Dale,
I was delighted to see your request for information on the family of Joshua Humphrey Coe of Lawrence, KS. I have posted below information from page 459 of the book “The Coe Families of Maryland and Virginia” (Columbus, OH, 2002). The book won the Maryland Historical Society Parker Prize for the best published work on Maryland family history. It is stocked at some libraries and is still available for purchase.
114. JOSHUA HUMPHREY7 COE (John William6 (48), Samuel5, Elijah4, John3, Richard2, Richard1) was born December 12, 1852, at Dunlapsville, IN. He was named for his maternal grandfather Joshua Humphrey. A graduate of State Normal School, Terre Haute, IN, in 1878 he and his brother James moved to Dodge City, KS, during the hey-day of the cow town. The Coe brothers saw it at its wildest. Joshua later moved to McPherson, where he taught school at Good Hope and other county schools. He and his brother James were joint owners of a candy business in McPherson known as the “Coe Confectionery.” In 1896 he moved to Emporia and in 1906 to 127 E 17th Street, Lawrence, KS, where he worked for Bartelds Seed Store. A member of the Odd Fellows Lodge, his hobbies included inventing, bicycling, alfalfa raising, and collecting free silver. He played both the violin and accordion. He died February 17, 1912. Burial was at Canton, KS.
He married December 1, 1881, at McPherson, KS, Clara Severtson, born March 10, 1862, at Black Jack, KS, died March 6, 1941, daughter of Severt and Ingeborg Karrine (Hansdatter) Severtson, emigrants to Galva, KS, from Norway in 1849. Baptist minister William D. Shields performed the ceremony. Burial was at Canton, KS.
Children:
216. i. JOHN EDWIN, b. Oct. 15, 1882, at Galva, KS.
217. ii. CLYDE GROVER, b. Sept. 25, 1884, at McPherson, KS.
iii. Jessie May, b. March 12, 1887, at McPherson, KS; attended the College of Emporia, Emporia, KS. She later attended the University of Kansas (AB and AM) and the University of Chicago, where she did graduate work in Latin for a PhD. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, KU Greek Symposium, KU Alumni Association, Kansas State Foreign Language Association, and Kansas State Modern Language Association. She taught in high schools at Savenburg, Natoma, Plainsville, and Rosedale (1920-36), KS. Miss Coe never married and spent her later years working with her brother John Edwin compiling a history of the descendants of Richard Coe of Charles County, MD. She lived at 127 E 17th Street, Lawrence, KS.
I hope this is helpful.

Hi there! Glad to meet you!--- Albert G.H. Stewart was my great great grandfather. He lived in his old age in Kansas with his son, Elijah C. Stewart, and died on his farm. Elijah was my great grandfather. So, Albert is your direct line, this is great. Your husband must be related to one of Elijah's brothers-- which one? You know Albert was in the civil war, and incarcerated in Andersenville Prison. He fought for the North, and went to Missouri fron Kentucky after the war to escape persecution from his neighbors. My mother is still living, and she remembers Albert, as does my aunt. We have photos of him.-- Would love to exchange info.--- Karen ( mother is a Stewart).

My husband is directly descended from William Boone Stewart through James B and then from Albert Gallatin Hall Stewart. Albert is the twins (Robert and Nathan) brother. I am interested in what information you have collected. There is so much incorrect information out there and I have just started to do my husband's family tree. My son is the last Stewart in our line and I want to find more ancestor information for him to carry on with. I hope you can help me. Talk to you soon.
