Ray,
Good to hear from you. We have corresponded in the past. It is not likely that Samuel W. Coe and Sarah Louisa Shelton were the parents of Samuel Winfield Coe, born February 1862, seeing that they had a son Samuel born in 1879. It does seem probable, however, that Samuel Winfield Coe was their nephew. Noting that Samuel W. Coe's nephew Arthur Marcum signed Samuel Winfield Coe's marriage license makes it seem more likely. It would appear that Samuel Winfield Coe may have been an illegitimate son of one of Samuel and Elvira (Davis) Coe's daughters.
Complicating the issue, however, is the fact that Jacob and Louisa (McGlossen) Coe, who were married June 5, 1849, in Russell County, had a son Samuel born in 1862. I have no record of this Samuel Coe after his appearance in the 1870 census. As you are aware, the Coe families of Wayne and Russell Counties moved regularly between the two counties. It is interesting to note that Samuel Winfield Coe stated on his marriage license that his father was born in Wayne County. Jacob Coe was born in Russell County.
I have included below a biography of Samuel and Elvira (Davis) Coe's son Samuel W. Coe from pages 1197-1198 of the book "The Coe Families of Maryland and Virginia." For additional information, please see http://peggysue5.homestead.com/Coe.html
___________
4. SAMUEL W.3 COE (Samuel2 (2), Joshua1) was born in September 1833 in Wayne County, KY. He later moved to Russell County, KY, where he was apparently a farmer. Begining in 1863 his name appears on the rolls of the Russell County Militia and is listed every year through 1866, including an attached note stating that he and his brother James attended the battalion muster, Saturday, June 4, 1866, under Captain Edmund Cook of Company A. He died May 24, 1905.
He married Sarah Louisa Shelton, born August 1, 1844, in Kentucky, died February 14, 1884.
Children (ii, v, vii - ix b. in Russell County, KY; vi, x b. in Wayne County, KY):
i. ElizaT., b. 1863.
ii. Robert Pierson "Bob," b. March 18, 1865; d. May 2, 1942, in San Francisco, CA.

If Samuel Coe was born in 1793 and died after 1860 and his wife Elvira Davis Coe was born in 1803...not sure they would have had Samuel W. Coe born in 1868.

Roland,
I was delighted to see your reply. Perhaps the best way to answer your questions is to provide a copy of the biography of the family of Samuel Winfield Coe from pages 734-735 of the book "The Coe Families of Maryland and Virginia." I have included a copy below. For additional information, please see http://peggysue5.homestead.com/Coe.html
I would very much be interested in learning more about your family. You are obviously related to Charles E. Coe. Are you a son of Homer or Ernest?

Appreciated your reply to my message. I can supply you with some additional info.: Charley and Cora Coe moved from Russell County Kentucky in 1920s (Three daughters listed) to Illinois. Charley died 16 Jan 1930 in Decatur, Illinois. In the 1930 census four daugthers are listed. a Mary age 6, was shown, which means she must of been borned in 1924.
Cora moved to Chicago, Illinois. Her son Ernest died in Ingleside, Lake County, Illinois 25 Dec 1993. Homer, another son died in Pulaski County 6 Nov, 1993. Elsie(Violet) had a sister "Mrs. Marion Hoffman", who I don't know if this was Mary, Opal, or Gladys.
I am also trying to find out who Nannie Bell Owen parents were. Would you have any info on her?
Carl,
Thanks for the info. I had a question though. In all your research, did you
ever come across another Sarah Coe during that time period?
I know my ancestor married someone named Saunders, as that was her name
verified in the 1860 census. That source said she was 62 at the time, giving
here a birth year of about 1798. However, my grandmother's family history
notes say 1796. I suppose it is very possible that my grandma got Sarah's
birthdate and her parents' marriage date confused. I was always led to
believe that Sarah was born December 1796

I'm a cousin and would also like to know of this family's whereabouts. Here's what I know. Charles and Cora Coe were living in Bement, IL in 1927 when their son Jesse Marshall Coe was killed by a train at Attica, IN. Jesse's obit says that he had four sisters and two brothers. My mother is also a Coe and has met brother Homer and I think Elsie. She had an address for one of them at one time but I'm not sure if it's current.

Here's a little more info on Jesse Marshall Coe. Jesse was a cousin of mine. A newspaper article from the Bement Register, Bement, IL: Dated Oct. 27, 1927:"DIES FROM INJURIES"-"Jesse Marshall Coe was killed Sunday evening while attempting to board a moving train at Attica, Ind. His parents here were notified of the death and the Swenson ambulance brought the body here Monday.
The deceased was the son of Charles and Cora Coe, who moved from another locality to the William Tynan tenant residence 3 1/2 miles east of Bement only two weeks ago. At the time of his death he was only 16 years, 9 months and 21 days old. He is survived by his parents, four sisters and two brothers. He was an industrious young man and had left home with the expectation of finding employment.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from the family residence, conducted by Rev. G. C. Hitchcock, pastor of the local Presbyterian church. Burial was in the Bement cemetery." Hope this helps.

