Yes. Steven Benton Coe married Mary King Rich in Grayson County Texas Dec.
24, 1885. He moved from Ohio to Texas as a teen-ager. I have also heard
that his brother (name not known) left Ohio with him and went as far as
Missouri, and they lost track of each other. I do not know whether their
parents accompanied them. In Texas, Steven got a job running the cotton
gin of Mary's father, Edward, and that is how he met Mary.

No Mark, I almost forgot I was subscribed to the list version until the
sudden onslaught. Thought it was nice that there finally was some action -
it used to be alot of other "sounds alike" surnames - I'm so glad that
rootsweb expanded their mailing lists so that this is just Coe now. If you
need any help on CA Coes that's where I am. Mine came from Desborough
Northhamptonshire England by way of PA in the 1870s.

Dear Colleen,
Forgive the intrusion - but I wanted to verify something and I picked your name
as an occasional contributor. As a [COE-L] "lurker", I have received 24
messages from [COE-L] since 7/14 (9:58 PM). This compares with ONE message
received from 5/7 to 7/13, FOUR messages received 5/1 to 5/26, and similar since
I subscribed 11/98.
I'm bewildered by the sudden post explosion. Is this common to you also, or is
there some sort of problem with my subscription?
I appreciate your time!

Hi Barbara,
If it's been awhile you probably weren't aware that there are now lots of
mailing lists and that there is one specifically for the COLES surname.
Visit this site to take a look at all the COLES resources available
http://resources.rootsweb.com/surnames/c/o/COLES/ - about half way down the
page is a link to joing the COLES mailing list.

Hello everyone. It has been a while since I checked in. I am still looking
for anyone with a Gilbert Coles in their background. I know he was my GGG
grandfather and would gladly share any information I have. He died in NYC,
NY in 1844. I don't know who was his father or mother. I can prove my line
right to him, then it has to stop. His wife was Elizabeth Bagley Coles
Parisian.
Any lead would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you all in advance.

i would imagine that some on this list already know this but today i found a
name that i would like pass along for anyone who descends from robert coe,
puritan. i have always known his mother's name was mary but i found that
her
last name appears to be vincent. her fathers name was andrew and he married
alice ????. andrew's father was nicholas. the family is from bildeston,
suffolk, england and the info that i have comes from two sources. suffolk
co. probate records and suffolk co. parish records. andrew vincent and
alice
had andrew; nicholas; alice; susanne; brigett; joan; mary; and elizabeth. i
have not checked the records set down by the author but he is very
respectable and until i or someone else checks these records i am happy with
what i found.
roberts father was henry coo/coe. his wife mary was bp. 13 jan. 1565/6; m.
21 sept. 1587 at bildeston. henry was buried 28 jan. 1630/1 and mary was
buried on 20 oct. 1631, both in boxford.
the name of the book where this is to be found is: "50 great migration
colonists to new england and their origins" by john brooks threlfall. book
dated 1990. this is a great book on these 50 and their families and some of
their ancestors.

Thank you for posting this information, which I did not have.
Kerry Stahl
The names of Mary Vincent and her father Andrew may also be found in a
brief item in The American Genealogist (I don't know the date of the issue,
but it was recent), page 197, entitled, "The Mother of Robert Coe".
However, it does not give Andrew's father or wife or other children, which
you have supplied. Thanks for the information. That article makes
reference to an article by John B. Threlfall's article in T.A.G. vol. 52,
pages 65-75 - the same author that you refer to.
Also - have you seen the book, "Record of the Coe Family and Descendants
from 1596 to 1856", by David Benton Coe, pub: Cincinatti: Standard Publ.
Co., 1885, 2nd ed.? (1st ed was published 1856; 2nd ed. adds a 7th
generation.) It gives a lot of data on the Coe family, especially in CT
and Ohio.

