Foster's Daily Democrat (Dover, NH), Sept. 13, 1999
Serena Paine Hurlbert
DURHAM - Serena Coe Paine Hurlbert, 88, died Sept. 11, 1999 in Exeter,
after a long battle with a
failing body. A private service will be held in the fall.
Serena was the daughter of Richard and Sarah Crapo Tappan Coe. She grew
up in Hyde Park, Mass.,
and graduated from the Brimmer School and Wheaton College. She spent summers
at The Pines, her
grandparents home in Durham, and in 1937 she married New Hampshire author
Philbrook Ten Eyck
Paine.
Phil and Serena lived in Durham for the next 41 years, first in a house
they built on Woodman Road, then
at Phils boyhood home, Shankhassick Farm on Durham Point Road. They cruised
the Maine coast,
traveled the inland waterway to Florida and the Bahamas, and were founding
members of the Great Bay
and Lubberland yacht clubs. Phil wrote of her, "She loves her family, her
friends, flowers, her bridge
club, and her cat."
After Phils death from cancer, Serena married Stuart Churchill Hurlbert,
who had been her dancing
school partner when they were children. Stuarts wife Jane who also died
of cancer, had been Serenas
college roommate. This happy blending of past and present was cut short
when Stuart was killed by a
drunken driver. In 1994, Serena finally concluded that Shankhassick was
too difficult for a woman alone,
and she moved to the Riverwoods retirement community in Exeter.
A longtime member of the Society of Colonial Dames in New Hampshire, she
chaired its finance
committee and painted the picket fence of its Moffatt-Ladd house in Portsmouth.
In 1991, her name was
placed on the National Colonial Dames Roll of Honor. Like her mother before
her, Serena was also a
longtime member of the Tuesday Afternoon Club of Durham.
She is survived by her daughter Sarah Paine Ford, son-in-law, Daniel Ford,
and granddaughter, Katherine
Serena Ford, all of Durham; step-children Stuart Hurlbert of Delmar, Calif.,
Cynthia Steil of Boston,
Mass., Susan Etkind of Cohasset, Mass., and Richard Hurlbert of Rockland,
Maine, and five
step-grandchildren.
--------
Contributions in Serenas memory may be made to the Durham Historic Association,
P.O. Box 305,
Durham, NH 03824. Arrangements are by the Kent and Pelzcar Funeral Home,
41 Exeter St.,
Newmarket.

Betsey J. Coe, 79, helped get art into Maine schools
Betsey J. Coe, 79, of Bristol, Maine, died Feb. 20 from lung cancer at
Miles Memorial
Hospital in Damariscotta, Maine.
She was born in Arlington, the daughter of Adelaide Stickney and Hosmer
Ayer Johnson.
She attended Belmont Hill School, Ashley Hall in Charleston, S.C., Colby
Junior College in
New London, N.H., and Longee Music School in Boston.
Betsey married Kilborn " Peter " Coe Jan. 8, 1947. They moved from Marblehead
to South
Freeport, Maine, to Augusta, Maine, to South Bristol and, finally, to Bristol.
Betsey was an accomplished pianist, artist and designer. She was articulate,
intelligent,
warm and an artistic lady. She was a " Rooseveltian " Democrat.
She had a bill passed in the Maine state Legislature to give a percent
of the cost of
building schools to allow the schools to purchase art to be hung in the
schools. She
formed the Parents Creative Arts Council in Augusta, which borrowed art
from museums
and corporations that were hung in the schools of the Augusta area. During
the last year
of that program, there were approximately 200 volunteers that hung approximately
1,400
exhibits in the schools.
Betsey was the guiding light of Community Concerts, which brought musicians
to Augusta.
When that series was no longer available, she was a founding member of
a group called "
Forum A " that also brought musicians to Augusta.
She was a member of the Maine State Arts and Humanities Commission and
the Maine
State Library Commission.
Betsey published a book titled " Sur la Table, " for distribution to her
family, telling the
story of her glamorous aunt, Rebecca Hamilton. She just finished a book,
" Willful Women,"
also for family and friends, telling the amazing tales of ancestral and
current women in
her family.
Betsey designed her last three homes. The current one, for which she also
did the
working drawings, was " super insulated. " The house was " door blown "
tested by the
state energy department and found to be the tightest house they had ever
tested at that
time.
Surviving are her husband, and her son, Jonathan Brooks Coe of Jamaica
Plain; a brother,
Edward Ayer Johnson of New London, N.H.; and five nieces. Her daughter,
Christina Wells
Coe, predeceased her.
There will be private memorial services at a later date.
In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to the Iris Network for the Blind,
189 Park Ave.,
Portland, ME 04102.

Subject: [COE-L] Coe/Andrews/Dare family tree!
Well I've reached a dead end in my research. Up till about 1½-2 weeks ago I
was stuck on My Great Grandparents Charles Coe and Hannah Andrews, both born
in England, both buried in Maryborough, Queensland, Australia. But recently
got Charles' Birth Certificate which gave us his parent William Coe and
Charlotte Dare! who lived in a large house in Finchingfeild, Essex. But it
is at this point that I am at a loss for records!
Also does anyone have the English Coat of Arms of the Coe family?? of at
least a description!
Thanks in Advance
