Vickie,
I was delighted to see your request for information on Samuel Winfield Coe and Nannie Bell Owens. I have posted below material from page 734 of the book "The Coe Families of Maryland and Virginia." For additional information, please see http://peggysue5.homestead.com/Coe.html
Samuel4 Coe (Jacob3, Pearson2, Francis Peter1) was born in 1862 in Kentucky. Although on his marriage license he stated that his father was born in Wayne County, KY, it is possible that Samuel Winfield Coe, born February 1862 in Kentucky, was one and the same with this Samuel Coe. A farmer, he first appears on record in Wayne County in 1886, and is listed there in the 1900 through 1920 censuses. He died in 1922 and was buried at the Coe family cemetery at Naomi, KY.
He married December 30, 1886, in Wayne County, KY, Nannie Bell Owens, born 1868 in Wayne County, died January 26, 1936, daughter of James and Elizabeth Owens.
Children (b. in Wayne County, KY):
i. Fred M., b. Nov. 1889.
ii. Charles E., b. March 1892.
iii. Elizabeth L., b. Dec. 1894.
iv. Effie M., b. Aug. 1896.
v. William Lloyd, b. June 1898.
vi. Jonathan, b. March 30, 1904.
vii. Thelma M., b. 1909.
Samuel Winfield Coe and Nannie Bell Owens' marriage license is on file at the courthouse in Monticello, KY -- Wayne County, KY, Marriages, 85-87:186.
Although I have listed Samuel's father above as Jacob Coe, and Jacob Coe did indeed have a son Samuel born in 1862 in Kentucky, Samuel Winfield Coe may have been a grandson of Samuel and Elvira (Davis) Coe of Wayne County, KY. Samuel and Elvira Coe's grandson Arthur Marcum is mentioned on the above marriage license.
I hope this is helpful.

I'm looking for information on Lucy Parker (ancestors and descendants of) who was married to George Coe. Lucy was born in the late 1800's to early 1900's probably in Hebron, Nebraska and later moved to central Illinois in the Springfield area. I don't know much about her husband George Coe, except that he was probably from central Illinois (possibly Sangamon County). If anyone has any information on these two, please let me know.

Hi Vivian,
I received your letter today. I will do my best to answer it.
Embley Coe was born March 30, 1763, in Charles County, MD, daughter of William and Jane (Milstead) Coe. She died Sept. 11, 1838, in Wood County, VA. She married Aug. 2, 1782, Francis Langfitt, born Dec. 30, 1760, died Dec. 16, 1847, son of Philip and Lettice (Smith) Langfitt.
Embley's mother Jane Milstead was born in 1731 in Charles County, MD, died April 14, 1805, in Fairfax County, VA, daughter of Edward and Catherine (Barker) Milstead. Edward Milstead did indeed leave a shilling to his daughter Jane Coe in his will of Feb. 2, 1771.
Embley's father William Coe was born in 1728 in Charles County, MD, died Oct. 9, 1792, in Fairfax County, VA, son of Richard and Jane (maiden name unknown) Coe. William Coe lived next door to Edward Milstead in Durham Lower Parish, Charles County, MD. They appear there together in the 1755 tax list.
Jane (Milstead) Ford was related to Jane (Milstead) Coe and was unrelated to William Coe. She was married to Thomas Ford of Fairfax County, VA. William and Jane Coe witnessed Thomas Ford's will, Aug. 27, 1774, in Fairfax County, VA.
This stuff about William Coe being related to Jane Ford was started back in the 1950s. It is untrue. Unfortunately, people keep posting it on the internet.
The maiden name of Richard Coe's wife is unknown. Richard Coe was born about 1680 in Charles County, MD, son of Richard and Mary Coe. The older Richard Coe was born about 1650 in England and immigrated to Charles County, MD, in the 1670s.
I hope this is helpful.

