Good afternoon,
I have joined the COE list hoping the SKS can shed some more light on this
family, either in England or in Australia.
The COE story begins in England, Charles COE was born circa 1803-6? in
Walthamstow Essex, England (though on one of his daughter's birth
certificate he claimed he was born in London) to Charles and Jane COE. Baby
Charles was Baptised on 2nd March 1806 in Walthamstow, Essex, England
At the age of 27 Charles COE, was arrested for pick pocketing and tried on
28th April 1829 at the Essex Quarter Sessions, found guilty and sentenced to
transportation to the Colony of New South Wales (Australia) for Life. His
profession was given and a Groom and an Hawker. His description was that he
was 5'4" tall, with a dark ruddy complexion, black hair, hazel eyes, with a
large cut or scar and the numbers 828 tattooed on the back of his head.
He sailed on the convict ship "Katherine Steward Forbes", which sailed from
Spithead, Portsmouth with 200 male convicts on board on the 14th October
1829, arrived in Sydney Cove on 18th February 1830. The Master of the ship
was Thomas Canney and the Surgeon was Pat McTernan. The voyage took a 127
days and only one convict died on the voyage.
Upon his arrival he was assigned to Cornelius O'Brien on one of his
properties at Ulladulla. In 1839 he was in Bathurst a western town in
country New South Wales (O'Brien also had a property on the Bathurst
Plains), when he received his Ticket of Leave, which allowed him to move
around and work for himself only in the Bathurst area. However, just three
months after he received his Ticket of Leave, he was arrested for forgery
and sentenced in Irons to Bathurst Goal for three years. His sentence was
reduced to 1 year and in 1842, he must have received permission to travel to
Sydney, as he married 29 year old Widow Elizabeth Pearce (nee McGuiness) the
owner of "The Horse and Carriage Inn", situated in Castlereagh Street in Old
Sydney town, (however, the marriage cannot be found on the NSW BDM Website.
Elizabeth's husband Richard Pearce had died in 1839 leaving her with four
children, in 1841 her 2 years and nine month son Robert also died. After
she married Charles COE, she left her two eldest children Elizabeth and
Richard with thier grandparents, ex convicts John and Mary Pearce (Hughes
nee Lees) in Sydney and she started to move around the country side with her
second husband Charles COE and her youngest surviving daughter from her
first marriage Mary Ann Pearce, while Charles COE worked as a labourer on
farms. Many children were born to the couple over the years, some dying
very young, however at least eight lived to adulthood and married. Two
children were born in Binda on the Southern Tablelands and one in Berrima on
the Southern Highlands.
On 15th August 1885 Charles COE, died at "Merrila" a property owned by the
Chisholm family just outside of Goulburn, he was 82 years old. If Elizabeth
was with him, it is unknown, however this property was near to where
Elizabeth's daughter from her first marriage was living with her family,
Mary Ann Cramp (nee Pearce) at "Chain of Ponds" in Binda on the Southern
Tablelands. Mary Ann had married George Cook Cramp in 1861 at Goulburn, and
at the time of her step-father's death she had had 10 children, the youngest
Sarah Maria Cramp was just one year old (my husband's grandmother).
Elizabeth COE (Pearce nee Mcguiness) was 85 years of age in 1898, when she
died at Coonamble at the home of her daughter from her second marriage, Jane
Evans (nee Coe), it appears that all her children had settled around the
Coonamble District of New South Wales.
The descendants of the COE family, now live in Binnaway, Coonamble, Dubbo,
Coonabarabran, also in the suburbs of Sydney and even in the state of
Queensland and other places still to discover, families who married into the
family are the EVANS, PARKER, ROOK, SAISALL, DARGIN, COVENTRY, BOWMAN
families. The families that married into Thomas Mcguiness (Elizabeth COE'S
brother) and Sarah McGUINESS'S (nee Blackman) family were, O'HARA, FORD,
FOGG, MCDONALD, CLEMENTS, BALGOWAN, SCHELP and BRANSON.
If any one can contribute any information regarding this branch of the COE
family, it would be very much appreciated.
Thank you
Regards,
Janice

Thank you for responding. I will indeed check out your book to see if it's in my local library. I'm sure your books cost more than I can afford right now to purchase. I am 45 years old and planning to get married in June for the first time. And with a man who's family is from the southern bottom of West Virginia and the southwestern part of Virginia, too...as is my Dad. And we both live in Missouri now (me, because my Mother's family lives here and his dad relocted here from the army). During my research on his family and mine, I've been wondering if I'll come across where our families connect since they are all from the same area but so far haven't found a connection.
Thank you again for your help. I couldn't believe though that we have our own branch of Coe's here in the US and not related with any of the others. I thought with such an odd name as Coe, that we'd all be related somehow. Funny how these things run but I've been having a blast doing this research.
Well, thanks again. I've subscribed to your blogs and look forward to see any new developements.
Anita Coe

