My Coe family started with Hannah Coe who married Edward Marr, David Marr
Jr, my great, great. great grandfather's son. He was born in Canada but later
moved to Iowa. I don't have the dates off hand.
Let me know if there is a match somewhere.

Douglas Evans Coe – “Most Important Man on the Planet”
Some have asked about Washington, DC’s, Doug Coe and his relationship to the Coe family. “The Portland Phoenix” recently (May 9, 2003) declared “Doug Coe is one of the most important people on the planet.” He is certainly one of the most influential.
His organization known as "The Fellowship" or "The Family" is said to have ties with high-powered politicians like Attorney General John Ashcroft, Vice President Dick Cheney, President George W. Bush, multiple members of congress, and prominent business leaders. Some Family members have stated they would love to have Osama bin Laden as a guest speaker because of the covenant he has with his followers.
Credited with Charles Colson's conversion to Christianity, Doug Coe has led the National Prayer Breakfast since 1969. At the 1990 National Prayer Breakfast, President George H.W. Bush praised Doug Coe for what he described as “quiet diplomacy” and as an “ambassador of faith.” Coe has visited nearly every world capital, often with congressmen at his side, making friends and inviting them back to the Family's unofficial C Street headquarters, a mansion the Family bought in 1978 with $1.5 million in donations. Former president Eisenhower, Doug Coe claims, once pledged secret operatives to aid the Family's operations. Al Gore refers to Doug Coe as his personal hero. Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton writes in her autobiography that "Douglas Coe is a genuinely loving spiritual mentor . . . Doug Coe became a source of strength and friendship.” Doug Coe and Hillary Clinton attended Mother Theresa's funeral together in Calcutta in 1997. His son!
David Coe, who went to school here at Ohio Northern University and the Family’s heir apparent, refers to the Mafia and Hitler as role models in the acquisition of power.
Unsettlingly controversial, there's an interesting expose on him and the Family titled "Jesus Plus Nothing" in "Harper's Magazine" (March 2003): http://www.harpers.org/JesusPlusNothing.html
Douglas Evans Coe was born October 20, 1928, in Medford, Jackson County, OR, son of Milton Evans and Loda Helene (Davis) Coe. His parents were married December 26, 1923, at Yamhill, OR. His father was a public schoolteacher. His grandfather, Rev. Curtis Pearre Coe, was a Baptist minister and missionary. He, President George W. Bush, Country Music legend David Allan Coe, Spokane's South Hill Rapist Kevin Coe, and 1950s television evangelist Rev. Jack Coe are all of the same family. His line of descent is (Douglas Evans11, Milton Evans10, Rev. Curtis Pearre9, Joel Horton8, Curtis7, Joel6, Joseph5, Joseph4, John3, Robert2, Robert1).
Yes, interestingly, and to the other extreme, Doug Coe is a cousin of Country Music legend David Allan Coe. Born September 6, 1939, in Akron, OH, son of Donald Mahan and Dorothy Ruth (Wilson) Coe, David spent much of his young adult life in prison in Marion, OH, just a few miles from here. His father, who was born November 15, 1914, in Akron, died August 10, 1986, in Richmond, IN, while on the road with David. His grandfather, Donald Mahan Coe Sr., who was born September 25, 1889, at Charlestown, OH, and died December 1, 1975, in Pinellas County, FL, was the oldest son of Frank Emory and Catherine E. (Mahan) Coe of Mansfield and Marion, OH.
David’s hits include “Take This Job and Shove It”, “The Perfect Country Song”, “If That Ain’t Country”, “Willie, Waylon and Me”, “The Ride”, etc. His line of descent is (David Allan12, Donald Mahan Jr.11, Donald Mahan10, Frank Emory9, Emory John8, Claudius Lucius7, David6, Samuel5, Ephraim4, John3, Robert2, Robert1).
I would be happy to answer any questions you might have.
Thank You,
Carl Robert Coe