Hi everyone! I've belonged to the list for quite a while, but haven't yet
seen
references to "my" names - COEY aka COAY - Perhaps I am on the wrong
list - but just in case - here is what I have
Sabra E. COEY my gr-gr-grandmother was born October 6, 1830 (possibly VA,
probably OH), daughter of John COEY/COAY & Margaret HUTCHINSON who
were married in Dorchester, MD April 16, 1816. Does any of this sound
familiar
to anyone?
Thanks for listening!
Willi
Cathy,
John Jefferson Coe (John L.3, William2, Francis Peter1), son of John
L. and Mary Ann (McCollum) Coe, was born March 24, 1852, in Smyth
County, VA. He was reported as a student barber at Harpers Ferry, WV, in
1880. A resident of Mercer County, WV, in 1900, by 1906 he had moved to
Richlands, Tazewell County, VA, where on August 20 he purchased property.
On August 1, 1907, he bought five additional properties -- lots 10 through
14 -- in the town from W.E. and Mary B. Spratt for $250. Located on the
west side of Suffolk Avenue, the properties were evidently purchased as an
investment. He had trouble collecting on his holdings, and over the
course of the next six years he filed suit against several local
residents, winning each one with judgments of from $38.75 to $63. He
appears in Tazewell County in the census of 1910. Missing his left leg,
descendants report that he lost it during the Civil War. He died
December 2, 1921, and was buried at Hankins Cemetery, Richlands.
He married December 21, 1875, in Smyth County, VA, Martha E.
Boyd, born October 22, 1853, in VA, died July 12, 1923, at Richlands,
VA, daughter of A.J. and Margaret Boyd.
Children (b. in Smyth County, VA):
1. William Luther, b. Nov. 3, 1876.
2. Nellie, b. Sept. 13, 1878.
3. Charles B., b. Oct. 13, 1880.
4. David Daniel, b. July 2, 1882.
5. Noah Allen, b. May 19, 1884.
6. Enis Bishop, b. March 26, 1886.
7. Benjamin S., b. May 11, 1889.
I trust that this information will be of some value to you. If you would
like to share additional material, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Carl,
I had not asked you for more information because I didn't want to impose.
But it seems that you are the man with all the answers! Would you please
send me any additional information that you might have on John L.(3), William
2 , and Francis Peter? We cant wait to buy your book. You do such an in-depth
history. We could not come close! Thank you so much, Cathy
Does anyone know if Coe and Cough are the same surname. I am looking for a
Susan Coe (at least I think this is the correct spelling), who lived in
Franklin Township, Bergen County, NJ during the 1860's - 1880's. She took
care of my great-grandmother after her grandmother passed away.
Any information would be appreciated.
Regards,
Jean
Gary thank you for that information.

Thanks. I was responding to someone else who was searching for John
Jefferson Coe, and she replied that he was from VA or West VA.
But I am searching for parents of Steven Benton Coe, born 25 March 1859 at
Mansfield Ohio and died in Texas in 1905. Because of the Benton name, I
suspect that he was descended from James Coe who married Rachel Benton in
Mass and moved to Ohio. Maybe I am connected with you.

Letting everyone know that I enjoy reading and learning more about the
COEs. I never knew that I had a COE lineage until a relative sent me
some information that was included in a family bible.
Seems the last COE in my lineage is my g g grandmother Maria Fontana
COE, b. 1848, in Sandusky, Ohio. I don't know when she died. (She was
the d/o Samuel D. COE, b. Jun 1808, New Paltz, Ulster, NY, d. abt 1889,
place unknown. Samuel D. COE m. Lydia HAMLIN, no other marriage or info
abt. Lydia) Maria F. COE m. my g g grandfather John Asa SPALDING (b.
1836, Alden, Erie, NY, d. 1891, Galesburg, Knox, IL).I don't have
information about their marriagge, but do know they had atlesat a
daughter, Jennie M. SPALDING) b. 1874, either Galesburg, Knox, IL or
Clinton County, MO)
>From some of the limited info that I have and thru various online
sights I was able to trace the line back to at least John COE, (b.
1625,Eng, d. 1693, Stratford, Fairfield, CT)) Who was one of Robert
COE's (b. 1596, England, d. 1659) Still don't have information if it's
Mary who is John's mother.
Well even though my COEs are a bit removed, I just wanted to let you all
know I'm interested in hearing about other COEs as well.
Happy hunting!