John,
Delighted to hear from you. Your grandfather Russell Burr Coe was a ggggg grandson of Richard Coe who emigrated from England to Charles County, MD, in the 1670s. There is no known relationship between Richard Coe and Timothy Coe, immigrant of 1652 to Northampton County, VA. It is quite possible, however, that Richard came from County Suffolk, where both Thomas Coe who was at Jamestown, VA, in 1608 and Robert Coe who immigrated to Boston, MA, in 1634, originated. Although Coes lived in Cambridge, Essex and Norfolk in the Middle Ages, they were concentrated in Suffolk, which lies between the other three counties. Sudbury, on the Essex / Suffolk line, seems to have been the center of Coe country. It was founded by the Vikings in about the year 800. Gestingthorpe, Essex, where Sir John Coe (1340-1415) lived and is buried is about five miles west of Sudbury. Boxford and Groton, Suffolk, where the families of Robert Coe and Thomas Coe lived for many generations, is about fiv!
e miles east of Sudbury.
Below I have included some information on your grandfather and his family from page 544 of the book "The Coe Families of Maryland and Virginia." For additional information, please see http://peggysue5.homestead.com/Coe.html
257. RUSSELL BURR8 COE (Clyde Miyard7 (145), William Isaiah6, John5, Walter4, William3, Richard2, Richard1) was born January 5, 1900, at Elizabeth, WV. A construction crane operator, he died December 21, 1954, at Glasgow, WV. Burial was at Montgomery Memorial Park.
He married (1) June 25, 1928, at Wellsburg, WV, Olive Marguerite Jones, born November 14, 1910, in Barnston, Quebec, Canada, died February 2, 1976, in Steubenville, OH; (2) January 13, 1936, in Kanawha County, WV, Mary Mae Kilburn, born at Boomer, WV.
Children (ii - iv b. in Fayette County, WV):
i. Colleen Mae, b. Aug. 5, 1929, in Steubenville, OH.
ii. Blanche Kay, b. 1936
iii. Ernest Lee, b. 1937.
iv. Robert Edward, b. Jan. 6, 1939.
v. Pauletta Sue, b. 1943 in Kanawha Co., WV.
I hope this is helpful.

Nell,
Alice (Griffin) Coe was born in 1874 in Arkansas or Missouri. She was married to Benjamin F. Coe of Cooke County, TX, and Carter County, OK. Benjamin Coe was born in November 1873 in Cooke County, oldest son of Charles Matthew and Josephine P. (Haile) Coe. His father, who was born January 2, 1847, in New York, was deputy sheriff of Cooke County. His mother was born in 1853 in Stone County, MO, daughter of Meade James and Livy Ann (Cavin) Haile. His mother and father were married February 28, 1873, in Cooke County.
Benjamin's brother Wilbur D. Coe and his family went with Ben and Alice to Love and Carter Counties, OK. Although Wilbur Coe and his wife Cora had a large family, Benjamin and Alice had no children. Wilbur died June 18, 1956, in Carter County, OK; his wife Cora died there May 25, 1963. Ben and Wilbur's father Charles M. Coe died in 1929 in Cooke County, TX, and was buried at Hibbit Cemetery, Gainesville.
It might be interesting to note that Charlie Coe, renowned as the best amateur golfer in US history, and who twice won the US Amateur Championship, was born in Carter County, OK, Oct. 26, 1923, son of Ross Wallace and Nellie (Knaur) Coe.
I hope this is helpful.

I am searching for information on the family of my Grandfather, Thomas Griffin.
Relatives of Thomas Griffin, living in Wilson, Carter Co. OK in the early 1900's were "Cousin Alice" ([possibly GRIFFIN) and her husband, Ben COE and "Cousin Jeff" (possibly GRIFFIN). My mother visited them several times as a young girl; however this is all she told me about the COE family. It is possible they lived in TX. before moving to Wilson OK.
This is the Documentation I have on my Grandparents. According to 1900 Census of Indian Territory Chickasaw Nation OK (later Ardmore, OK), Thomas GRIFFIN b. 1855 in AL, (location unknown) both parents b. SC. Thomas GRIFFIN m. Olivia S. Morrison 1894 possibly in or near McMillan, Marshall Co. OK. Olivia d/o Alexander Rhodes Morrison and Louisa Davis Hale.
Living nearby were some of Olivia's relatives, Martha Mae Hale & husband William H. Willis; Elizabeth Hale & husband John Shock Willis; & Griffin Goss Willis & wife Hanna House who lived in Madill, Marshall Co. OK.
A son b. 1895 & daughter b. 1899 were born in McMillan OK to the Thomas & Olivia. The Griffin family then moved to Ardmore, IT, (later Carter Co.) OK where they bought land & built Grocery Store.. Thomas farmed and Olivia operated Grocery Store.
Thomas d. Feb. 1909 in Ardmore OK. of a heart attack. Olivia & children stayed in Ardmore until early 1920's.
Thomas GRIFFIN m. Olivia Morrison when he was 39 years old so this could possibly have been his 2nd marriage. I have 2 pictures of Thomas GRIFFIN as an adult.
I would very much like to make contact with other family members of either Thomas or Olivia and the Coe families to share information I have.

