Gene,
Thank you for the Humphrey information.
My information on John G. Humphrey and his family came from his great
grandson John Edwin Coe, b. Oct. 15, 1882, at Galva, KS, d. April 21, 1961,
in Chicago, IL, son of Joshua Humphrey and Clara (Severtson) Coe of
McPherson, KS. Joshua Humphrey Coe, b. Dec. 12, 1852, at Dunlapsville, IN,
was a son of John William and Mary (Humphrey) Coe of Franklin County, IN.
Mary Humphrey, of course, was John G. Humphey's daughter.
I have never researched the Humphrey family. Since John Edwin Coe was a
grandson, I accepted his information as acurate. It appears that you have
done some commendable research which would indicate that the John G.
Humphrey you are following was married to Jane Herron.
I am confused as to why Mary would be referred to as Mary Huested in John
G. Humphrey's will. John William Coe died Sept. 23, 1899, at New Boston,
IL. Mary died Jan. 30, 1898. Both are buried at New Boston.
In looking through John Edwin's notes, I see he mentioned a great aunt
Martha Jane Humphrey who married Joshua Higdon and lived at Clarksburg, IN,
where she died at age 90. He also stated that John Gibson Humphrey was
born in 1756 in Loudoun County, VA, and died Feb. 23, 1828, in Franklin
County, IN. He went on to state that there were three brothers born in
Loudoun County: John Gibson Jr, Joseph, and Joshua, b. 1793, m. Elizabeth
Slack. In some penciled notes he mentioned that John Gibson Humphrey was
married to Pamela Raton. He also states John Gibson Humphrey was a son of
Joshua and Serba (Williams) Humphrey.
He is relatively silent on Mary E. (Humphrey) Coe's mother, simply calling
her Mary E. Humphrey, d. 1834 in Franklin County, IN. He states that John
Gibson Humphrey was buried at Bath, IN, and Mary E. Humphrey was buried at
Old Franklin Churchyard. He states that John Gibson Humphrey Jr was
married to Jane Herron.
He lists the children of John Gibson and Mary E. Humphrey as follows:
1. John Gibson Jr.
2. Mary E., b. April 3, 1816; m. John William Coe.
3. Martha Jane, m. Joshua Rigdon.
4. Harriet, m. Andy Rigor. (daughter Mary raised in Coe home with John
Edwin's father).
5. Amy, m. ________ Demaree.
6. Hannah, m. Wm Boling.
John Edwin could, of course, be wrong. The information was apparently from
family members. I see no sources cited in any of his notes.
He does mention that Robert and Mary Herron of Loudoun County, VA, had a
daughter Jane (May 20, 1787-Aug. 25, 1844) who married John Gibson
Humphrey, Jr. He also states John Gibson Jr and Jane (Herron) Humphrey had
a daughter Mary Humphrey, b. 1815, d. 1837. This Herron family also moved
to Franklin County, IN. Robert and Mary Herron were the parents of
Elizabeth Herron (May 6, 1781-April 16, 1854) who married Samuel Coe, b.
March 5, 1786, John William Coe's father.
Sorry I could not be of more help. As mentioned, I've not pursued anything
on the Humphrey family.
Let me know if you are able to sort out any of this.

Hello folks---
The new COLE list is up and running, and we now have our new
list ownership in place for the remaining COE list.
As you can see, my name is Joyce Cummings, and I am the new
list owner for the COE remainder of the old list. We also
have a new co-owner and her name is Tanjla Vasquez. I am
going to ask her to introduce herself. We hope that by having
two of us, we will be able to cover anything that may require
attention in a timely fashion.
We are not big on rules, so we haven't changed very much.
We feel that people who use the list can moderate their own
messages and be courteous and helpful with each other. The
one thing that did seem necessary was to close posting to
subscribers only, because of the problems with spam.
One of the other things I like to see is to make most of your
responses to the list rather than to the individuals who posted
the question. The traffic here is relatively light, and many
members can benefit from the answers that are provided to other
queries. So, unless your message is really personal or you are
placing a look up request to some who has volunteered, do post
it to the list. For any of you who offer to do look ups, please
post the results to the list so that all can benefit. The lists
that work the best are those that develop a real community spirit.
I hope we will grow into that atmosphere.
I am a descendant of William COE and Jane MILSTEAD(?) of
Fairfax County, Virginia. I have probably met quite a number
of you all ready on individual research quests. I want to
take this opportunity to thank Carl Robert Coe for his very
helpful responses to so many of the queries on the list.
We certainly all appreciate your help, Carl, and I don't
know what we would do without you! I do hope you'll keep
up the good work.
If any of you who are still subscribed to this list really have
interests pertaining only to COLE, you may wish to unsubscribe from
the COE list and subscribe to the COLE list. The instructions

