Message Board Post:
Angela,
Thank you so much for your request for information on Chester Ravenell Coe. It is always such a delight to hear from others interested in their family's history.
I have been aware of your Chester Coe for many years. I have some information on your family that I collected doing research for the book “The Coe Families of Maryland and Virginia.”
My family was also in Liberty County, FL, which was where Chester Coe spent his later years. Major Jesse Coe, who was born February 4, 1782, at "Coe's Addition," Worcester County, MD, settled in 1830 in Gadsden County, FL. He immediately went about buying up land in the area, including the 1000-acre Appalachicola Indian Reservation in June 1835 from Chief Yellow Hair. Before his death, which occurred in Quincy, FL, January 16, 1859, Jesse's cotton plantation known as Mount Pleasant and Toney Planatation, located in Gadsden and Jackson Counties, consisted of 4,485 acres. He also owned land in Liberty County, where he spent time.
An ordained Methodist Episcopal minister, Jesse gave the invocation at the statehouse in Tallahassee, June 23, 1845, when Florida became a state. I found a wonderful portrait of him at the Florida State Archives.
Chester Ravenell “Luther” Coe was born January 21, 1809, in New York and died December 9, 1884, at Hosford, Liberty County, FL. A miller, Coe Mills, FL, was named in his honor. His father was born in Connecticut. Chester lived in Dayton, OH, before the Civil War and moved to Charleston, SC, during the war. His wife Rebecca Bradwell was born November 24, 1823, died December 25, 1882, at Hosford, FL. They were married in Ohio.
Children:
1. Joel Robert Green Coe, b. Oct. 25, 1842; July 02, 1860, Goose Creek Parish, Charleston, SC.
2. Thomas Lewis Luther Coe, b. Nov. 1, 1849; d. June 08, 1932, Tallahassee, FL.
3. Cervilla Catherine Coe, b. April 13, 1858, at Goose Creek, S.C; d. April 11, 1886, at Hosford, FL.
Mary B. Coe, the only known sibling of Chester Coe, was born in 1805 and died March 15, 1883, in Cleveland, OH. Her husband’s last name Fowler. Children unknown. Cuyahoga County, OH, death records should list her parents’ names.
Here are some other tidbits:
· Thomas L. Coe and Laura Bradwell, married Sept. 21, 1871, Liberty County, FL.
· Thomas L. Coe and Louisa Maige, married May 19, 1887, in Tallahassee, FL.
· Savilla A.R. Coe and Walter Maige, married Jan. 19, 1895, in Tallahassee, FL.
· Chester Ravenell Coe, born about 1875, son of Thomas L. and Laura (Bradwell) Coe, married Ellen Hart Cromartie, May 2, 1906, in Tallahassee (Leon County, FL, Marriage, 1:282).
· Chester Ravenell Coe married Willodine Laseter, March 14, 1942, in Tallahassee (4:544).
· Chester Ravenell Coe married Peggy Leona Johnson, Aug. 28, 1981, in Greensboro, NC (Guilford County, NC, Marriages, #1955).
· Chester Ravenell Coe married Louise Coe, June 12, 1983, in Tallahassee (63:205).
· Louisa (Maige) Coe died Nov. 13, 1921, in Tallahassee (Florida Deaths, 1391131).
· Ellen (Cromartie) Coe died in 1945 in Tallahassee (#1153121).
· Chester Ravenell Coe died Aug. 1958 in Tallahassee (#29690).
· Chester Ravenell Coe, age 83 (born April 27, 1914), died May 31, 1997, in Tallahassee, son of Chester Ravenell and Ellen Hart (Cromartie) Coe (SS records).
· A Chester Coe Jr. died March 31, 1994, in Tampa, FL (born May 16, 1930).
My suspicion is that Chester Ravenell Coe was descended from John Coe who immigrated from Suffolk, England, to Stamford, CT, in 1640. A very dear friend, Richard Elrich Coe, a descendant of this John Coe, spent many years researching this family. With considerable effort, he put together a remarkable family history. A successful advertising executive, he was a brilliant man. He sent me several excerpts from the book as he prepared it for publication. I was overwhelmed at the depth of his research and the detail and clarity of his presentation. Unfortunately, he died during final preparation, January 17, 1987. The book was never published.
You might try writing to his widow, but I'm not sure she is still at Richard's old address. He lived at 600 S Central, Glendale, CA 91204.
I wish you luck in your pursuits! Please let me know what you are able to uncover. Perhaps I might have the pleasure of adding to what you find. For additional information, please see http://peggysue5.homestead.com/Coe.html
Good luck!

I find this interesting information, as my Great Grandfather was Dr. Calvary "Cale" Coe who married, Eva Crary, both from Ohio. They had two children Day and Carlos Williamson Coe. I am interested in knowing if those names were familiar in the family tree and if you have any tidbit info on them. Thank you.

Stanley Coe, is my Uncle. My father and his father were brothers. This Coe family goes back to John Coe, he was a cousin of Robert Coe, the Puritan, and arrived here in the 1600s.
Stanley was one of eight children.

Jo, you have no idea how glad I was to receive your message. I think it definitely links my g grandfather Ariel Brunson Coe with yours. This is how I think it works. Ariel Coe, born in CT, had children by two wives. I believe that Ariel and Lydia Crosby had a son named Reuben, as well as the daughter Lydia. Reuben had at least two sons, Jacob and Ariel. There was a wide gap in their ages. Jacob came to Oregon before 1850. Ariel Brunson Coe was being raised by the Robinson family, according to the 1850 Illinois census. The elder Ariel was then living with George and Lydia Snyder, near the Robinsons. According to the Monmouth Co., Ill. records, Geo. Snyder was administor of Reuben Coe's estate. Jacob G. Coe settled in Astoria, OR. He had several children, among them one name Reuben. It has been established that Jacob G. Coe and Ariel B. Coe are brothers. Jacob was born in 1828 (or 1829) in Delaware Co., NY. Ariel B. Coe was born in NY or Illinois in 1842. I hav!
e a family tree history filled in by a researcher in the Astoria Historical Society that shows Ariel's father being Reuben Coe, his mother is listed by her first name only- Teresa. I would be very interesting in corresponding further about these Coes. Thanks Again, Lois

Lois, my gg grandmother was Lydia Coe Snyder. Her father was Ariel Coe, born 1722 in Connecticut. Her mother was Lydia Crosby born in Rhode Island. I know that the Snyders lived near the Robinsons because my g grandmother, Nancy Stitt Snyder was, I believe, named for Nancy Stitt Robinson. Also, Nancy Snyder's sister Mary married a Robinson.
I do not know the connection between Ariel Coe and Ariel Brunson Coe, but I suspect that the older Ariel was Brunson's grandfather. I suspect that my Ariel Coe lived with his son in 1840--There was a James Coe who had one boy under 5, 1 girl 5-10, 1 man 20-30--James?, no woman right age to be mother of the children, one man 60-70, and 1 woman 70-80. Ariel's wife was a year older than he b. Jul 13, 1771. I'll look up the census again to see if it was taken after 1840. George Snyder was in the next township. There was also a Peter Coe who lived in Township 12N 1 W. Snyders lived ih 12N 2 w.
I do not have a list of siblings for Lydia Coe Snyder. Her parents were living in Warren County, PA when she married George Snyder. She was born in NY.
Hope this helps.
