Carol,
JAMES RIGGS COE was born July 8, 1811, in Madison County, KY. As a young
man he settled with his mother in Vermilion County, IL. During the Black
Hawk War of 1832 he, then age twenty, joined an Edgar County company of
militia under Captain Robert Griffin, 1st Regiment, 2nd Brigade, Illinois
Mounted Volunteers, and served from June 19 to August 15. They were marched
to Fort Dixon on the Rock River to repulse Black Hawk's Indian attack. On
September 16, 1835, "James Riggs Coe of Champaign County Illinois patented
40 acres of land in Champaign County, the South East quarter of the North
West quarter of section Twenty-seven in township Twenty." He received
another 80 acres the same day. He received another 40 acres, November 1,
1839. That same year he moved to Henry County, MO, and later located in
Bates County. There he lived in the Pleasant Gap Community until driven
out by border fighting. He owned two 80-acre tracts of land in Henry
County, patented in 1844. They sold in 1847. In 1861, after Order No. 11,
the family relocated to Marshall, Saline County, MO.
"James R. Coe, born and reared in Indiana, went to Virginia after he had
attained his majority and was there married, subsequent to which time he
removed to Illinois and afterward to Missouri, where he prospered in his
undertakings as a farmer and stockman. He became one of the substantial
representatives of financial interests in his county and his business
activity was the secret of his success. In politics he was a strong and
influential Democrat, but without desire for political office, preferring
to give his undivided attention to his business interests. At the time of
the Civil War his sympathies were strongly aroused in behalf of the south,
so that the northern sympathizers feared his influence and made it very
unpleasant for him in his home locality. Both armies foraged off of his
place, taking his stock and personal property, and at last the northern
troops burned his dwelling and other farm buildings. He and his family then
sought refuge in Saline county, Missouri, where he remained until after the
close of the war, when he sold his old homestead and purchased a farm in
Benton county, Missouri, spending his remaining days there. He was then too
old to ever fully recuperate his lost possessions, but he nevertheless, by
indefatigable industry, won a competence for himself and his family. From
early manhood he was a consistent Methodist and his life was always
actuated by honorable principles and devotion to whatever he believed to be
right. The poor and needy found in him a warm friend and his neighbors
appreciated his social nature and kindly spirit. He was six feet in height,
of medium weight and possessed a strong and vigorous constitution that
enabled him to do much hard work in his earlier manhood." (Paddock, "A
Twentieth Century History and Biographical Record of North and West Texas,"
2:16-19)
By 1870 he was living in Benton County, MO, where he bought a 94-acre
farm three miles north of Warsaw. He died there, April 16, 1878. Burial
was in a private cemetery at Warsaw.
He married (1) December 18, 1834, in Champaign County, IL, Elizabeth
Stanford, born January 1, 1818, in Wayne County, IN, daughter of Philip
Minor and Mary (Boyd) Stanford. She died April 18, 1874, in Benton County,
MO. He married (2) April 6, 1876, in Benton County, Matilda J. Huffman.
Children:
1. Mary Elizabeth, b. Nov. 28, 1835.
2. Thaddius Constantine, b. March 27, 1837.
3. Martha Jane, b. Jan. 27, 1839.
4. Elias Thomas, b. Feb. 17, 1841, in Henry Co., MO.
5. Elizabeth R., b. and d. June 3, 1843.
6. Philip Stanford (twin), b. June 3, 1843.
7. Jerusha McGowan, b. Oct. 3, 1845.
8. Margaret Thomas, b. July 30, 1848.
9. William Henry, b. Jan. 27, 1852; d. July 28,1955.
10. James Andrew, b. Feb. 13, 1854.
11. Allen Brown, b. Nov. 12, 1856, in Bates Co., MO.
I hope this is helpful.

Thank You Carl. Where do you think Martha Jane Coe was born, I have Missouri, but maybe it should be Illinois!!
We have tried to find a death Cert for Martha Jane in Cal. but they were not required to be recorded until 1905. She died before 1900. So hoping a marriage cert for her and Levi Haynes has some clues. But really what we need is the Haskins connection. And I am afraid that beings it was a short marriage, and she moved to her family, then to California, that there probably isn't much information.
Our Haynes connection, the elderly lady, really did'nt know the family very well. She didn't like to socialize so her husband went to family functions, but she didn't.
So far no luck find out what happened to Calvin, either. But pretty sure he wasn't in California. Please send me any new information that you find, I will do the same if you like!!
P.S. Thank You again, if you have any more information, would love that too. GOOD LUCK with the new book Carol cyberdad(a)cvc.net wanted to send this to the message board, but can't remember how
Carl
Would you please reserve a copy of the next printing for the Clay Co.Tn

oops, I sent that first one by accident.
Carl,
I was recently in IL at my mother's house and am slowing laying claim to my
grandfather's research on COE. In going through his50 years of work, I found
a letter from you to him, Col. Edward H. Coe, (or maybe it was to his brother
Douglas). I only read it quickly, but it was requesting info on the Maryland
Coes as I recall. Unfortunately, he was little help to you since our line is
from Robert the Puritan. I thought it was with the stuff Ibrought back this
trip, but I guess I left it there for now. It is dated from at least 20
years ago as I remember. I thought "what a small world".
I do have in the stuff I brought home, a letter to him from a John edwin Coe
dated 1953. He was in the Elijah Coe / Ann Smallwood line. He references a
manuscript (never published) written by Benjamin Dixon on the Coe Families of
Maryland. He says it was in the National Genealogical Society Library on
Mass. Ave. Washington, however he had been unable to locate it. He also
attached several gene. outlines of Coes/ Midwest, Coes of Loudon CO. , VA,
and Coes of Prince George CO., MD If these are of interest to you, I would
gladly mail copies to you. There is also a section on Thomas Coe and Timothy
Coe, and also one titled "The Lost children of Elijah and Ann (Smallwood) Coe.
Good luck with your book.
Howard Parthum
Rick,
As you are aware, a limited edition of "The Coe Families of Maryland and
Virginia" was printed early last year. Only a few were printed and they
did not last long. The purpose was mainly to check layout and content and
to get feedback from others. One might say it was a pre-production trial.
Because they were so expensive to produce, I reluctantly let only a few
people who were willing to cover the costs, have copies. Binding alone was
$70 per set.
A second printing is ready to go to press. Again, it will be a limited
edition -- trial II. The previous printing went extremely well, albeit
somewhat expensive. It is a bit costly to print just a few books.
They are beautiful, however! Handsomely bound in rich textured Spanish
brown and embossed in 24-carat gold, I'm very proud of them. The 1499-page
text represents over twenty-two years of work. I have attached a brochure.
Printing costs for the first run were about $130 per set (1499 pages -- two
volumes), with an additional $35 per book for binding. Total cost per set
was at $200. It costs an additional $11.80 to ship them via US mail (they
are heavy). I can get a slight break if I ship them UPS. I know the costs
are extreme, but you are aware of my demand for quality.
If you would like to reserve a copy, please let me know. I was able to
save a few pages by changing layout. The second printing will be 1467
pages. With shipping, the total will be $210. I can accept a personal
check or funds can be transferred from a credit card by logging onto
paypal.com. All you need is my name and email address. Please include a
shipping address.
I know they are a bit costly, but it's the best I can do with a limited
edition. I'd really like you to have a set. The price only includes my
printing costs. They contain a complete history of your Coe family.
Advance payment must be received no later than March 15. The books should
be available in the next six to eight weeks.