Gene,
Samuel Coe's wife, Elizabeth Herron, who he married August 2, 1806, in
Loudoun County, VA, was born May 6, 1781, died April 16, 1854, in Franklin
County, IN, daughter of Robert and Mary Herron. Her mother, an Irish
immigrant, accompanied the family to Franklin County.
I know of no connection between the Herron family of Loudoun County, VA,
and John G. and Mary Humphrey of Franklin County, IN. That is not to say
that there could not be one. I have no information.
Samuel and Elizabeth (Herron) Coe's children were (1-5 b. in Loudoun Co.,
VA):
1. Amanda, b. Aug. 19, 1807.
2. Nancy, b. April 7, 1808.
3. Jane, b. Nov. 5, 1809.
4. Cynthia, b. June 18, 1811.
5. Burr, b. Sept. 23, 1813.
6. William, b. Dec. 15, 1815.
7. John, b. May 12, 1817.
8. Robert, b. Aug. 15, 1820.
9. Mary Elizabeth, b. Jan. 17, 1822.
I hope this is helpful.
Carl Robert Coe
Winona,
Thomas Coe served with the Trans-Mississippi Department of the Confederate
Army. He is not listed with Arkansas recruits. I'm not sure if his name was
misrecorded as Cox or Cole, as often happened, or if he was assigned to the
Confederate government rather than an individual state. His cousin Jesse
Franklin Coe from Wilson County served as chief commissary agent and
general clerk of the commissary department of the Confederate government,
but I also find him listed as a captain of Company B, 45th Tennessee
Infantry.
Thomas' mother was Patsey Rather, daughter of James and Elizabeth (Rowton)
Rather. His mother and father, Isaiah Coe, were married August 1, 1811,
in Wilson County, TN.
There children were (b. in Wilson County, TN):
1. Eliza, m. Aug. 29, 1831, William Compton.
2. James Rather, b. Feb. 8, 1818; sgt. Company I, 19th Reg., Tennessee
Infantry.
3. Elizabeth, b. Oct. 29, 1820; m. April 26, 1838, Wm Thompson Moxley.
4. Martha, m. April 6, 1842, Barton L. Green.
5. THOMAS JEFFERSON, b. 1827.
6 . Rhoda, m. Sept. 13, 1851, William Compton.
7. Tabitha C., m. July 6, 1856, Dr. F.A. Dunn (married at Thomas Coe's
home in Independence County, AR).
8. Andrew Jackson, killed June 27, 1862, at the Battle of Mechanicsville.
(Co. D, 7th Reg., TN Inf.)
9. Martin Van Buren, d. Sept. 25, 1861, at Huntersville, VA. (Co. A, 7th
Reg., TN Inf.)
10. Francis M., d. May 20, 1863, in the Union prison at Alton, IL. (Co. C,
4th Reg., TN Cav.)
11. Julia F., m. Sept.24, 1866, Allen S. Ward.
I hope this is helpful.

Pam,
Great to hear from you again. It's been some time.
Jacob Coe, second son of Pearson and Sytha (Ballinger) Coe, was born in
1820 in Cumberland County, KY. Pearson Coe, who was born in 1766 in
Loudoun County, VA, was a son of Francis Peter and Nancy Coe. Sytha
Ballinger was Pearson's second wife. He was married first May 1, 1795, in
Pittsylvania County, VA, to Jane Flowers. By her he was the father of
several children, including John C., b. 1797, Eleanor, b.Oct. 20, 1805,
Katherine, Jane, and Violetta. By Sytha Ballinger, besides Jacob, he was
the father of Benjamin B., b. July 14, 1819, Elijah, b. 1822, Pearson Jr,
b. Jan. 1, 1825, and Cynthia Ann, b. 1834.
In 1847 Jacob Coe was deeded a 162-acre farm on Crocus Creek in Russell
County, KY. He sold land in Russell County in 1853 to J.G. Clapton and may
have gone to Shelby County, IL, with his brothers Benjamin and Pearson. He
was dead by 1867.
He married June 5, 1849, in Russell County, KY, Louisa Polly McGlosson, b.
1829 in KY. She married (2) Oct. 27, 1867, in Shelby County, IL, Hiram
Webster. She is listed in the Jamestown District of Russell County, KY, in
the 1870 census.
Their children were:
1. Veleta J., b. 1850.
2. Elizabeth, b. March 5, 1852.
3. Frederick R., b. 1858.
4. Samuel, b. 1862.
5. Sythe, b. 1863.
6. Jacob W., b. 1865.
I understand your frustration at not being able to find additional
information on Robert Coe. Did you say you had a photo of him and a John
Coe from Russell County, KY? Are there any other clues that might help
identify his parent family?
I'll be happy to do what I can to help you in your search.

