Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Hi folks--
There seems to be some confusion about addressing messages.
This list is set to send messages to the list when you use your
return mail feature on your email program.
If you want to send a message to the list, use the list address:
COE-L(a)rootsweb.com
If you want to send a message to the list adminstrator, use this address:
COE-L-request(a)rootsweb.com
If you want to write a private message directly to someone from the
list, don't use your return mail feature. Start a new message and
find that person's email address in the "From" line of the header in
the list message which they wrote to the list.
Yah-all have been pretty quiet lately. Hope everyone is finding lots
of genealogy answers from other sources (or having a fun summer off) <grin>
Joyce
If you're subscribed to this list then you'll get all the postings to the
list in addition to any that you send. That's how a mailing list works.

Victoria,
I'm sorry I haven't gotten back to you sooner. I'm always behind in
answering email and yours slipped through the cracks.
We knew from family info that my Great Grandfather John Thomas Coe
(1864-1907) was born in Pennsylvania to Weston Coe and Sarah Wilson Coe
(later McDade).
Carl Coe helped identify Weston Coe as Sylvester Weston Coe and provided more
information on his ancestors. It is interesting to note that John T. Coe
named his one son Louis Sylvester Coe. Now we know why.
John Coe worked for the railroad in Pennsylvania, Chicago and finally in East
St. Louis, Illinois where he was killed in the railyards by a train in April
1907. He left a pregnant wife Mary and 7 children (3 boys, 4 girls, and the
girl born 6 months later). Most of the descendants of John Coe still live in
the St. Louis area. Other relatives moved to Ohio and Michigan.
If any of this line is of interest to you, please let me know and I can give
more information.
Chris
THURLEY: i was lucky enough to get an original copy but you can still get
copies from higginson, or the new england genealogical and historical society
and a few other places on the web. it was one of the first books i got and
one of the most helpful since my coe line is a very long one but does end
prior to their desc. coming to oregon in 1852.

THURLEY: the book goes just to him and he was still alive at the time of the
printing. does list his parents and all his sibs. shows three children in
the family and he was the middle child. it says:
EDWIN TRYON B. 18 JULY 1863, was a mechanic and in 1900 resided in
middlefield, ct.; present [1910] address not learned.
does appear that his parents were cousins of some sort since their last names
were both coe. amelia dency coe was the dau. of elias c. and hannah [tryon]
coe. sorry it doesn't go any further.
don't know if you have seen this book or not but it does take the coe/coo
name back into england to about 1340.

A TRIBUTE TO JUDGE HARRY LEE COE III
JUDGE HARRY LEE9 COE III (Harry Lee Jr.8, Harry Lee7, Jesse Franklin6, John
Jr.5, John4, Timothy3, Timothy2, Timothy1) was found shot to death near his
home in Tampa, FL, yesterday, July 13, 2000. The world is diminished by his
passing. Unfortunately, few people outside of Florida knew Harry.
Fortunately for Florida, few people inside the state did not.
Born February 13, 1932, in Brooklyn, NY, he graduated from the University
of Florida and Stetson University Law School. Afterward, he served two
years in the US military at Fort Jackson, SC. Listed in the University of
Florida Hall of Fame, he was an All Southeastern Conference baseball
pitcher and was later drafted by the Detroit Tigers. He played
professionally in the late 1950s before completing his law degree in 1962.
During 22 years on the bench as a Florida circuit court judge he developed
a reputation as a tough, no-nonsense jurist. He became known in Tampa as
Hanging Harry, the judge criminals didnt want to see. In 1992 he managed
to defeat two-term Republican incumbent Bill James for state attorney.
Sworn-in in 1993, almost immediately he prosecuted the case of two white
Florida men who set Christopher Wilson, a Black tourist, on fire and left
him for dead, which gained national attention. Legendary screen actor
Gregory Peck, who played forthright lawyer Atticus Finch who stands up to
racial prejudice in the 1962 film To Kill A Mockingbird, wrote to Harry on
September 8, 1993, praising him for his resolve and stating you have played
the role of Atticus Finch in real life, taken on the challenge and won an
important victory for all of us. In all, Hanging Harry sent more felons to
Florida state prison than any other state attorney. Active in the Boys Club
of Tampa and in various anti-drug programs, his death leaves a terrible
void in the lives of those who knew him and a sense of loss in those with
whom he came in contact.
Modest and unassuming, Harry told no one of his former life as a college
hall of famer or major league pitcher. His oldest son, Harry Lee Coe IV,
recently mentioned that he discovered that his father was in the University
of Florida Hall of Fame by stumbling across the plaque.
Harry came from good people. His grandfather Harry Lee Coe I, who was born
April 5, 1873, in Lebanon, TN, and was admitted to the Tennessee Bar in
1902, served as Lebanons first mayor. His father Harry Lee Coe Jr., who
was born February 15, 1909, in Lebanon, served as a combat engineer during
WW II and was later executive director of the Florida Department of
Revenue. His great grandfather Captain Jesse Franklin Coe, a prominent
merchant and city councilman in Lebanon, served as chief commissary agent
and general clerk of the commissary department of the Confederate
government during the Civil War.
Tampa police Major K.C. Newcomb often had cases brought before Coe when he
worked as a homicide detective and Coe was a judge. ``He was a friend of
the police,'' he said. ``You could count on him to have integrity.''
Newcomb said he recently was impressed with Coe's stamina and political
instincts.
Tampa News Channel 8 aired a special report Monday night on Coe after
promoting the story throughout the weekend during the network's coverage of
the Wimbledon tennis tournament. The Tampa Tribune and the St. Petersburg
Times followed with stories Tuesday, and the media ran other segments
through Wednesday when Harry disappeared.
The judge was found shot to death beneath an underpass near his apartment
by reporters from News Channel 8 on Thursday about noon.
John Feegel, the county's former medical examiner, said he would
investigate the death as a homicide. ``Regardless of the circumstances, I'd
wring this one dry to make sure there isn't somebody else involved,''
Feegel said.

Hi,
I am looking for information on Emeline E. Coe. She was born on June 13,
1818, possibly in Philadelphia. She died on February 7, 1872 and is buried
in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Philadelphia. Emeline married John McDowell born
1812 in NJ. John McDowell was adopted by his Aunt Henrietta Kollock and her
husband the Rev. John McDowell. His birth name was John McDowell Kollock,
but after his adoption he dropped of the Kollock and became known as just
John McDowell Jr.
John and Emeline had three children: Francis, Florence. and Ella.
I would greatly appreciate any information on Emeline and her family.
Thank You,
Melissa
