I am searching for the parents of my ggf James W. Cole b: Apr 9, 1834 d: Jun
23, 1908. James was married to Edna Ann and they had five children who
survived beyond infancy; Eliot, Margaret(my grandmother), Margian, Ella and
William. James and Edna Ann were buried in the Mullis family cemetery outside
of Cochran Georgia. I found James and Edna Ann in the 1870 and 1900 Dodge
County Ga census reports and in Twiggs County Ga in the 1880 census report. I
believe that James must have lived in Tennessee when he was a youth because he
enlisted in the 37th Regiment of Stewart's Brigade of the Tennessee
Volunteers. He attained the rank of sergeant and was shot through the shoulder
at the Battle of Chickamauga in North Georgia. The wound permanently disabled
his arm and he received a fifty dollar a year pension.
I found a Henry Cole listed in the 1850 Lincoln County Tennessee Census who
was married to Rebecca. Henry and Rebecca had a son named James W. who was
the correct age for my James. I cannot verify that this is my James. Henry
and Rebecca were listed in the 1860 Giles Coutny Census and a James was
listed in the the 1850 Haywood census married to Indy.
Thanks for any help you can offer

I am Sylvia Cole Brown and am new to this mailing list.
As a brief introduction, my great grandfather was P.W. COLE. (I do not
know if his name was Philip William or Patrick William). He was born
1834 in Canada and came to the U.S. sometime between 1857 and 1871. His
parents are unknown but supposedly, his father was born England and his
mother born Ireland.
P.W. Cole's siblings *may* have been: Matthew b. 1838, Thomas b. 1841,
Catharine, Mary Ann, and Kingston b. 1857.
P.W. Cole married Mary Ann Weaver in TN in 1871. From TN, he was in KY
for a brief time and then removed to Alabama where he remained until his
death in 1910. He worked for the railroad and presumably his moves from
state to state were because of his job.
P.W. and Mary Ann Cole had 6 children: Catherine Ann b. 1872, Robert
Thomas b. 1873, Mary Ellen b. 1875, Willie F. b. 1888, George William b.
1889, and Max b. 1892.

Hello Carpenter Researchers:
Where are you?? I have been looking for you folks and nobody responds. Are
you not there or do you have all the information you need?
I have abstracted Or. Co. Deeds vol a-g (17th and 18th century) and the Or Co.
mortgages for all Carpenters I could read (Vol C very poor condition, very
difficult to find all) and would be happy to share with you any that you might
find helpful.
I have seen both Seversmith LI re. Carpenters and also first few chapters of
Soloman Carpenter book, as well as the classic Or. Co. History books, NY wills
CD, Or. Wills books, Ul Co. wills book, and the Source Documents of LI, as
well as AB Carpenter.
My personal mission is to try to determine the validity of AB Carpenter's John
of LI lines, particularly John who was reportedly married to Ruth Coe (cannot
find this source) of Jamaica.
My ancestor is Moses Carpenter who married 1. Elizabeth Runyon about 1774 and
2nd. Hannah Smith, dau of Henry. According to A.B. Carpenter there was
correspondence between John and Isaac re. regarding their niece, Joanne
marriage in Onondaga Co. Moses did have a dau. Joanne and he did move to
Onondaga Co., as did his son in law, James Wisner, also of Or Co and the
husband of Elizabeth (Runyon) Carpenter, my line.
Will do lookups for these Carpenters.

Hello,
Would somebody explain to me if the names Coe and Cole are for the same family
(ies) at some point in history. I have seen the various early spellings of
Coe as Coo and Koo or Koe, but have never before seen (or recognized the name
as Cole).
As I have been searching for the RUTH COE reported to have married JOHN
CARPENTER, Jamaica, LI, NY, and have never, ever seen any other reference to
her other than on the LDS IGI (a film that LDS will NOT release) am most
interested to know if I ought to be searching for a RUTH COLE also.
As the name, COLE, figures prominately in the Orange Co., NY records where my
MOSES CARPENTER (reported son of John and Ruth) is first documented, insight
into this question would be a great value to my research.
Before I read too much into the question, perhaps someone can tell me if the
list carries both names just because of the similar spelling, and not because
they may be the same family.
Thank you for the assistance.

I am looking for any information on Isom COLE b. abt. 1790. He is
buried in Attala County MS but probably was born in either NC or TN
(uncertain when he went to MS). He had two sons by a second wife that
went to TX when Isom died. One was Isom, Jr. and the other Dan F. The
mother was Jane Ware of TX. I understand Isom, Sr., is on CD 312
and the MS Census of 1800 (unverified). Please let me know if you have
anything on this family. Thank you. Margaret Cole Perkins

My database doesn't include a John Henry COLE born in 1850, but my
GGGGgrandfather was named John Henry COLE and the name was definitely
passed down. We have at least one unaccounted for grandson named John H.
COLE -- born in Obion Co. TN in 1842, and his mother was from AL so there
seem to have been ties there. One of his brothers stayed in Obion Co. and
another went to O.T. Other siblings..... Well, I have only their
names......

Dear Coe Researchers,
According to the A.B. Carpenter book, Wm of Rehoboth, Ruth Coe of Jamaica
married in 1735 John Carpenter, also of Jamaica.
Pg. 61and 81/2 indicate that John Carpenter, b 1685 (Jamaica) m. Ruth Coe and
moved to Goshen, OR Co, NY. Ch listed were Ruth m. Ephraim Marston and Peter
Stagg; Daniel m Susan Thomspon, Increase m Jane (book states that Increase was
exec. of "his father's will", 15 years prior to the birth of his father's
other listed ch!!), b. 1747 m Susanna Little, Temperance m Jeremiah Curtis,
John ba 1730 or 1745 m Frinces 2nd Abigail Moore, Benjamin m Eunice Stewart,
Moses m Hannah Smith (he first m. Elizabeth Runyon 1774), Susanna m a Howell.
There are obvious errors in the book (i.e. Increase above exec. of his fa.
will before birth of John, Moses, etc.) so at the very least, he telescoped
two generations into one.
Other information (old query out of WI indicates that this Ruth Coe m Joseph
Carpenter).
Does anyone have information re. this Ruth Coe? There is enough information
in the Jamaica records (Vol I and II) to indicate that Benjamin Coe and Joseph
Carpenter were bus partiner in a mill, and the land descriptions certainly
indicate close proximity of the Coe and Carpenter families.
The book further states that after John Carpenter died Ruth (Coe) Carpenter
remarried a Mr. Thurston and "probably kept the records of the family."
Certainly Coes, Carpenters, and even a Thurston all went to Orange Co. I
cannot find any information to validate that this Ruth Coe even existed, let
alone that she m. either a John or a Joseph Carpenter and m. 2nd a Mr.
Thurston.
I have seen the Coe book and have seen the associations with the name
Whitehead and also Higby. (Moses Higby did have land in Goshen also).
Any insight into this question would be greatly appreciated. We have been
researching this for many, many years.
Incidently, my line goes thru Moses, above, and his first w. Elizabeth
Runyon, dau of Richard Runyon (also of Morris Co. as is the Ruth Coe who m.
Nichols (wasit?). Their daughter Elizabeth Runyon Carpenter m. James, son of
John Wisner, Jr. of Or. Co.
Thank you,
Phoebe in CA