An article dated June 6, 1907 in the Shoreline Times Newspaper:
Miss Harriet Coe has been visiting in Newark, N.J. for the past week, the
guest of Miss Annie Oakley, the celebrated champion rifle shot of seventeen
countries. She accompanied Miss Oakley at her great exhibition given Memorial
day at the Gun and Country Club at Paterson, N.J., afterward attending the
"Red Mill" performance at the Knickerbocker Theatre, New York. While away
Miss Coe was also entertained by Mr. and Mrs. Stone, of Montgomery & Stone, of
"Wizard of Ozz" fame, and Miss Maude Adams at her Roanoke home.
Hope someone finds this interesting.

Well thank you I picked up his middle name and was able to place him in a
family now.
But below You have John G. Humphrey married to Mary???? Is that a typo???
I believe his first wife was Jane Herron Probably either a sister or a
cousin to Elizabeth Herron Coe???? John G. second wife was Sarah Boling
-------- as she had been married before and had a daughter when he married
her and they had at least one son after this marriage. Benjamin...
I have some Herrin research that I have picked up along the way but have
never really worked it out very well.
I would like if you have any of Samuel Coe and Elizabeths siblings I have
only one Daughter listed Amanda Coe 19 Aug 1807 Loudoun county Va m: Samuel
Scott 3 oct 1835 b: 8 may 1802 KY son William no dates

Vonda,
You may be referring to Wesley Allen Coe, b. April 17, 1859, in Bradley
County, TN, son of Stephen Columbus and Martha (Southerland) Coe. He was
mistakenly recorded as "William" A. Coe, age 21, in the 1880 Bradley County
census (Vol 2, 47:7). Listed on the same page is Allen M. Coe, b. 1842,
son of Wesley Allen and Rebecca (Ellison) Coe.
The Casey information came from many sources, collected over many years.
Some came from Harold Helm, who used to administer the COE-L(a)rootsweb.com
list. Some came from Harold and Robert Casey, "Casey Family History,"
1980. Since the Coe girls, Martha and Elizabeth, married Caseys, I listed
cursory information on their families. I have concentrated on the Coes.
If you should discover anything in your Tennessee census search on George
and Nancy (Coe) Dugan, I would be extremely interested. I understand they
lived in McMinn County.
I received my copy of the "The Encyclopedia of Tennessee History and
Culture" today--just published. There are sections on both General Levin
Coe, Speaker of the Tennessee State Senate and 1848 Vice Presidential
nominee; and Frederick H. Coe, native Tennessean and leading television
producer and director during the 1950s. I could not find any Caseys listed.
I'm not sure I've talked with you since my article on General Coe appeared
in the "Tennessee Historical Quarterly." Titled "Politics and
Assassination: The Story of General Levin Hudson Coe," it was published in
the Spring 1995 issue. I'm sure the library there in Huntsville has copies
should you be interested.

