Thank you so much Carl for your very prompt reply!! I was so interested in what you had to say of your "Coe" research in the U.K. Thank you so much for passing on your experiences to me. My Great Great Great Grandfather Edward Coe not only was a printer but had provisions stores and a bookbinding business as well. They moved from Norfolk to Clare in Suffolk around 1881 -Edward,his wife Elizabeth Hovell- Coe ,their daughter Elizabeth Rebecca, and Rebecca Sendall-Hovell-Gail ( a very busy lady in the marriage stakes )- who was Elizabeth's Mother. Did you go to Clare? I believe it is a very pretty and Historic Town and we intend going there to see if we can locate the Coe's shops on the High street. Thank you so much for the Coe - Photographer info I will follow it up. Lovely to have had this opportunity to talk to you. Margaret in Australia.

Margaret,
Very nice to hear from you. Here is a link to Andrew Coe's Photography School in Norwich: http://www.barrettandcoe.co.uk/
You are about to embark on the expereience of a lifetime. I visited Suffolk and Essex in 2003. Upon arriving in Ipswich, the first thing that caught my eye was Coes Clothing Store: http://www.coes.co.uk/
They have stores in Beccles, Dovercourt, Felixstowe, Lowestoft and Maldon. Perhaps the largest clothing chain in East Anglia, it was founded by current owner Bill Coe's grandfather. I spent some time with Bill at the Ipswich store.
>From Ipswich, I made my way to Gestingthorpe by way of Bury St. Edmunds, Boxford and Groton. As I arrived on foot at St. Mary's Church, I was greeted by local resident Grahame Coe who was mowing the churchyard. Sir John Coe (1340-1415), who was knighted by King Edward III, lived at Gestingthorpe, attended St. Mary's and is buried in the churchyard. Current US President George W. Bush is a descendant of John Coe, as was Sir Winston Churchill.
May your trip be as interesting and as rewarding as mine.

Message Board Post:
Friends,
My humble apologies for a belated update. I have a few things to report.
First, I am extremely pleased to announce the addition of Grahame Coe of Gestingthorpe, Essex, England, to the Coe Family DNA Project. His kit arrived this week in Houston for analysis.
I met Grahame in Gestingthorpe in May 2003. A small village of perhaps a hundred souls, Gestingthorpe is the oldest known home of the Coe family. Sir John Coe (1340-1415), knighted by King Edward III, lived there, attended St. Mary's Church and is buried in the churchyard. The church was built shortly after the Norman invasion of 1066. Church ministers are recorded back to 1325.
While visiting my son who lived just south of London, I spent a few days in Suffolk to explore the geographic origins of the Coe family. By way of Ipswich, Boxford and Groton, I made my way to Gestingthorpe, a few miles west of Sudbury. As I arrived on foot at the village church, a gentleman was mowing the lawn. After looking around for a few minutes, I interrupted his work and introduced myself as a Coe from America researching his roots. Startled, he introduced himself as Grahame Coe. He showed me where his ancestors were buried in the church cemetery. Later we went into the church where John Coe (1495-1533) is buried in the church keep. It was a surreal meeting that I will never forget.
Grahame and I have stayed in contact. Cousin Renee Coe Jones of Glasgow, KY, visited with Grahame while in England in 2005. Smokey Coe and his daughter Lori from Gastonia, NC, also made their way to Gestingthorpe to visit with Grahame a year ago. I spoke with Grahame at Christmas and we made arrangements for him to participate in the project. He traces is ancestry to John Coe who was born in the early 1600s at the small Suffolk village of Stradishall, a few miles from Gestingthorpe.
Also, DNA results have posted for Floyd Coe of Des Moines, IA. His ancestry is known only back to John Plato Coe who was born June 19, 1834, at Covington, KY. Very interestingly, his DNA is just a single marker from project member James Allen Coe of Jonesboro, IN (see the 11-22-06 DNA report for details on James' family).
For information on Floyd's family, please follow this link: http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=carlrcoe&id=I8310
If you have not visited my website lately, please give it a look. I have posted over 100 Coe family photos, some dating to the 1840s: http://www.myspace.com/carlrcoe
For a summary of Coe DNA results posted to-date, please check this link: http://www.familytreedna.com/(mspkrz45gvhtz2e4crngkhvf)/public/Coe Family DNA Project/index.aspx?fixed_columns=off
Thank you again for your interest and participation. If you know of Coes who would like to join the DNA project, please have them use this link: http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=N65083&special=True

Earle Bryant Coe is a bit of a mystery. Born in 1857 in New York, he married Dec. 28, 1881, Mary C. Freeman, born May 5, 1857, in Michigan, daughter of Edward C. and Julia C. (Shaw) Freeman. She died Aug. 15, 1899, in Denver. Earle then lived with his mother-in-law at 1133 Colfax Avenue, Denver.
Earle and Mary C. (Freeman) Coe had three children:
1. Harold Edward Coe, born May 15, 1883, in Denver; insurance broker in New York City.
2. Julia M. Coe, b. Aug. 1886 in Denver.
3. Earle Bryant Coe, Jr., b. Sept. 16, 1888, in Denver; salesman for Standard Oil in Omaha, NE.
I hope this is helpful.

Yes, Upton G. Knight is listed in the 1850 Census under Jacob Knight. I do not have a death certificate or newspaper death notice for Upton Knight, however, I believe Upton died in the early to mid-1880's. Bennetta (Coe) Knight remarried a William Dobbs about the mid-1880's. Ellen (Knight) Swanner died of pneumonia in 1905 (Source: Death Certificate). Also, I believe Jacob Knight died in March 1859 (Source: Baltimore Sun Newspaper).
