I have been working on the Hill side of the family for a while. I thought I remember seeing some of the Coe's in my file and when I saw your post it reminded me of that. I know this probably doesn't help you, but I will continue looking for more info.
You can e-mail me direct dsummers95(a)triad.rr.com

Hello Carl,
Actually, my husband comes through the first family, Mary Ann Pearce, the
daughter of Widow Elizabeth Pearce (nee Mcguiness), who became the defacto
of Charles COE. We are at this very moment tracing the COE side of the
family. We only found out what happened to my husband gg grandmother
Elizabeth after the death of her first husband Richard Pearce in 1839. This
information only came to light at the beginning of March of this year.
We are taking a trip to Coonamble and Coonabarabran on 9th May for a five
day visit, to see if we can find descendants of Charles Coe and Elizabeth.
Elizabeth was buried in the Old Coonamble Cemetery in 1898, she was 85 years
of age. We hope we can find males descendants and if we do, we will
definitely tell them about the DNA project. It would be great to see where
Charles COE fits in. In 1829 to find a man who was educated, was very
unusual, as 90% of the convicts sent to this country, males and females were
illiterate.
Will keep you informed when we find the rest of the family.
Regards,
Janice

Good morning Carl,
We are interested in a Charles COE, born circa 1803, maybe in London, native
place Camberwell, married with a daughter in 1829. He was a Groom and
Hawker. In 1829 Charles COE was arrest for being a Pick Pocket, it was his
first offence, he could read and write. He was tried at the Essex Quarter
Sessions in Chelmsford on 28th April 1829 and sentenced to transportation
for Life, to the Penal Colony of New South Wales (Australia).
Charles COE'S parents appear to be Charles and Jane COE of Essex. Convict
Charles COE sailed on the convict ship "Catherine Stewart Forbes", arriving
in Sydney Cove on 18th February 1830. He was assigned to Cornelius O'Brien
on his property on the Illawarra on the South Coast of New South Wales.
Charles COE received his Ticket of Leave in 1839 and was allowed to stay in
the district of BATHURST, a city today of the Western Plains of New South
Wales. At this time Cornelius O'Brien also had a property on the Bathurst
Plains, so it can be assumed that Charles COE had been transferred from the
Illawarra Property to Bathurst. However, Charles only held his Ticket of
Leave for three months, when he was arrested and appeared in the Bathurst
Court House, were he was found guilty of forgery and sentenced to 3 years in
chains in the Bathurst Gaol. The sentence was cut by two thirds and he was
released after only a year in 1842. It was not until 1845 when Charles COE,
received his second Ticket of Leave and in 1850 he received his Certificate
of Freedom.
Around 1844 Charles COE, met up with my husband's gg grandmother Widow
Elizabeth Pearce (nee Mcguiness). Elizabeth was the daughter of convict
Elizabeth Macginnis, who arrived in the Colony on board the female convict
ship "Friendship" in January 1818, with her 7 years old son Thomas and 5
year old Elizabeth. It appears that Charles COE and Widow Elizabeth
PEARCE (nee Mcguiness) never married, maybe because Charles had left a wife
behind in England, however over the years they had at least 10 children.
My husband descends from the only surviving child of Elizabeth PEARCE (nee
Mcguiness's) first marriage to Richard Pearce. Richard was the youngest son
of two convicts, John Pearce arrived 1802 on board the Perseus sentenced to
Life and Mary Lees (nee Hughes) arrived on board the William Pitt in 1806,
sentenced to 7 years. It appears that our convict Charles COE, comes from
the Essex COE family and I am hoping you may know something about this
gentleman. There is a description of convict Charles COE:
HE WAS 5'4" TALL DARK RUDDY COMPLEXION, BLACK HAIR, DARK HAZEL EYES, WITH A
LARGE SCAR OR CUT IN THE SHAPE OF A Y ON THE BACK OF HIS HEAD. Maybe he had
been kicked by a horse?
Charles COE died in 1884 on the Chisholm property "Merrilla" just south of
Goulburn on the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales, alone and away from
his de facto wife Elizabeth and his grown and married children, who were now
all living in either Coonamble or Coonabarabran towns in north west of New
South Wales. Charles was 82 years of age (born circa 1803), born England and
54 years in the Colony. He is buried in the Church of England (Anglican)
Section of the Keppilaw Cemetery near Goulburn. In his will be did not
mention Elizabeth or any of his children and left £50 to the gentleman who
owned "Merrilla" William Alexander Chisholm.
Hope that you maybe able to assist and I look forward to hearing from you.
Regards,
Janice
Belrose - Sydney

How very nice to hear from you. I trust you had a pleasant Easter.
As you have seen, Essex is the ancestral home of the Coe family. They have been seated there since at least the twelfth century. Sir John Coe (1340-1415) lived at Gestingthorpe, which sets near the Cambridge and Suffolk County lines.
I have researched the family there pre-1650 and of course the family here in America from 1607, with the arrival that year of Thomas Coe, Gentleman, at Jamestown, Virginia. Thomas Coe was of the Essex family, born at Groton, Suffolk, not far from Gestingthorpe. US President George Bush traces his paternal ancestors to Messing, Essex. Friends,
I have some exciting news to report. First, Londoner Keith William Coe's DNA results posted this past week. Interestingly, he has two matches in the Coe Family DNA Project. They are Romie Coe of Bluefield, West Virginia, and Marvin Howard Coe of Gastonia, North Carolina, both in the US. They descend from Francis Peter Coe, who was born about 1740 and who first begins to appear on record in the 1780s in Loudoun County, Virginia.
Keith is our only link to England for this family. If we can learn his ancestry or we can help unravel it, it will help us learn the ancestors of this very large American Coe family. Descendants of Francis Peter Coe comprise one of the largest Coe families in the US. There are thousands of descendants.
Secondly, results have also posted for Grahame Ronald Coe of Gestingthorpe, Essex. Indications are that his family is likely connected to Sir John Coe (1340-1415) who lived at Gestingthorpe and who was knighted by King Edward III in 1365. Grahame traces his ancestry to John Coe who lived at Stradishall, Suffolk, in the mid-1600s. Stradishall is ten miles north of Gestingthorpe.
James Clay Coe recently joined the project. He descends from William Coe (1727-1792) of Charles County, Maryland, and Fairfax County, Virginia. He is the first member of that family to join. It will be interesting to learn results. William Coe was a son of Richard Coe Jr. of Charles County.
We are in need of project participants from descendants of the Coe family of Baltimore, Maryland, and William Coe of Frederick County, Virginia. Coes from around the world are encouraged to participate. As you can see from the report above, we have an opportunity to document and connect Coe families from across the globe.
