Hi Carole,
Wonderful to hear from you. Yes, two John Coe of Stamford, CT, and Rye, NY, descendants have been Y-DNA tested. They are both 100% perfect matches with descendants of Robert Coe, Puritan immigrant of 1634. Richard Elrich Coe, a John Coe descendant and family historian, argued quite convincingly that John and Robert were brothers, sons of Henry and Mary (Vincent) Coe of Suffolk, England. Please see: http://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/pageload.cgi?elrich::coe::338.html

Hi Carl: Just wondering if you have ever found what the relationship between John Coe, born 1622 that setled the Rye area and Robert Coe, the Puritan? I come for that John Coe side, and find he gets mixed up with Robert Coe's son John? Has anyone on that John Coe side entered any DNA?
Thank you and thank you for all of your great work.
CJ
Carl, I have been following with interest your messages about the DNA project. I must thank you profoundly for all of us for your hours of work in this area and your dedication to the project. I am now asking you for one more step. Would it be possible for you to design and post a family chart that shows the various progenitors who have been assigned descendants by the DNA project and those descendants. I have been trying to keep track but am now lost! At my age, confusion sometimes rages and anything that will contribute to the unraveling of that confusion (mixed metaphor?) would certainly be helpful.
Perhaps there is someone else in our group who is adept at such techniques who could do this for all of us.
Thanks. Verdenal (Verdi) H. Johnson, g-granddaughter of Emma Julia Coe, daughter of Aaron Coe

Hello Carl
Congratulations in getting more tie in to the Coe family.
Is there a test for son whose mother and grand mother break into the
male to male direct line?
As soon as we get our finances settled Bill will have the DNA test it
will be good for the Marrs line.
IF we can do two tests at the same time we could do that.
Have a nice day.

Friends,
I have much to report. Since the last update we have three new
members. Additionally, DNA results have posted for two more project
participants.
The new members are Robert Harrison Castle Coe of Concord, TN; Rev.
David Myron Coe of Pentress, WV; and Elmer Douglas Coe of
Indianapolis, IN.
Robert Harrison Castle Coe is a descendant of Jabez Coe of Desborough,
England, Upland, PA, and Lodi, CA. It is always a good idea to test
more than one member from each family branch. We will anxiously await
Robert's results to see if they match those of Jabez Coe descendant
James Arthur Coe, whose results posted a week ago.
Rev. David Myron Coe is a descendant of John Coe (1712-1790) of Kent
County, MD. Another descendant, James Carlton Coe's, results posted
over the weekend. I'll discuss below.
Elmer Douglas Coe is a descendant of Samuel Coe (1793-1865) of North
Carolina and Wayne County, KY. This is very exciting. Samuel Coe's
family has not been connected to other Coes. Evidence suggests that
he is a son of Joshua and Rachel (Paul) Coe of Caswell County, NC.
Joshua Coe may be a member of the Coe family of Baltimore, MD. In
1782 Joshua Coe of Baltimore inventoried his father's estate there.
He then disappears from record. Possibly the same Joshua Coe married
Rachel Paul in Caswell County, NC, Oct. 26, 1784.
Now the results. First, Denzle Bethards' results posted yesterday.
He is one marker off from his distant cousin Blake Bethards whose
results previously posted. No problem. This conclusively proves that
Daniel Coe and Elizabeth Bethard of Somerset County, MD, were the
parents of Daniel Coe Bethard (1736-1795). Members of the Bethards
family of the US are descendants of Timothy Coe (1631-1689).
The next project member's results to post was James Carlton Coe of
Clyde, OH. Jim is a descendant of John Coe (1712-1790) of Kent
County, MD. As previously discussed, Timothy Coe's sons William or
John have been considered the most likely ancestors of this family.
And the results suggest that of all Coes in the project, Jim is most
closely related to descendants of Timothy Coe. There is a two-marker
separation, however, so more results are necessary. We'll have to
wait until David Myron Coe's results post for more clarification.