Steve,
Perhaps the best way to answer your questions is to provide you with a copy
of the biography of Sarah Coe's family from pages 728-729 of the book "The Coe
Families of Maryland and Virginia." I have included a copy below. For
additional information, please see http://peggysue5.homestead.com/Coe.html
Please note that William Saunders was a purchaser at Jacob Coe's estate sale
in 1812, four years prior to him marrying Jacob Coe's daughter Sarah. This
would indicate that he was perhaps a neighbor or friend of the family. You
might also note that two of Sarah's sisters also married Saunders, reportedly
brothers of William.
Sarah Coe's mother Jemima gave consent for her to marry William Saunders in
1818, indicating that she may not have been of age. Her birth can be estimated
at about 1800. Her parents were married December 22, 1796. Sarah's sister
Elizabeth, who married Nathaniel Saunders, September 12, 1816, was obviously the
oldest child.
3. JACOB2 COE (Francis Peter1) was born about 1770, probably in Loudoun
County, VA. First appearing on the tithe list of Loudoun County in 1789, he went
with his family to Pittsylvania County, VA, about 1790, and may have lived
for a while in Halifax County. He appears to be the Jacob Coe who appears on
record in Botetourt County, July 13, 1790, when he was appointed "Surveyor of the
Road." He appears on record in Pittsylvania County, February 4, 1794, when he
received payment from John Pannill for driving two trips to Petersburg and
for "three days hindrance." On April 14, 1794, he received payment from Pannill
for making another trip to Petersburg and for shop work. He appears in the
records of the Pittsylvania County court, August 16, 1806, when James Linn and
William Wembush filed a complaint against him.
Employed as a waggoner at the rate of $10 per month, he died in Pittsylvania
County in 1812. John Douglas was appointed administrator of his estate,
February 17, 1812. An inventory of the estate, which included a bay mare and colt, a
cow and calf, a saddle and bridle, a hoe, a beehive, two cotton wheels, a
flax wheel, a pine table, a barrel of corn, a pewter basin, and other items, was
taken February 24, 1812. Appraisers were William Smith, William H. Stone and
Nathan Glenn. Purchasers at the estate sale, held March 7, 1812, were Jemima
Coe, John Douglas, Leonard Davis, William Dunning, John Ballinger (son of
William and Martha Ballinger of Prince George's County, MD, and Fairfax County, VA),
Robert Wailer, Littleberry Lewis, John Gregory, William Sanders, William
Smith, Samuel Stone, and others. The total raised from the sale was £36.16.2. With
£2.6.43/4 paid the estate by Samuel Pannille, 15 shillings, 9 pence raised
from the sale of tobacco, £2.8.0 paid the estate for wages due, and £1 .4.0 owed
the estate by Daniel Lounden, total value was £43.10.33/4. Distribution
included £1.12.0 paid to John Glenn for a note, 15 shillings paid George Towns,
£34.10.0 paid St. Clements, and £6 paid to John Douglas for trouble as
administrator, leaving the estate a balance of 13 shillings, 3 3/4 pence. Final
settlement was made June 20, 1814. Witnesses were Samuel Stone, William Smith, Joseph
E. Hailey, and N. Tucker.
He married December 22, 1796, in Halifax County, VA, Jemima Terrell, with
Richard Terrell as surety. Jemima Coe, reportedly daughter of William and Martha
(Patterson) Terrell, appears on record in Pittsylvania County, VA, on October
8, 1818, when she gave consent for her daughter Sarah to marry. She likewise
gave her consent for daughters Nancy and Lucy to marry in 1827 and 1830,
respectively, although she made a note on Lucy's marriage consent that she was under
age. She is listed in the 1820 census of Pittsylvania County as a female over
45 years of age, with a male 10-15, a female 0-10 - obviously Lucy - and two
females 16-26 in her home.
Children:
i. Elizabeth, b.c.1798; d. after 1870 in Halifax Co., VA; m. Sept. 12, 1816,
in Pittsylvania Co., VA, Nathaniel Baker Sanders (Saunders), b. 1797, d.
before 1870 in Halifax Co., VA, son of Jesse and Phoebe (Rowland) Saunders; Jemima
Coe gave her consent. Interestingly, an Elizabeth Coe was m. May 29, 1821, in
Pittsylvania County to Uriah Fisher. Griffeth Dickinson performed the ceremony
for both marriages. Children: Martha Amanda, b. 1817; Catherine, b. April 30,
1819; Susan, b.c. 1820; Nancy, b.c. 1825; Jacob, b.c. 1826; William, b.c.
1830; Nathaniel Baker Jr., b.c. 1831; Amon, b.c. 1833; Jemima Frances, b.c. 1834;
Sarah, b.c. 1836; Raleigh W., b.c. 1838.
ii. Sarah, b.c.1800; m. Oct. 18, 1818, in Pittsylvania Co., VA, William
Sanders (Saunders), reportedly son of Jesse and Phoebe (Rowland) Saunders.
iii. Nancy, b. Nov. 1, 1802; d. May 1, 1876, in Lawrence Co., KY; m. Nov. 2,
1827, in Pittsylvania Co., VA, Jesse Marion Sanders (Saunders), b. Nov. 10,
1795, in VA, d. Aug. 29, 1880, in Lawrence Co., KY, reportedly son of Jesse and
Phoebe (Rowland) Saunders. Burial was at Kitchen Cemetery, Blaine, KY.
Children: Nathaniel, b. Aug. 1828 in VA; Mary, b. March 26, 1830, in Patrick Co., VA;
Ann, b. April 1832; Judy, b. Jan. 20, 1833, in Lawrence Co., KY; Allen, b.
May 1835; Cleopatra, b. 1839 in Lawrence Co., KY; Peter, b. Sept. 1840 in
Lawrence Co., KY; Martha, b. 1843 in Lawrence Co., KY.
12. iv. WILLIAM, b.c.1806, probably in Pittsylvania Co., VA.
v. Lucy, b.c.1812; m. Dec. 29, 1830, in Pittsylvania Co., VA, William C.
Walker, her mother giving consent and stating that she was under age.

