Bill,
I was delighted to see your request for information on Charles Hanson Pitts Coe of Baltimore. A complete history of his family is presented in the recently published book "The Coe Families of Maryland and Virginia." I have posted below his biography on the book. For additional information please see http://peggysue5.homestead.com/Coe.html
5. CHARLES HANSON PITTS4 COE (Alexander Benson3 (3), William2, Samuel1) was born August 21, 1840, in Baltimore, MD. Named after noted Baltimore attorney Charles Hanson Pitts, he worked as a bookkeeper, living on North Greene Street in Baltimore. On November 26, 1861, "Charles H. P Coe, citizen of Baltimore" was arrested for sedition and insurrection against the Union and taken to Fort McHenry. Held with eight other political prisoners, including Baltimoreans Richard Thomas, alias Colonel Zarnova; Robert W. Rasin; and Thomas Mortimer, on December 2, 1861, he was sent to Fort Lafayette, along with Zarnova and others.
Zarnova was one of the more interesting creations of the Civil War. Inspiration for and leader of Zarnova’s Zouaves, six months prior he and twenty-five of his men successfully commandeered the ship St. Nicholas on its regular run from Baltimore to Georgetown and delivered it to Confederates at Fredericksburg, VA, capturing the Monticello, the Mary Pierce and the Margaret in route. Celebrated as a Confederate hero at Fredericksburg, Virginia Governor John Letcher commissioned him a colonel in the Army of Virginia during the celebration. In July Zarnova attempted similar exploits aboard the Georgiana in the Chesapeake. Not long after he was arrested aboard the Mary Washington as it steamed up the Patapsco toward Baltimore carrying a prisoner who had been captured in Anne Arundel County for participating in the April 19 Pratt Street disturbance. After being held at Fort McHenry, Zarnova was delivered to Fort Lafayette with Coe in December. After repeated requests for p!
arole, Zarnova was exiled to Paris.
Coe languished in prison until January 19, 1862, when he wrote a letter to the US Secretary of State, making certain proposals for his release, among others that he might be allowed upon his vow to proceed to Richmond for the purpose of effecting an exchange for himself, thus confessing disloyalty and treason. The secretary contacted Major General John A. Dix, who was familiar with Coe’s case, and on January 25 recommended to the secretary that Coe’ s request be honored. An order was accordingly issued February 14 from the Department of State directing Lieutenant Colonel Martin Burke, commander at Fort Lafayette, to discharge Coe on his giving his parole of honor to return to that fort within thirty days unless within twenty days Mr. E. B. Botwell, then held prisoner by insurgents at Richmond, should be unconditionally released and sent within Union lines. Coe gave the required parole of honor and was released from Fort Lafayette, February 19. A member of Com!
pany D, 2nd Maryland Cavalry, Confederate Army, he was later a department store clerk in Baltimore, living at 168 Mulberry and 339 West Lombard. He died in Baltimore, October 9, 1870.
He married May 30, 1860, in Baltimore, MD, Ruth A. Deaver, born 1835, died July 6, 1892. After her husband’s death she lived at 408 Lexington, 497 W Lafayette, 646 Conway Street, and 409 W Cross, Baltimore. Burial was at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
Children (b. in Baltimore, MD):
i. Charles H. P., b. Feb. 21, 1861; d. Feb. 15, 1923, in Baltimore, MD. A clerk and bartender, in the 1880s he lived with his mother at 408 Lexington and 497 W Lafayette, Baltimore. In 1891 he lived at 208 Pearl Street, in 1900 at 613 W Mulberry, and in 1920 at 15 Pearl Street. Burial was at Baltimore Cemetery.
ii. Caroline Jane, m. J. Kent Ordway of Boston, MA. Child: Louise.
I hope this is helpful.

Sandra,
I was delighted to see your post. Isn’t it interesting trying to track down our elusive ancestors. My family moved from Baltimore to here in Ohio in the mid-1800s.
I talked with your brother Lowry’s wife Janice a few months ago. I believe she told me she was director of the Office of Media Services in DC.
Samuel Coe has been a mystery. As I mentioned in the message to Ken, it seems too coincidental that he would live so close to the family of Richard Coe Jr. and not be connected. The family of Richard Coe was the only Coe family on the Western Shore in the Colonial era. Furthermore, Richard Jr’s son John, born 1716 in Charles County, named his oldest son Samuel. The name Samuel was also used by the family of Richard Coe Jr’s son William, born 1727 in Charles County. With Samuel’s birth being in 1728, he would fit very nicely into that family. Richard Coe Sr. first appears on record November 26, 1779, at Calvertstowne (now Upper Marlboro), which at the time was part of Calvert County. I noticed your marriage license at the courthouse in Upper Marlboro when I was there doing research many years ago.
Are you familiar with the book “The Coe Families of Maryland and Virginia”? Recently published, it contains a complete record of our families. The material that Jim and Gail Ewin put together for the reunions is included in the books. Please see, http://peggysue5.homestead.com/Coe.html
I would be very glad to hear from you.

