There are several excellent Cody websites that are genealogy related, that
may be helpful to the forum participants here. Depends on which "Cody"
family, however. Maybe others could share their finds also and then be able to
help others in their research. There's the Mass. Cody family, at least one
"Southern Colonial Cody Family", the Irish Cody families.... off hand,
cannot recall which others?
In the spirit of community, Cody websites would be really good to share!
The "Buffalo Bill" lines have a couple of websites, one is pertaining to
the museum and that was mentioned here recently. Another good resource is
_http://cody-family.org/_ (http://cody-family.org/) and that has plenty of
things to click on and check out, right down to naming many of those early
ancestors as well as many of the descendants of Philip and Martha.
However, when we read your forum entry...... still remain
curious........wondering what website would that be? Who is Bill Pickett? Is he a Cody
ancestor? From which Cody lines? Any hints as to: dates, location(s), etc. ? Do
you have all you need? Anything we can do to help or share, exchange
information?

There has been considerable work done on this Cody family who is descended from Pierce Cody - and whose family lines moved southward into North Carolina, with many who eventually migrated westward. Austin was "Austin Harmon" who is a great grandson of Pierce and his wife Mary Davis.
The history of Rowan County and Davidson County in NC should have information on these specific families.
Pierce's grandfather is said to have originated in Cornwall, England. Nevertheless, it has been long proven that none of these folks are related to the "Buffalo Bill" Cody family.
And right you are in speculating that it's not uncommon for the 'verbal traditions' of being related to 'somebody famous', solely by the 'same last name'....which often proves to be untrue - although that certainly doesn't mean there is yet another rich heritage to explore - and plenty of fine and interesting folks in that CODY family, albeit not "Buffalo Bill", as well!
Likely there are many others here or on other forums (genforum is another with avid Cody researchers, many of the NC lines) who may better assist with those specific NC Cody families, re Pierce Cody and all the other relations. Best of continued hunting, for you indeed are a wonderful parent to keep on digging! :)

Like many others, my children's grandmother always told the family they were related to Buffalo Bill. I am attempting to verify. Here's what I know:
Harold Lloyd Cody (went by the name Harry), b. 23 Feb 1901 Burwell, NE, m. Edith D. Sauerbier bef 1922 in Flathead County, MT, d. 05 Apr 1948 Los Angeles. His father was James H. Cody, mother was Anna Alice Jones. Grandfather was Austin Cody.
Thank you,

I found the obit very interesting also. Especially the part about the purple and white lined grave. My husband was a direct descendant of Eliza thrugh her and George's son Harry Elsworth Myers. So, B. Bill was an uncle.

French as well. The Cody family line that started in Boston came over from France in the mid 1600s. This line includes Buffalo Bill and it is not Irish or English. The name at least for us had several published variations - Goady, LeCoadie, LeCody and was changed apparently to become Americanized.Hope that helps.

I have all kinds of references that might help you. For starters take a look at http://cody-family.org/ and look in genealogy. Some of the publications can still be found - Ebay and such. Also the Buffalo Bill Historical Society is a great resource - bbhc.org. LAst the family has a historian who can be reached at genealogist(a)cody-family.org. Her name is Barbara Metalsky. If your are correct she will be able to find your lineage identification in her resources and get you what ever you want. That should get you started. My name is William F. Cody Jr. (Bill). I can be reached personally at bill(a)williamcody.com

Interesting message. I am a recent subscriber to this list and service. As most due we are digging deeper into Cody lineage as we age. My great, great, great grandfather Phillip Cody was Buffalo Bill's and hence Eliza's uncle. My Dad is William F. Cody, I am William F. Cody Jr. and my son, two months old is William F. Cody III (Will). So we have another William down our line of the family. Interestingly as BBill had 4 sisters so does our Will (WFC III) - Vanessa, Allie, Blake and Sara. We hope they all become pioneers in their own right like the Obit suggests. Thanks - Bill

A Pioneer Gone.
Mrs. Eliza Cody MYERS departed this life on February 3, 1902, after an illness of six months, during which time she was a great sufferer and her constant prayer was for the Lord to call her home. Death seemed to have no horrors for her, on the contrary whenever she spoke of her end drawing near her facce brightened in glad anticipation and her suffering seemed forgotten for the time. She could hardly wait it seemed, until the time of her release would come, and if her friends to encourage here spoke of her possible recovery she would reply that she wanted to go home and the day and hour of her release could not come too soon.
This happy anticipation of her heavenly journey was realized Monday morning, when she, sitting in her chair, went quietly to sleep in this world and awoke in the next. The Lord having answered one of her daily prayers, that as her suffering during her sickness was so great that she might be permitted to die an easy death, and as she passsed away in sleep her prayer was answered.
She was an old settler here, having lived here for the past 35 years, and that she had many and sincere friends was proved by the large number of anxious inquirers that came daily to see their old neighbor and friend, as many as forty people calling in one day, and despite her great suffering she had a bright word for all her friends. Mrs. MYERS was a warm-hearted, whole souled woman, generous to a fault, and no case of want ever came to her knowledge without her taking immediate steps to help the needy one; and in sickness she would leave her own home and for days would help to nurse the suffering ones, regardless of the nature of the disease. Her neighbors and friends tried by kind nursing and assistance to repay at least in part the kindness she had shown them in days gone by.
Eliza CODY was born March 20, 1848, at LeClair, Iowa, and moved with her parents to Leavenworth, where on September 6th, 1865, she was united in marriage to G.W. MYERS. To this union were born eleven children, five of whom together with her husband are left to mourn a faithful wife and a kind and loving mother. The children are harry of Dension, Charlie of St. Louis, Roy of Cody, Wyoming, Frank at home, and Mrs. Nellie COPAS of Denison. She is also survived by three sisters, and one brother, Col. W.F. CODY of Wyoming; Mrs. Mary BRADFORD of Denver, Mrs. Julia GOODMAN and Mrs. Nellie WETMORE of Duluth, all of who have the sincere sympathy of their many friends.
Her funeral was conducted from the U.P. church of which she had been a member for the past twenty years. An old paster, Rev. Colvin of Nebraska conducted the funeral services, after which her remains were laid to rest in the R.P. cemetery, and as her casket was lowered in a grave lined with purple and white many silent tears were shed and friends turned with a sigh from the last resting place of one they found always loyal and true.
Over her life a curtain is drawn,
Under the sod she is sleeping,
Sleeping until the promised dawn
To angels shall give her keeping.
>From a Friend, February 10, 1902.
