Friends and Family,
The world is a worse place this week. The passing of Chalmers Coe has left a void not easily filled. He was both family and friend. He was within three months the same age as my father James Paul Coe. We shared the same forebears and the same love of family heritage. Many warm conversations and correspondences passed between us over the past 27 years. I will never forget him and the many kindnesses he showed to me. I will forever cherish the photo of his father the Rev. Albert Buckner Coe, DD, that he donated and which appears on page 208 of "The Coe Families of Maryland and Virginia" (Columbus, OH: 2002).
Rev. Chalmers9 Coe (Rev. Albert Buckner8, Rev. Samuel Walker7, John P.6, Rev. John Jr.5, Capt. John4, Daniel3, Timothy2, Timothy1) died Sunday, March 26, 2006, in Columbus, OH. Born December 31, 1922, he was the oldest son of Rev. Albert Buckner Coe and Katharine Chalmers. Minister of the First Congregational Church (UCC) in Columbus from 1960 to 1983, his tenure at First Church was second in length only to that of his most famous predecessor, Washington Gladden. Mr. Coe began his life in the ministry as assistant to the chaplain at Yale University in 1944. He was ordained the following year. Mr. Coe's life's work encompassed church ministry, teaching, writing and volunteer work. After graduating from Yale College in 1942 and from the Yale University Divinity School in 1945, he was called to a succession of Congregational churches: East Hampton, CT; Amherst, MA; Boston, MA; and First Congregational Church in Columbus, OH.
Before moving to Columbus, he held the position of Associate Professor of Practical Theology at Hartford Theological Seminary. He was invited as lecturer in homiletics to a number of distinguished institutions: Yale University Divinity School, the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus (where he was on the faculty for 11 years), Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus and Phillips Graduate Seminary in Enid, Oklahoma. Publications that include his work are "Best Sermons" (volumes 7 & 8; G. Paul Butler) and the 1970 Journal of Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. Mr. Coe served as trustee at Defiance College in Ohio for eight years and Berea College in Kentucky for fifteen.
His volunteer work included vice-chairmanship of the Commission on Worship of the United Church of Christ for seven years. He was board chairman of the New England Student Christian Movement; the Gladden Community House; the Columbus Chapter of the Red Cross; the United Christian Center of the Ohio State University. After retiring in 1983, Mr. Coe held interim pastorates in churches across the country, from Eugene, OR, and St. Helena, CA, to Manhasset and Brooklyn, NY, and Meredith, NH.
Mr. Coe's ministry was focused on the integrity of the worship service, with the preaching of the Gospel at its center. He made pastoral calls each year on all members of his congregation. Social activism was a vital part of his life (he appears in a life-sized photograph, taken with colleagues while marching for fair housing in Columbus, at the Ohio Historical Society); however, he felt that his purpose in the pulpit was to illuminate scripture, not politics. His love of music inspired the building of a nationally renowned Beckerath organ at the Columbus church and propelled him into energetic support of the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra and the Symphony Orchestra of Columbus. His passions also included an appreciation of art, literature, music, and travel.
Preceded in death by wife Pamela Scherer (daughter of Paul E. Scherer, former pastor of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of New York City.) He is survived by his wife, Susan Meyer of Columbus; by his children, Dectora Jeffers, Portola Valley, CA, Cameron Coe, Canaan, NH, Nathanael Coe, Columbus, OH, Alexandra Coe, Washingtonville, NY; by his step-children, Catherine Feibel Kauffman and Joanne Feibel, both of Columbus, OH, and Jacqueline Feibel, Los Angeles, CA; and by nine grandchildren. The family will hold a private service on Saturday, April 1st. The Rev. Robert Russell, pastor emeritus of Northminster Presbyterian Church, Columbus, will officiate. The family will receive visitors following from 1-4 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, 444 East Broad Street, Columbus.
I have attached an article from today's Columbus Dispatch.
Thank You,
Carl Robert Coe

I am descended from William Scott 1765 - 1854 of Pennsylvania. My maternal grandmother's mother was Eliza Fertig Scott, granddaughter of
William Scott, I believe. I have a poem that William wrote upon the death of his mother-in-law, Eunice Jaggar Coe, who died on September 16th 1803.