Anita,
Welcome aboard! It is nice to have another Coe interested in the history and legacy of this unique American family. As Mary Lou noted, you have accomplished much in a very short time.
You mentioned Richard Coe as the father of Francis Peter Coe. At one time this seemed possible in that he lived in the same area of Loudoun County, VA, as did Richard Coe descendants. Additionally, the Ballinger family that accompanied the Coes to Pittsylvania County, VA, about 1790 were from across the Potomac in Maryland where the Richard Coe family lived. Francis was a common given name on the Western Shore of Maryland. But, thanks to modern DNA testing, Richard Coe has been definitively ruled out as an ancestor of Francis Peter Coe. Two members of your family have had their DNA tested. There is no relationship to Richard Coe. In fact, your DNA is not closely associated with any other Coe family in the US. The closest match is a descendant of Matthew Coe (1620-1670) of England and Portsmouth, NH. Please see my Blog of details: http://blog.myspace.com/carlrcoe
Secondly, the family name of Francis Peter Coe's wife is unknown. I saw a message on the internet about ten years ago that stated "why not try Pearson as her name." Unfortunately, that has been passed around and is now being entered into family history files as fact. It is not.
The above was based on the fact that Francis Peter Coe named a son Pearson Coe. He also had a son Jacob Coe and a son William Coe. With the above logic, Nancy Coe's maiden name could have just as easily been Williams or Jacobs. The fact is there is no record anywhere where her maiden name is noted.
As Mary Lou mentioned, in 2002 the results of my 27 years of Coe research were published in an award winning book titled "The Coe Families of Maryland and Virginia." One of the main chapters is titled "Francis Peter Coe of Virginia." It should tell you most of what you are in need of, plus save you many years of work. I spent much time in the Saltville area doing research.
Two-volume, 1467-page, sets of "The Coe Families of Maryland and Virginia" are available at many libraries and research centers. They are also available for purchase. If you would like to go that route, please let me know and I will send you a brochure. I would also be happy to share with you what I can within the bounds of my hectic schedule.
I have attached a photo of the Coe books below.
I would be delighted to hear from you.
I hope this is helpful.

Sounds like you have gathered a lot of information in a short while. The foremost COE researcher is Carl Robert Coe. You can e-mail him at ccoe2(a)columbus.rr.com
He has written a 2 volume book on the COE family. There is a whole section of it dedicated to the descendants of Francis Peter Coe.

Hi Mary Lou,
Are you kidding? I've already become addicted. My soon-to-be husband has already started telling people he's become widowed already. I dream about this stuff and I've only been working on it for about 3 weeks now.
Yes, I have dates for most of the Coe's I mentioned.
My Father, Thomas Eugene Coe was born on Oct. 19, 1938.
His Father, Thomas Edward Coe was born on Sept. 9, 1916.
William Hal Coe was born on July 31, 1893.
Andrew Jackson Coe was born on August 10, 1874.
Thomas J. Coe was born on June 10, 1853.
William Coe was born in 1828
John L. Coe was born in 1799
William Coe was born about 1775
Francis Peter Coe was born about 1740 and I have no date on Richard Coe. All of these, with the exception of Richard, I have being born in the Virginia/North Carolina area. I've hit a snag with Richard and can't seem to go beyond him. I also have a ggrandmother, Rose Lute Osborn Coe who was married to William Hal Coe. I have her parents listed as David Alec Osborn and Francis Bathsheba Olinger but I can't seem to find anything out on David Osborn. If I had his and his parents info, then I'd have all info up to the 6th generation back from me on all sides.
This has really been fun doing all this and at times, frustrating when I hit a snag...usually I just drop that branch I'm working on and work with another branch. I am also researching my Mother's side (all of hers are from out west) and my future husband's family. So I have lots to go to when I get frustrated with one branch.
Thanks for responding to my post.

Welcome to genealogy! Beware: Many folks become addicted to this hobby within a short time.
Can you associate dates with the births of your Coe folks?

I am new at this geneology research and would appreciate any help in locating information about my Dad's family. He was Thomas Eugene Coe, son of Thomas Edward Coe & Ora Juanita Gilbert Coe, who was son of William Hal Coe and Rose Lute Osborne Coe. William Hal was son of Andrew Jackson Coe and Emma (Fanny) Keesee Coe. Andrew was son of a Thomas J Coe and Martha Davis Coe. All of these people came from the Smyth County, Virginia area. Then I have Thomas J Coe being the son of a William Coe and Elizabeth Baker Coe, both from North Carolina. I then have William being the son of John L Coe and Mary Ann "Polly" McCollum Coe, both from Virginia. I have John L Coe being the son of William Coe and Lavica Barrett Coe, also from Virginia but dying in North Carolina. From there, I have William Coe being born to Francis Peter Coe and Nancy Pearson Coe. I have Francis Peter being born in Loudoun County, Virginia but no further info on Nancy Pearson Coe. I have Francis Peter Coe!
being the son of a Richard Coe but have no other info on him.
If anyone can help me with this, I would greatly appreciate it.

My name is Anita Lynn Coe and I had a ggrandmother named Rose Lute Osborne Coe. She was born in 1896 around Saltville, Virginia. She was married to my ggrandfather, William Hal Coe, also of Saltville, Virginia. I don't know if this is the same one you have a picture of or not.
I have just begun getting into geneology of my family names in the past 3 weeks so I'm very new at this.
If this is along the lines of the Coe family you have, I'd love to hear from you.

My Coe ancestor (my ggggrandmother) is Martha "Patsy" Coe daughter of
Stephen Coe and Betsy Hart. I believe your Nannie Coe is Nancy Elizabeth Coe
daughter of James Wesley Coe who was son of William Newton Coe son of Vincent Coe
who was the brother of my Martha "Patsy" Coe. I have been hoping to find a
male descendant (who carries the Coe name) from the Stephen Coe line willing to
submit to a DNA test. If there is anyone out there please get in touch.