Always delighted to hear from you. Yes, the $99 Y-DNA test should meet our project goals. If further refinement is needed to determine degree of relationship, it is fairly easy to upgrade without submitting an additional sample.
Part of the purpose of the Coe Family DNA Project is to establish relationships and lines of descent. One of the goals is to establish if and how many early Coe immigrants were of the same family; i.e., were Richard Coe, Matthew Coe, Timothy Coe, and Robert Coe cousins? My guess is that most existing Coe families, both here, in Canada, Australia, Ireland, England, etc., descend from an early East Anglican ancestor. Scientific DNA testing is the only way to prove/disprove this.
There have been scores of Coes who have immigrated to the US from England, dozens from Ireland, a few from Germany (probably name changes), etc. Scientific DNA testing will prove once and for all how many of these families descend from a common ancestor. There are a few branches of the Coe family in the US with unknown origins. Through DNA testing we'll be able to determine from which immigrant ancestors they descend.
Each male carries his father's Y-DNA. Each woman carries her mother's mtDNA. That is how we will obtain our ancestors' DNA. It passes unchanged from one generation to the next. I carry the same Y-DNA that Timothy Coe brought with him from England ten generations ago. Were Matthew Coe and Robert Coe cousins? We know Robert was born at Boxford, Suffolk. There were numerous Coes in that area at the time. DNA testing will prove/disprove if Matthew Coe, Richard Coe, Timothy Coe, Robert Coe, and others, were members of the same family. If you have male Coe cousins who are direct descendants of Matthew Coe, they all carry Matthew Coe's Y-DNA. By testing someone from your family and someone from other Coe families, the case of their relationship will be rather easily and scientifically solved. Unfortunately, you do not have Y-DNA. Only males. You have your mother's mtDNA, which, unfortunately, will not help with the Coe project. You might consider contributing to the General Fund, h!
owever, to assist others with testing costs: http://www.familytreedna.com/(5002trm4ktkuoj45fv2y4bip)/public/Coe%20Fami...
There are other mysteries DNA testing will resolve as well. Depending on the detail of testing, we'll be able to determine how closely individuals are related; slight mutations occur in DNA in a relatively regular fashion.
It is truly exciting science. Mysteries will be solved that have puzzled Coes for generations. Those who do not know their ancestors can learn of them via scientific testing, rather than sometimes unreliable stories passed down by grandma. For instance, a Coe living in California who knows only his or her immediate family will be able to determine if they are descended from Matthew Coe, Robert Coe, Timothy Coe, Richard Coe, or one of the other Coes who immigrated to the US. A Coe in Australia will be able to learn the branch of the English family to which they belong. If we can solicit participants in England, we'll be able to connect with them as well. My hope is to make this a worldwide project.
I hope this helps answer some of your DNA questions. The results will be posted on the website. We'll be able to view them and see who's related and who is not. And we'll be able to group participants by their ancestor's DNA type.
I hope this is helpful.

SWANNER - On May 23, 1905, at her residence No. 1400 fourth street, Highlandtown, ELLEN G., beloved wife of William F. Swanner and beloved daughter of Bernetta Doe and the late Upton Knight. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral from the above residence on Thursday at 10 A.M. Interment in War Chapel Cemetery, Greenwood, Baltimore county, at 1 P.M.

[Note: Benetta Dobbs' first (i.e., Bernetta) last (i.e., Doe) names were misspelled in this obituary.
** Note: "War" is probably a misspelling of "Waugh" (i.e., Waugh Chapel Cemetery)]
are you sying that only those wih the coe last name are invited? some of us
that do not have this last name have as much dna as any coe. not sure i am
understanding this. i lost the coe surname 4 generations back but i trace
my coe line to about 1350 prior to the 4 generations. evidently i don't
undersstand dna at all. for genealogy i consider myself a direct descendant
of every surname i have. is this wrong?

Looking for more information on the family of John Coe (1757 - 1846) and
Lois Ann Johnson (1762 - 1851). Already have a great deal on this family
but would appreciate anymore that's available on their daughters Matilda
Coe (Sprague) (1796 - 1886) and Hadazsah (Esther) Coe (Moore) (1786 -
1882) and their son Noble Coe (Mary Mess Hall) (1782 - abt 1850).
I would also appreciate any info on how and where to search Holland Land
Company records (1800 - 1840).

done, and what is the approx. cost.

Shirley,
My apologies. The previous message accidentally posted while I was still typing. The photos are attached below.
Not only does "The Coe Families of Maryland and Virginia" (Columbus, OH: 2002) contain information on your family, it is about your family. Are you descended from Fanny Coe who married Archibald Thomas Poindexter?
I have attached below three photos. The first is a photo of the plantation house John Coe built in Cumberland in 1815. The second is a photo from the Cumberland County Coe reunion, held the first Saturday in July each year. I am the tall man in the blue shirt (back row) standing directly under the fire alarm. The third is another photo from the Coe reunion. In the photo, left to right, are Ivan Bennett Coe (farmer), Carl Robert Coe, Ray Dowell Coe (president of Raycoe Industries) and Jerry Robert Coe (president of American Wood Products).
I would be delighted to hear back from you.
Thank You,
