Ok, I know I posted on this awhile back, but I have recently come into some new information. My great grandmother Jennie Cody also went by Genevieve was married to my great grandfather Omer Bourgouin. It is said that we are related to Buffalo Bill, cousins or something. Her fathers name was Leo Cote. She changed the spelling to Cody. She never really talked about our ancestors, she kept really quiet about it even if it was brought up. Any information would be great! I can also be reached by email babydjs2005@hotmail.com....THANK YOU!!

I'm trying to find out where my family originated from. I have traced it back to Thomas Cody (with a lot of help, thank you!). Thomas married Sarah Cody, not sure when. I believe they are both from North Carolina. I'm trying to find Thomas' parents. This is all the info I have, just to compare notes and make sure we are talking about the same Cody's. I hope this isn't too confusing lol.
My Father is Andrew b 1961 to Jess(e) Ezra Cody and Phyllis Geraldine Houk-Cody. Jess(e) b.1926 to Jess and Viola Cody in Indiana. Jess was born in Kentucky to William W. and Lucy (i think)Cody in 1888(?). William W. Cody was born in Tennessee in March of 1856 to Thomas and Sarah Cody. Thomas was born in 1822 (?) in North Carolina. I think he may have been a miner but I'm not 100% on that. This is where I have been stuck for a while. I'm trying to Find Thomas' parents. PLEASE if you have any information please let me know! It will be greatly appreciated!! Thank you!
P.S. Is it just me or does it seem like the Cody's are hard to find? :D

I am looking for birth and family records of my great-great-grandfather, Henry Hastaken CODY, born circ 1809 in County Cork, Ireland. Occupation, Farm Laborer. On 3 January 1848 he was tried and convicted in Cork for stealing some barley and sentanced to seven (7) years. He was sent to Tasmania, Australia on the ship Blenheim II on 1 November 1848. He was 39 years old at the time. Religion was Roman Catholic. This is from his convict record in our family possession.
He was tried with a fellow conspiritor, one Jerimiah QUINN, aged 32, who was also sent to Tasmania on the same ship.
If anyone has information on Henry CODY or can assist me with this search please contact me by email and by this site. My email address is jwunsch300(a)msn.com
Thank you,
John Wunsch

Dolly Montz's grandfather and "Buffalo Bill" indeed were not only related, but actually were third cousins. (That made Dolly a "third cousin twice removed".)
Dolly married at Ellensburg, Washington - and had 4 children. Therefore, that definitely makes you a "third cousin five times removed".

It's uncanny that, in fact, your Mary died exactly 71 years ago yesterday - the very date that you posted this query on Feb 21, 2011. Nothing more than an odd coincidence, but worth noting! :)
Yes, she passed on Feb 21, 1930, St. Louis. Her father was Timothy Cody who was born in England and her mother was Ann Daly born in Ireland. However, this Cody family was definitely not related to Buffalo Bill Cody by the Cody surname, since they (your Cody family) actually immigrated to the USA centuries later than BB's family (who few realize did not even have the original spelling of Cody!) - who has long been proven to have already been settled here in the USA in the 1600's.
We're glad that you asked! Else how would you know? No fault implied, with the common surname frequently getting rather confused! Consider, too, that the verbal traditions also erroneously get mixed a bit along the years..... and it's easy to see how it happens all the time.
Sad that Emil died a full 23 years later in the same exact same month of February. (He died Feb 16, 1953 and was born 11 Oct 1877.) Both are buried in Mt. Olive Cemetery in St. Louis.
In summary, to explain: Cody families that arrived in this country in the 1700's, 1800's and 1900's simply were not possibly of the same direct family lines of BB's via a connection of the Cody surname.

My paternal grandmother was Mary "Molly" Cody and I was always told we were distantly related to Buffalo Bill. She passed away when my father was only 8 years old, which would have been 1928. She was married to Emil Schrappen who was a police officer in St. Louis and a guard at the World's Fair in 1904. How can I find out if there was a family relationship?
Thanks.

This is in reference to the 2nd marriage of Edward F Cody.
This was to Caroline McGrew (maiden name was Ritzius) on April 23, 1909. She died June 6,1929 in Fulton Co, Indiana. Caroline was my great-grandmother and none of the family ever knew anything about Edward Cody & this marriage - just that they were, or had been, married. Sounds like the situation may be the same with the Cody family. I'm wondering if there is a story here.
Caroline & James McGrew (he died in 1899) had 4 children; Rosetta M; Christopher C; Mary M (my grandmother); and Dora B.

I know that Ziba Cody's Line has not been traced and in the last Cody Family Association Newsletter they requested any info on Ziba Cody's family. They could not locate any living descendant of Ziba's. So this would be great news if your husband is a descendant of Ziba's.

Everything I have ever seen notes Cody as an Irish name, It's pronuciation is also Irish. With marriage someone could have come from England with that name.