Hi Ken,
My g-grandfather was also Wm. Gwynn. My grandfather was Buck Armstrong and my father was Lowry. I am wondering if you are my uncle Kenneth's son? I was delighted to hear from you! Did you ever attend any of the Coe Reunions that were held in Maryland and Virginia? There were usually cousins in attendance from many of the branches that decended from WG.
I have also been trying to make the connection between Samuel and Richard Jr. As I'm sure you know, the difficulty in making the connection is due to the fact that most of the Calvert County records have been destroyed. I have found a number of references to Richard Jr. and Sr. in old Charles Co. records. The problem with the Samuel-Richard connection is that Richard Jr. was born in Charles Co. and then died in Charles County in 1757 (29 years after Samuel's birth in Calvert Co.) so it appears that Richard spent his life in Charles Co. Therefore, it seems unlikely that Richard Jr. would have been a member of the Christ Church in Calvert Co. where Samuel's birth is recorded.
It has been awhile since I actively worked on the Coe genealogy so I will need to pull some records out to recall specifics. I may have located records placing Richard Jr. in Charles Co. at specific dates. As I recall, there was some confusion about the wife of one of the Richards. In my geneaIogy software, I have entered "Richard Sr. married to Mary" and "Richard Jr. married to Ann" but one of them showed up with a spouse named Jane. What info do you have on this?
I don't think that I knew that Richard Sr. was born in Groton Parish, Suffolk. Where did you obtain that information? I seem to remember that my uncle Kenny made a trip to England to do Coe research so, I may not have all the info that has been compiled. I do have some wonderful information on the Armstrong and the Lamb family line.
I think that the Coes were born with genealogy in their blood which is great because I have been the beneficiary of alot of family information. I recall a connection being made between Samuel and a son of Richard Jr., which may have been possible since Richard Jr. was age 48 when Samuel was born.
I look forward to hearing from you. Please email directly at scw(a)elecdev.com.

Ken,
I was interested to see you post. The evidence would indicate that Samuel Coe was connected to the Coe family of Charles County. Unfortunately, proof has yet to be discovered. Hopefully, someone will be able to find the missing link.
Many years ago John E. Coe of Chicago speculated that Richard Coe of Maryland came from Suffolk to Charles County in 1651. Unfortunately, this too proved to be incorrect. Richard Coe of Charles County was born about 1650 and emigrated to Maryland about 1675. He first appears on record November 26, 1679, at Calvertstowne, when he was paid 200 pounds of tobacco for a wolf's head. In 1708 he was appointed tax constable of Charles County. He died there in 1725 at age about 75. For additional information, please see http://peggysue5.homestead.com/Coe.html
I would be delighted to hear from you.

Carl,
Do you know the connection between Daniel Coe(1801) and wife Mary Gladden to Jesse Delano and Ella. There has got to be 1 or 2 generations in there. I'd sure appreciate it.
Sincerely, Jack

Judy,
I was interested to see your request for information on Vernard Delano Coe. He has been of some interest to me as well. My father James Paul Coe was born September 10, 1922, in York Township, Union County, OH. As you note, Vernard’s sister Florence E. Coe was born May 25, 1882, in York Township.
Vernard and Florence were the only children of Jesse Delano and Ella (Penhorwood) Coe, who were married May 14, 1881, in Union County. There are still many Penhorwood and Coe families here in Union County.

Looking for any info on my g-g-g-g grandfather, Henry COE. He was born Oct
11, 1819. I don't know where, and I don't know who his parents were. He died
April 23, 1878, a suicide, in Covington Township, Tioga County, Pa. He
married Irene Covert. They had 2 sons:
Edward COE b. April 26, 1842, in Delhi, Delaware County, NY. He died Oct 23,
1913 in Jamestown, Chautauqua County, NY.
Desavignia COE b. Mar 18, 1844 in Tioga County, PA. He died Mar 11, 1912 in
Jamestown, NY.
There were also 3 daughters, but all I have are their married surnames from
obituaries.
If anyone has ANY info on this COE line, I would be so grateful. I've hit a
brick wall here.
Many thanks,

expensive, however. The paperback runs $102.50. And the one listed in the
out of print section is about $270. However, there is a wealth of
information in this book, published in 1911. Judy Anderson