Hi Cathy,
An entire chapter included in the book "The Coe Families of Maryland and
Virginia" is titled "Francis Peter Coe of Virginia." As you may be aware, Francis
Peter Coe first appears on record in 1772 in Shelburne Parish, Loudoun
County, VA. He had a large family of three sons and two daughters and is the
progenitor of one of the largest groups of Coes in the United States. The 66 Coe
families listed in the Mt. Airy, NC, phone directory all descend from him. The
book includes a biography of Francis Peter Coe and a complete record of his
descendants. During research on the book, I spent some very pleasant times in
the home of Ules Benton Coe in Mt. Airy. A Francis Peter Coe descendant, he was
very helpful to me in collecting information on the family and was a good
friend.
Unfortunately, I have been unable to determine if Roland Coe is related to
this family. I have not been successful in finding Roland's family beyond his
grandmother.
Thank You,
Carl Robert Coe

Carl,
Thanks for the information, again. I would like a picture of Graham Coe.
Would there ba nay relation to Francis Peter Coe in that area? So glad you had
a good trip. That is a geneoligists dream isnt it.
Also, would the family of Roland Coe be any relation to the line of
Francis Peter? I have atleast 2 Johns listed in this line. The book would have more
value to me if he is in my line. Thanks for your help. Cathy
Carl,
I would very much like you to send me the photos of the churches in
Gestingthorpe and Groton and the COE home, Tomblyns. Those would be a
delightful addition to the volumes I purchased from you and to the Timothy
COE information I have assembled. Thanks so much for the offer!

Cathy,
Roland Coe was born May 24, 1907, in Havana, IL, a hamlet of some 3000 people, located in the central part of the state. From his father, an amateur artist of fair ability, Roland inherited a talent for illustrating and cartooning which he developed so diligently that early in life his work brought him into the ranks of professionals.
At fifteen he was contributing regularly to the Buffalo Times. A few years later he joined the staff of the Buffalo Courier. His rise after that was almost meteoric, and by 1930 Judge, Life, Colliers and other publications sought his creative talent. Even England found a ready market for his work, his contributions appearing in Everybodys, The London Bystander, and the Passing Show.
Finally, on July 9, 1934, the New York Post was fortunate enough to secure Coes services, and his CROSSTOWN CARTOONS, drawn exclusively for the Post, gained enormous popularity. His clean, wholesome, and human art increased his admirers to a number comparable with those of the worlds most distinguished artist-humorists.
His mother Pearl of Mason County, IL, was born in 1879 and his sister Jeanette was born in Mason County in 1913.
Roland Coe's father Roy Coe was born in Illinois in December 1878. Roy's mother Mary was born in March 1847 in New York. Roy had a sister Nettie J. Coe who was born in September 1875 in Illinois. The family lived in Marshall County prior to moving to Havana.
Indications are that Roland's family is not descended from the Puritan immigrant Robert Coe of Suffolk, England, and Watertown, MA. It is possible that he is a descendant of John Coe who immigrated to Stamford, CT, in 1640. Robert and John Coe were sons of Henry and Mary (Vincent) Coe of Thorpe-Morieux, England. See my posting on Richard Elrich Coe in GenForum.
The Robert Coe family has received much attention because of the publication and availability of "Robert Coe, Puritan." Robert, though notable, was one of dozens of Coe immigrants. "The Coe Families of Maryland and Virginia," outlines the many early Coe immigrants who settled in those states. The earliest American Coe immigrant, Thomas Coe, Gentleman, arrived at Jamestown with the First Supply in 1608. Eventually, he and William Dyer attempted to overthrow the colony and have Captain Smith returned to England. Many American Coes trace their ancestry to Timothy Coe who settled in Northampton County, VA, in 1652 and Richard Coe, who settled in Charles County, MD, in the 1670s.
>From Richard Elrich Coe's research, he was able to establish that the John Coe who immigrated to Stamford, CT, in 1640 was a brother of Robert Coe, the Puritan immigrant of 1634.
I would be happy to send you an electronic copy of a portrait of Roland Coe if you are interested.
I hope this is helpful.