No, I figured out the William A. It is the William Coe age 50 listed directly
after William A. that has me stumped. He has wife Elizabeth and children John
S. 13, Joseph S. 7 and Eva M. 6 mo. I just noticed that this William is not
listed in the index to the Tennessee 1880 census (book form). Perhaps I
misread it but it certainly looked like Coe to me. Will check it again
tomorrow. Will also check the Tennessee Historical Quarterly for your article
and will let you know if I find anything on George and Nancy Dugan.
I sent you a family group sheet on Jesse E. Casey in 1994 and mentioned at the
time that he did not have a son Morgan. He still doesn't :-)

Pam,
If the photos you have are of John F. Coe, b. May 2, 1881, in Russell
County, KY, and his brother Marcellius R. Coe, b. May 1866, then I think
there is little question that your Robert Pearson Coe and the
Roberson/Robert Coe I have listed as born in 1865 and married March 12,
1891, in Russell County, to Myrtle Cook, b. 1875, are the same person.
These boys, along with their siblings Eliza T., b. 1863, Marcus L., b.
1872, Timothy Thomas, b. June 14, 1870, Almerine L., b. 1872, Ida Lou, b.
May 6, 1874, Samuel, b. 1879, and James Elmer, b. Feb. 5, 1884, were
children of Samuel W. and Sarah Louisa (Shelton) of Wayne and Russell
Counties, KY. Samuel W. Coe, b. Sept. 1833 in Wayne County, was a son of
Samuel and Elvira (Davis) Coe of Wayne County. Samuel, b. 1793 in Georgia,
was a son Joshua and Rachel (Paul) Coe of Caswell County, NC, and Wilkes
County, GA.
Samuel Coe first appears on record in Wayne County, KY, Oct. 11, 1818, when
he, his sister Elizabeth Coe, Elisha Franklin and Nancy Kiggins are listed
as heirs of Rachel Coe. Elizabeth married John Morrow July 14, 1822, in
Wayne County. Samuel married Elvira Davis there May 11, 1826. Joshua Coe
married Rachel Paul Oct. 26, 1784, in Caswell County, NC.
Would you be so kind as to update me on Robert Pearson Coe and his second
marriage? I believe you mentioned that he died in San Fransisco.
Is there anything further with which I can be of assistance?
Carl Robert Coe
Pam,
Great to hear from you again.
Carl Robert Coe
Not much his wife was born in Mercer Co, MO. I found them together in Caddo
Co, Oklahoma in 1920, there first child was born in 1903 in Oklahoma, I
checked Noble county because you had said there was a lloyd Coe who was in
Noble co.. In the 1920 census there were 2 Robert Coes. I have sent for a
death cert for Corintha (Tina) Michael Coe but none was found, I check in
Mercer co, MO for a marriage there also,. LIke I said before when I checked
for 1880 census in Kentucky the only match I found was for a Roberson Coe,
born 3-1865, which my Robert was born 3-18-1865. Which listed his parents as
Samuel W Coe, and Louisa Shelton, now this lady in chicago, did say that her
grandmother recognized the picture and did say the brother Robert or BOB was
in Oklahomha. Thats all I have the death cert for Robert lists parents
unknown.
Cindy,
Always great to hear from you!
Brenda is the granddaughter of Francis Marion and Katherine (Goodrum) Coe.
Francis Marion Coe, b. March 11, 1858, in MS, was Isaac Monroe Coe's
youngest son.
If you talk with Mary Lou let her know that I've found considerable
information on William A. Coe's oldest son Ransom. According to his
pension applications he was born in 1830 in Benton County, AL, which would
make an additional area where William was located that year. As you know,
he's listed in the 1830 censuses of both Pickens County, AL, and Gadsden
County, FL. Ransom died destitute in 1906 at his 40-acre farm at Coushatta,
LA. There were only four children that lived to adulthood: George
Washington, Josephine, William A., and Ransom Nathaniel.

Brenda,
Yes I do have some information on your grandparents. I have Ernest Coe's
birthdate as January 22, 1887. She and Columbus Brinkley were married
October 20, 1909, and lived at Colorado City, TX. I do not, however, have
anything on their children. If it wouldn't be too much trouble, would you
be willing to share what you have on them? Names and birthdates would be
sufficient.
According to doucments drawn up in the 1890s by St. Louis, MO, attorney
Samuel Blair, Isaac Coe's father was one George W. Coe. Not much is known
of him other than the fact he was supposed to have been an extensive
landowner. In 1895 Heny Blackburn, who had hired Blair to negotiate for
him, offered Isaac Coe's heirs $108,000,000 for their interest in land
known as "the King George Patent of 1714."
The location of the purported land is unknown. Isaac Coe shows up in the
early 1800s in Georgia, Mississippi and Florida.
Hope this is helpful. Anything you can add on Ernest's children would be
appreciated.
