I have no further information on Mr. Coe.
Coldwater Republican, Coldwater, Branch Co., Michigan
24 July 1883
PIONEERS FESTIVAL IN 1859Hon. George A. Coe entertained the company by a
humorous, off-hand
speech, and in response to the vociferous call of the crowd, wound up
his remarks by singing the "Cork Leg" which brought down the house.
I would be very happy to post everything I have.
My great grandmother was Emily Ann Hoadley, both her first marriage
certificate and her death certificate state that she was born in Crawford
Co., Ohio, June 7, 1850, but 1900 census says she was born in June 1852.
Her mother (from death certificate) was Emma Coe (born PA) and her father
was James Hoadley (born Maryland from that 1900 census, but I don't trust
this for some reason!). Emily Ann first married George W. McKean in Berrien
Co. Michigan in 1868, second Samuel V. Baughman in or near Licking Co.,
Ohio, about 1881. After Sam died in 1904, she married a Francis Walker in
1911 in Zanesville, Ohio, but continued to appear in the Zanesville city
directory as Emily Baughman, and was shown on her death certificate as Emily
Baughman, widow. I haven't yet looked for a divorce from Walker in
Zanesville, but it probably exists.
I also know that she had 2 sons by McKean (varies: McKane, McCain, McCane)
Walter and John, Walter stayed around the Licking/Muskingum area, and John
"went west".
She also had 6 Baughman sons, Amos, Richard, Frank, Henry, Hiram Coe (my
grandfather), and Andrew J. Baughman, during the years 1883 - 1896
And that is all I know. Not much, huh? If an Emma Coe appears in someone's
sibling list, I will take that as a lead, and see where it goes. I have
searched census and census indexes in Ohio and Michigan looking for Emily
and George and James and Emma, to no avail. Not knowing if Emily Ann
Hoadley has any siblings, I have estimated that her mother Emma Coe may have
been born in the 1820's or 30's. Thanks for just keeping an eye open for
her. Carolyn Anderson Clark
CAROLYN: there are a number of hoadley's in the coe book and there is a
whole column in the index of emma's and emily's but none of them appear to be
right. this coe book was printed in 1911 so most of the people in there are
up to about 1900 and with some being a bit later. the book i have is an
original printing and is falling apart from use but it is complete. most all
the names i looked up were from n.y. and ct. i wish i could be of
assistance on this one since the coe name is one of my favorites and i have
done quite a lot of research on my line of coe's from 1300s england to
oregon. sorry and the best of luck on this one.

I am lurking, hoping that I may discover an Emma Coe in someone's family.
She may have been born in the time frame of 1820 or thereabouts! Carolyn

Hi Gary,
well Merriel figured out that somehow these supposed children of Sally
& John are actually her siblings! LOL, dont know how that happened. This
file came to me this way and it was confusing me to no end! Ok, 13
children... are they all listed by chance? I only have 4 children listed
for Simeon Coe and Betsey Ann Johnson.
Thanks!
John
Merriel,
Hmmm, now that sounds like a possibility! I got this file that way and just couldnt figure it out...it looked odd enough! I bet your right .

i would be happy to look for emma coe but need a little more info. like who
she married. if not her then her child that you descend from. who did this
one marry. it is difficult to look for just "emma coe" as there are so many
but if i have her married name i can look there. happy to help.

John,
Do you have any idea where these folks were? Where did you see the
info to indicate that the children's names are COE?

Phoebe,
Not sure where Sally Coe was from. I beleive her parents were: Simeon
Coe and Betsey Ann Johnson. My guess is that she was from Ct or NY.
This gets confusing as I have Coe's in both my birth family and adopted
family genealogies.
John
JOHN: they are: alexander,. betsey, sally, nancy, simeon, charilla,
harriet, avis, phebe, calvin, ambrose, andrew a., lorinda. first 4 are by
the first wife of simeon and the last 9 are children by his second wife, roxy
l. ellsworth. this line, which is not mine goes from sally to simeon to
andrew to john, to andrew, to john the immigrant. the book has 7 pages from
the immigrant to sally.

Hello Everyone,
Looking for information about Sally Coe b. Mar. 21,1793 and married
John Sweet. I have 3 children listed but all 3 have the surname of Coe
which makes me think that Sally may have been married before marrying
John Sweet and she may not have actually been a Coe. The children are:
Alexander Coe, Betsey Coe, Nancy Coe.
Thank you,
John
according to the coe book, simeon and betsey ann [johnson] were the parents
of 13 children of which sally was number 3 and it says she married john
sweet. this info is under misc. coes in the book and under the heading:
john coe of stamford, greenwich, and rye, and some of his descendants. this
john coe who was the immigrant for this family was born in england as early
as 1622.

John, did you perhaps get Sally's younger siblings somehow listed as her
children? Looks like the same names, Alexander, Betsey, and Nancy Coe which
I have listed as Sally Coe Sweet's younger brother and sisters all by Simeon
Coe's first wife....Merriel
Hi, I'm Chris Coey; this is the first message I've posted to this ng, and
I'm basically just looking for some background info on my last name. I've
received some conflicting information in the past--looking at my local
library has told me that the name is a derivative of Cowie, which is the
name of a town in both Scotland and Ireland, respectively. A couple of
online sources have suggested this as well, but several other linked it to
the Coe name, and that's why I'm on this mailing list. Anyone out there
with more information??
Chris Coey