Message Board Post:
Hi Don,
Very nice to hear from you. Margaret apparently went to Illinois and Bates County, MO, with her brother James Riggs Coe. Below is a little info:
JAMES RIGGS7 COE (Joseph6, Benjamin5, Benjamin4, Joseph3, Benjamin2, Robert1) was born July 8, 1811, in Madison County, KY. As a young man he settled with his mother in Vermilion County, IL. During the Black Hawk War of 1832 he, then age twenty, joined an Edgar County company of militia under Captain Robert Griffin, 1st Regiment, 2nd Brigade, Illinois Mounted Volunteers, and served from June 19 to August 15. They were marched to Fort Dixon on the Rock River to repulse Black Hawk’s Indian attack. On September 16, 1835, James Riggs Coe of Champaign County Illinois patented 40 acres of land in Champaign County, the South East quarter of the North West quarter of section Twenty-seven in township Twenty. He received another 80 acres the same day. He received another 40 acres, November 1, 1839. That same year he moved to Henry County, MO, and later settled in Bates County. He first lived at Lone Jack and then he moved to the Pleasant Gap Community, where he lived until !
driven out by border fighting. It is reported that he spent time in California during the Gold Rush.
He owned two 80-acre tracts of land in Henry County, patented in 1844. They sold in 1847. In 1861, after Order No. 11, the family relocated to Marshall, Saline County, MO.
"James R. Coe . . . reared in Indiana, went to Virginia after he had attained his majority and was there married, subsequent to which time he removed to Illinois and afterward to Missouri, where he prospered in his undertakings as a farmer and stockman. He became one of the substantial representatives of financial interests in his county and his business activity was the secret of his success. In politics he was a strong and influential Democrat, but without desire for political office, preferring to give his undivided attention to his business interests. At the time of the Civil War his sympathies were strongly aroused in behalf of the south, so that the northern sympathizers feared his influence and made it very unpleasant for him in his home locality. Both armies foraged off of his place, taking his stock and personal property, and at last the northern troops burned his dwelling and other farm buildings. He and his family then sought refuge in Saline county, Missouri, whe!
re he remained until after the close of the war, when he sold his old homestead and purchased a farm in Benton county, Missouri, spending his remaining days there. He was then too old to ever fully recuperate his lost possessions, but he nevertheless, by indefatigable industry, won a competence for himself and his family. From early manhood he was a consistent Methodist and his life was always actuated by honorable principles and devotion to whatever he believed to be right. The poor and needy found in him a warm friend and his neighbors appreciated his social nature and kindly spirit. He was six feet in height, of medium weight and possessed a strong and vigorous constitution that enabled him to do much hard work in his earlier manhood." (Paddock, A Twentieth Century History and Biographical Record of North and West Texas, 2:16-19)
By 1870 he was living in Benton County, MO. He bought a 94-acre farm three miles north of Warsaw. He died there, April 16, 1878. He left a will naming his sons James A. and Allen Brown Coe as executors. In the will he left $1 to his daughter Martha Jane Haskins. Burial was in a private cemetery at Warsaw.
He married (1) December 18, 1834, in Champaign County, IL, Elizabeth Stanford, born January 1, 1818, in Wayne County, IN, daughter of Philip Minor and Mary (Boyd) Stanford. She died April 18, 1874, in Benton County, MO. He married (2) April 6, 1876, in Benton County, Matilda J. Huffman.
Here is a list of James Riggs Coe's siblings:
1. WILLIAM S., b. 1800 in Allegheny Co., PA.
2. Elly, m. Dec. 4, 1819, in Mason Co., KY, Robert Silvey. Sarah Coe is listed as her mother on the marriage record. Moses Thomas was bondsman.
3. ELIAS THOMAS, b. 1804 in PA.
4. Margaret, m. Jan. 2, 1827, in Mason Co., KY, William Jeremiah. Moses Thomas was bondsman.
5. Elizabeth, b. Aug. 28, 1807, in PA; m. April 19, 1828, in Warrick Co., IN, Joseph Arnold, b. March 19, 1809, in KY, d. Jan. 20, 1869, in Pike Co., KY, son of James and Nancy (Keith) Arnold. Burial was at Flat Creek Cemetery, Winslow, IN. Children: Allen, b. May 9, 1830; William, b. Nov. 1831; Alfred, b. April 28, 1835; John I., b. Feb. 1839; Columbus, b. 1840; Joseph Perry, Feb. 1842; Elizabeth W., b. May 1852.
6. Mary C., born 1809 in KY; listed in 1830, 1840, 1850, and 1860 censuses; moved to CA.
Please note that Moses Thomas was bondsman for the marriage of both Elly Coe and Margaret Coe and that Sarah Coe is listed as Elly's mother on her marraige records. Sarah Coe went to Vermilion County, IL, with James Riggs Coe. The father, Captain Joseph Coe, a popular riverboat captain on the Ohio River, died young.
I hope this is helpful.

This message is for Carl R. Coe. My 3rd great grandmother was Margaret Coe, who married Wm Jeremiah. I left a message on your new blog, but that was the first time I used MySpace.com so may not have done it right. I was very interested in the information about Margaret's family that appeared in "Ancestry World Tree Project." I would like to correspond with you about them.

I would like to hear from anyone who may be related to Margaret Coe, or has done research on the family. She married Wm Jeremiah and they moved from Kentucky to eastern Illinois where Wm died in 1835. Margaret raised their childen and died in Bates County, Missouri, date unknown. I have info that Margaret's parents names were Joseph and Sarah Coe, but have not proven that yet.