Hello, I am searching for a Sarah Coe, born circa 1796, she lived in
Virginia. Our family tradition says that she married a William Saunders,
and had at least one daughter Susan A. (or Susannah) who married a Patrick
Hannagan from Cork, Ireland.
In my searching the web, I have discovered a Sarah Coe who married a
William Saunders in 1818 in Pittsylvania Co., VA. Unfortunately, there were
no other dates given nor places nor mention of any descendants. But the
time frame for Sarah Coe to be married at 22 sound about right.
Does anyone have any information? I would really appreciate it.
Thanks,
Steve Donovan

Jim,
This is Carl Robert Coe, author of "The Coe Families of Maryland and Virginia" (Columbus, OH, privately published, 2002). I'm not sure how much help I can be. Unfortunately, I do not recognize Cecil Marion Coe. You may be aware that he died July 12, 1943, in Latah County, ID, just north of Lewiston. My first assumption was that he must be a Northern Coe. However, he is not listed in the book "Robert Coe, Puritan, His Ancestors and Descendants, 1340-1910" (Boston, privately published, 1911), the definitive work on the Northern branch of the family.
Darrell Dean Coe, who was born April 5, 1939, in Lewiston, ID, was not a son of Cecil Marion and Nellie C. (Pearson) Coe. Darrell's parents were Donald Llewellyn and Pauline A. (Gronde) Coe. A complete history of his family is listed on page 990 of "The Coe Families of Maryland and Virginia." For additional information, please see http://peggysue5.homestead.com/Coe.html
Nor is Lonnie Ray Coe, born March 14, 1950, at Lewiston, ID, related to Cecil Marion Coe. He and his wife Diana (Galles) Coe currently live at 1826 8th Avenue, Lewiston. His parents are French and Margaret Lillian (Fallwell) Coe, who moved to Lewiston from Coe, Nicholas County, WV. A complete history of this family is listed on page 565 of "The Coe Families of Maryland and Virginia."
You might order a copy of Cecil's death certificate. It will give the names of his parents, date and location of birth, and possibly the name of his son. The cost is $13. Order from this website: http://www2.state.id.us/dhw/vital_stats/appmenu.html
I regret that I could not be more helpful.

I say your posting on Darrell Coe. I am researching the Coe line from Idaho about the same time you are. My g-great grandfathers (Michael Pearson) daughter Nellie (Pearson) b 1891 married 1) John Rathbone on 2/15/1919 and 2) Cecil Coe on 8/31/1925. They lived in Tammany, a suburb of Lewiston where Cecil died in 1943. I found Nellie died in Yuba City California in 1976 after moving there in 1973 which I assume was to live with a child in her old age. Her death certificate states she had one son, 5 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. I have contact one Coe line in Lewiston and they are somwhat new to the area from WV but new Cecil.
With Darrell being born in 1939 it is very possible he is at least one child of Nellie and Cecil.
The really odd thing is Nellie's death certificate states her informer son was named Don King. This would indicate she married a thrid time to a King but her death certificate states her last name as Coe not King.
My home e-mail is pjames33(a)qwest.net and I have more information if you see a connection.