Coe Family and Friends,
I have exciting news. The Coe Family DNA Project has a new member - Bruce
Slater Coe of Louisville, KY. This is exciting in that Bruce is a
descendant of Thomas Calhoun Coe, goldsmith and carriage maker of New York
City and Cincinnati, OH. Thomas Calhoun Coe's roots have never been
discovered. We'll soon learn if he was a descendant of Robert Coe, founder
of Hempstead, Long Island, or perhaps John Coe, who immigrated to Stamford,
CT, in 1640. In 1659 John Coe and others purchased Manursing Island from
the Indians and founded Rye, NY, across the bay from Long Island. Hempstead
and Rye are now part of metropolitan New York City.
More good news. Todd Wellington Coe's kit has been received at Family Tree
DNA to begin DNA analysis. Good news? He's a descendant of John Coe of
Stamford, CT, and Rye, NY. Additionally, Jackie Burnham Coe's kit has also
been received. This is especially exciting. Jackie is a descendant of
Edward Coe (1730-1790) of Edgefield County, SC (Jackie Burnham6, Ira
Burnham5, Peter Barrington4, Isaac W.3, Isaac2, Edward1). Edward Coe was one
of the early settlers (1755) of the South Carolina backcountry. We'll soon
learn if Edward Coe was related to other early American Coes and possibly
connect him to the family in England.
Harry Laurence Coe's DNA kit was also received at Family Tree DNA. Harry's
is the third Timothy Coe descendant kit to arrive (Harry Laurence11,
Thurmond Lawrence10, Dolly Columbus9, Willis Thomas8, Robert Fletcher7, Rev.
Isaac6, Rev. John Jr.5, Capt. John4, Daniel3, Timothy2, Timothy1). Harry's
great great grandfather Robert Fletcher Coe, who was born June 29, 1829, in
Guilford County, NC, served as a 1st Lieutenant with Company G, 64th
Regiment, North Carolina State Militia, during the American Civil War. If
our theories are correct, Harry and I should have similar DNA.
Over the weekend I added 465 Las Vegas, NV, Coe marriages to the database.
This creates a new record. It replaces Surry County, NC's, 344 Coe
marriages as the most Coe marriages in a single county in the US. Surry
County is still unique in that all of the Coe marriages listed after 1826
(329 of them) are from a single family -- descendants of William and Lavica
(Barrett) Coe who moved to Surry County from Pittsylvania County, VA, in
1805. Surry County holds the largest concentration of Coes of any county in
the US. And all of them are members of the same family. The last time I
checked a Mt. Airy, NC, phone book there were 66 Coe families listed. And
Mt. Airy, as you will recall from Andy Griffith days, is a small town (and
Andy Griffith's hometown) of 8,420 inhabitants. Fans of Andy Griffith and
Mayberry RFD will recall that just south of Mt. Airy is Pilot Mountain (Mt.
Pilot), led for many years by postmaster and mayor Joseph Henry Coe (Joseph
Henry7, Henry Austin6, Solomon F.5, Henry C.4, Thomas Pearson3, William2,
Francis Peter1).
Having worked on the family since 1979 I have amassed an enormous collection
of public records. As of today, I have entered into the database 11,851 Coe
marriages; 10,749 Coe deaths; and 9,814 Coe births. If anyone is curious
and would like me to check a record, I'll be happy to do it.
The Coe Family DNA Project is open to all members of the Coe family
worldwide. It is truly exciting science. The results will be posted on our
website. We'll be able to view them and see who's related and who is not. I
sincerely hope that you will consider joining us (link below). For best
results, we need several participants from each branch of the family. Please
email with any questions you might have.
Thank You,

Always delighted to hear from you. Yes, the $99 Y-DNA test should meet our project goals. If further refinement is needed to determine degree of relationship, it is fairly easy to upgrade without submitting an additional sample.
Part of the purpose of the Coe Family DNA Project is to establish relationships and lines of descent. One of the goals is to establish if and how many early Coe immigrants were of the same family; i.e., were Richard Coe, Matthew Coe, Timothy Coe, and Robert Coe cousins? My guess is that most existing Coe families, both here, in Canada, Australia, Ireland, England, etc., descend from an early East Anglican ancestor. Scientific DNA testing is the only way to prove/disprove this.
There have been scores of Coes who have immigrated to the US from England, dozens from Ireland, a few from Germany (probably name changes), etc. Scientific DNA testing will prove once and for all how many of these families descend from a common ancestor. There are a few branches of the Coe family in the US with unknown origins. Through DNA testing we'll be able to determine from which immigrant ancestors they descend.
Each male carries his father's Y-DNA. Each woman carries her mother's mtDNA. That is how we will obtain our ancestors' DNA. It passes unchanged from one generation to the next. I carry the same Y-DNA that Timothy Coe brought with him from England ten generations ago. Were Matthew Coe and Robert Coe cousins? We know Robert was born at Boxford, Suffolk. There were numerous Coes in that area at the time. DNA testing will prove/disprove if Matthew Coe, Richard Coe, Timothy Coe, Robert Coe, and others, were members of the same family. If you have male Coe cousins who are direct descendants of Matthew Coe, they all carry Matthew Coe's Y-DNA. By testing someone from your family and someone from other Coe families, the case of their relationship will be rather easily and scientifically solved. Unfortunately, you do not have Y-DNA. Only males. You have your mother's mtDNA, which, unfortunately, will not help with the Coe project. You might consider contributing to the General Fund, h!
owever, to assist others with testing costs: http://www.familytreedna.com/(5002trm4ktkuoj45fv2y4bip)/public/Coe%20Fami...
There are other mysteries DNA testing will resolve as well. Depending on the detail of testing, we'll be able to determine how closely individuals are related; slight mutations occur in DNA in a relatively regular fashion.
It is truly exciting science. Mysteries will be solved that have puzzled Coes for generations. Those who do not know their ancestors can learn of them via scientific testing, rather than sometimes unreliable stories passed down by grandma. For instance, a Coe living in California who knows only his or her immediate family will be able to determine if they are descended from Matthew Coe, Robert Coe, Timothy Coe, Richard Coe, or one of the other Coes who immigrated to the US. A Coe in Australia will be able to learn the branch of the English family to which they belong. If we can solicit participants in England, we'll be able to connect with them as well. My hope is to make this a worldwide project.
I hope this helps answer some of your DNA questions. The results will be posted on the website. We'll be able to view them and see who's related and who is not. And we'll be able to group participants by their ancestor's DNA type.
I hope this is helpful.
