Coe Family Project Members and Readers,
What a busy weekend! Two more Coe Project members’ DNA results were posted over the weekend. The first was Rex Eugene Coe of Poway, CA. The second was Norman Alan Coe of Amherst, MA. They are 100% perfect DNA matches, confirming that both are descended from Sir John Coe (1340-1415), who was knighted by King Edward III in 1365.
As you will recall from earlier posts, Norman is the son of noted American cartoonist Roland Coe, who was born May 24, 1907, at Havana, IL: http://www.pbase.com/csw62/coe.
Now that we’ve confirmed Norman’s ancestry, we need to help him figure out the name of his immigrant ancestor. All signs point to John Coe of Stamford, CT. If Richard Elrich Coe had lived long enough to publish his book on John Coe we would know the fact of the matter. We have another John Coe descendant in the Project – Todd Wellington Coe of West Bloomfield, MI. Todd is there any record of Norman’s family in the records you have? Here is his line as far as I know it: (Norman Alan, Roland R., Roy, a Coe, b.c. 1840 in New York).
Rex’s results are equally significant. It almost certainly places Andrew Jackson Coe, who was born in 1817 in Georgia, as a son of Isaac Coe of Edgefield County, SC. Rex is a 100% perfect DNA match with Jackie Burnham Coe, who we know is a descendant of Isaac Coe. As previously mentioned, there were only two Coe families in the entire state of Georgia in 1817. All evidence has pointed to Andrew Jackson Coe as a son of Isaac Coe. DNA results pretty much seals the matter.
It is appearing more and more likely that most Coes in North America descend from Sir John Coe. Of the fifteen Coe DNA results posted to-date, eight are confirmed descendants of the notable fourteenth century English knight: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/s/t/a/Miles-E-Staley/GENE11-00...
Have you checked the Coe Family DNA Project Blog and website? You’re in the minority if you have not. As of this writing, over 300 people have visited the sites. Please visit. And check out the photos. All of those currently listed are Timothy Coe (1631-1689) descendants, including Mr. Universe Boyer Coe, Vice Presidential nominee General Levin H. Coe, Oklahoma gubernatorial candidate William Oliver Coe, etc. Boyer Coe is the only person to receive a perfect score at the World Body Building Championships. Who was he competing against? Among others, the now governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger, who Boyer soundly defeated!
Here are the web addresses: http://www.myspace.com/carlrcoe and http://blog.myspace.com/carlrcoe At the first link I have posted a video from Jack Coe’s old 1950s TV show that some of you might find interesting: (Jack G.11, George Henry10, George Washington9, Willis8, Roswell7, Robert6, Jonathan5, Robert4, John3, Robert2, Robert1, b. 1596 Suffolk, England). Just click on videos, then click “view” and press the forward button. The video should automatically play.
We have exposure to hundreds of new Coes around the world through the website and the Blog. Hopefully, it will result in more Coes joining the project: http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=N65083&special=True

Coe Family DNA Project:
Eureka! Our first Francis Peter Coe family DNA results are back. Not unexpectedly, we have discovered an entirely new branch of the Coe family. The closest relative in the group is the Matthew Coe (1620-1670) descendant. Even then there is a two-mutation variation in their DNA, so it is not certain that they descend from the same English ancestors. This is of interest in that descendants of Francis Peter Coe (1740-1820) comprise one of the largest groups of Coes in North America.
Perhaps one of the most famous (or infamous) Coes from this group was Confederate Renegade Milford G. Coe of Bolivar, MS. His brother Thomas Jefferson Coe, who served under Confederate President Jefferson Davis during the Mexican War, became overseer of Davis Brierfield Plantation just south of Vicksburg.
Milford Coe's five-foot, eight-inch, brown-haired brother William W. Coe, who enlisted June 14, 1861, at Fort Smith, AR, with Company F, First Arkansas Mounted Rifles, received the Confederate Medal of Honor for gallantry at the Battle of Murfreesboro. His younger brother Benjamin F. Coe, who enlisted June 19, 1861, in New Orleans, died July 25, 1861, at Culpeper, VA, with "The Franklin Sharpshooters." Altogether, one hundred and four other Coes served in the Confederacy. For a complete history of Milford Coe and his unfortunate demise, please see: http://genforum.genealogy.com/coe/messages/605.html
We also have a new Coe Family DNA Project member. It is John Talbert Coe of Oviedo, FL USA. I first met John about ten years ago at a Coe family reunion in Hartford, AL. A descendant of Andrew Jackson Coe of Columbia, AL, he joins cousins Rex Eugene and William Jackson Coe in the project. Welcome aboard John!
Additionally, we now have a Blog. Yes a Blog. Please check it out. Lots of info from previous Coe Family DNA Project posts. I'll be checking to see how many visit the site so please give it a look: http://blog.myspace.com/79629669

