Commander James Wiggins Coe of Richmond Indiana and the United States Navy, s/n 0-063137, was declared dead January 8, 1946, after being missing in action for a considerable length of time. He served on the USS Cisco (SS-290) which was sunk in the Sulu Sea west of Mindanao in the Philippines. His name is honored on the "Tablets of the Missing" at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines. He was awarded the Navy Cross and Purple Heart.
Our goal is to find the families of James Wiggins Coe and give them photos of his name as it appears on the "Tablets" at the memorial.
These references were found on the Indiana State Library website; World War II database. Unfortunately we do not hve access to those microfilms since we reside in the Philippines. We would appreciate any help we could get in obtaining the information leading to finding the family of James Wiggins Coe.

My Coe line came from Gt Waltham and then Felstead. Having lived near Finchingfield I know there is another line who my aunt always says was not related. When my eldest son was born the clinic nurse at Gt Bardfield was called Concie Coe (not sure how it was spelt though) but I expect it was an abbreviation for Constance.
My F-in-L was Robert Hitching COE and his father was Robert Fuller COE. They both had the maiden names of their mothers as second names.

Thanks for the information on Uncle Stewart's family. Steven died young; any idea why?
As for Raymond... Samuel did not feel he could raise an infant after having just lost his wife so, Leota took him. I don't know why Sam didn't take him back after he remarried. The "O" on the census is for Oliver; many in the family called him Oliver because of his mother Olive. Throughout Ray's life, he varied his name. There is no middle name on his birth certificate (the original is dated 1913); sometimes he used the middle name Oliver; sometimes the middle name Butler out of respect for Leota - sometimes he used Butler as his last name. Occasionally he used Oliver as his first name and Butler as his last name. From what I've heard he may have even used other names at times. You can see why I am having so much trouble finding out information about his first wife and their daughter - I don't know what name he was using when he was married or where they lived and only know that they were married in the 1930's for possibly less than a year, with either a divorce or abandonme!

Descendants of William and Mary Coe? Know info so I can fill in the holes of my family tree???
William Lawson Coe and wife Mary came from England in 1845. They spent time in Indiana, Michigan, before finally settling in Woodbury county, Iowa, where they died. William Lawson Coe died October 16, 1891and Mary Coe died October 21, 1878. Their descendants, as far as I know, are pretty much spread out all over the place.
If anyone is interested, I have tenative information on this couple's parents.

Misty,
Philip Stewart Coe’s wife Hazel M. Coe was born January 21, 1915, and died March 14, 1997, in Portland, OR. An obituary appears in The Oregonian, March 16, 1997. Their son Steven P. Coe was born May 18, 1954, in Portland and died February 23, 2001. An obituary appears in The Oregonian, March 16, 2001. Philip Stewart Coe’s obituary appears in The Oregonian, July 16, 1995.

Additionally, Raymond Coe was raised in Holt County, NE, by his aunt and uncle, Wilbur Leroy and Leota L. (Coe) Butler. I believe he was taken there when his mother Olive Gurney died or when his father Samuel Ulysses Coe remarried. He may have taken his middle name from the Butler family. He appears as Raymond O. Coe in the 1920 census. See attached. It is possible of course that his name was miswritten in the census. That was/is a common occurrence.
I hope this is helpful.

Thanks so much Carl! Never knew that Uncle Stewart's first name was Philip. I had never met him; only heard of him through family. I know his father was Raymond's father, but his mother (Flora) was not Raymond's (Olive). Do you have any info on Stewart's wife, Hazel, or his children, Steven and Cathleen?

I found an old photo in an antique store in Outagamie county, WI and am looking for family who may want it. The photo is pretty large in a thick paper folder and is of a young adult girl (maybe a college photo) that is labeled "Nancy Coe" taken by Moffet of Chicago, IL sometime after 1910. If you are interested in having this photo or a download of it please contact me at bulblvr(a)aol.com. Thank you.