Coe Family DNA Project,
I am very excited as I write this. Our first John Coe (1712-1790) of Maryland descendant has joined the Coe Family DNA Project. Hurrah! The new member is James Carlton Coe of Clyde, OH USA. For many years associated with the Fremont News-Messenger, Jim and his wife Judi are dear friends.
Born about 1712, John Coe first appears on record in the 1730s in Kent County, MD, on the Eastern Shore. Just across the county line lies Kent County, DE, where two of Timothy Coe's sons lived in the early 1700s.
Records of Shrewsbury Church in Kent County reveal the births of three of the John Coe’s children: Job Coe, born Sept. 20, 1736; Joseph Coe, born Aug. 18, 1740; and Esabelle Coe, born Aug. 13, 1742. Three of John Coe's siblings are mentioned in early church records: Jemima Coe, who married Nov. 13, 1740, Robert Mansfield; Job Coe, who married March 2, 1741, Sarah Norris; and Daniel Coe, who married April 24, 1743, Mary Mansfield.
Interestingly, given names used by the Kent County Coe family were the same as those used by descendants of Timothy Coe (1631-1689). Additionally, both families associated with the Roades and Norris families. Timothy Coe's son John Coe married (1) Elizabeth Roades, daughter of Dr. John Roades of Southampton, England; Somerset County, MD; and Sussex County, DE. John Coe's second wife was Elizabeth (Grey) Wiltbank, whose son Cornelius, a prominent figure in the early history of Delaware, married Comfort Roades, daughter of John Roades, Jr., justice of the peace of Sussex County. Timothy Coe's son William married Alice, who after William's death married this same John Roades, Jr. On January 30, 1684, Daniel Norris of Kent County, MD, deeded a 200-acre tract known as "Prickle Pear" to John Roades.
After 1745 the Coe family left Kent County and moved across the Chesapeake Bay to Baltimore and Frederick Counties, MD. An entire chapter of "The Coe Families of Maryland and Virginia" (Columbus, OH: 2002) is dedicated to "The Coes of Kent and Frederick Counties, Maryland."
When J. Gardener Bartlett finished Robert Coe, Puritan in 1911, he stated “It is possible the Coes of Frederick Co., Maryland descend from this line . . . .” (page 83), referring to Timothy Coe's sons John and William. They are indeed the most likely candidates. DNA testing will soon prove (or disprove) the case. It will be exciting to learn if this is another branch of the Timothy Coe family, or a branch of another family identified through the project.
Stayed tuned. The project rolls on. More DNA results are expected soon.

Judi,
Wonderful to hear back from you. Your books were shipped USPS this morning. You should have them in a few days. You will love them! Thank you.
I’m not aware of a general Coe family reunion. There are various branches of the family that have annual get-togethers.
Recent DNA analysis of your family has proven that you descend from Sir John Coe who was born in 1340 and was knighted by King Edward III in 1365 for valor at the Battle of San Gallo, Italy, May 1, 1364. I have attached photos of the exterior and interior of the Church of Saint Mary’s, Gestingthorpe, Essex, England, which Sir John Coe attended. He died at Gestingthorpe in 1415. The gentleman standing beside the church is current Gestingthorpe resident Grahame Coe.
A captain of The White Company, made famous by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (Sherlock Holmes) in his novel of the same name, Sir John Coe established the Hawkwood Chantry at the Church of Saint Peter in Sible Hedingham, Essex, and another at the priory at Castle Hedingham: http://www.hedinghamcastle.co.uk/index.htm
Please let me know if you have questions after the books arrive.

Thanks for the brochure. I've contacted Pay Pal and you should have my order.
Two other things I wish to ask of you:
First, does the Coe Family as a whole have a reunion? If so, what would I need to do to get on a mailing list?
Secondly, do I understand that you are Aunt Goldie's grandson? I was trying to remember for sure and if that is the case does that make us 2nd or 3rd cousins?
I'm looking forward to reading the books and also to the day we may have a chance to meet. My siblings and I have lost contact with all my grandmother's family. Once Aunt Marie's daughter, Eileen died and then my mom died, we lost track of those cousins. Unfortunate. Maybe you have information on Mike and Cathy Parsons in your book. That would be super!

Do you know how or if your Edward Marr came from Scotland or from the
US?
The Marr/s family in the US started out in what is now Virginia.
The Marrs family name has several spellings. Bill's ancestor started
with Mar then Marr.
My husband's Coe family started in Connecticut and gradually moved
south to North Carolina.
