Don't give up getting the facts confirmed! If you feel that your ancestor was related directly to "Buffalo Bill", then you really will want to check with the Cody Association to verify the relationship. Then you can even get registered for no cost, and they'll probably give you copies of records or other materials on your other ancestors. This is good to do for your future generations of your own family. That way you can decide "if" you want your own family officially published (or not!) in any books that they offer to members, too, as others have referred to this. But it's a good thing to get it documented and all these credible associations really do respect your privacy.
They do have at least one website, and there is also a Cody museum also, so any of them can probably even give you information back from a couple of centuries.
There are some very kind and friendly folks (and experienced!) on the forum right here who will be most helpful and can give you all that information!
Many of the Cody families were not related to "Buffalo Bill", but have other origins - so it's important to get it verified and documented in the interest of integrity and reputable research. There are a number of books on all these families of Irish and "Southern" Cody families, too. And there are many other websites for the various Cody branches. MMaybe some of the regular and experienced contributors here could offer to post those for everybody?
I don't know how to start a new thread, but it might be good for real avid Cody researchers (vs. those 'selling their wares'!) to share the websites that would be helpful to newbie Cody-family-seekers?

It's always very important to know 'just where you stand' in this relationship, and be sure to get it verified with accuracy. Too many 'think they are related' but haven't the proof to back it up - and that is something nobody wants to pass to their descendants and the future generations. We all work together to be sure to help each other and to get it correctly recorded!
If you are a Cody descendant, you'll definitely want to be sure to confirm that with their Family Association and become a registered member (if you are not already). They have plenty of research and materials to verify the relationship, and probably can give you even more on your own ancestors going back to around the 1600's.
They don't charge anything, and have a website and a full Cody Museum with all kinds of records where you can get copies and free information.
Since you are on email, it makes it easier to go to their websites and contact them. Somebody here on the forum could provide you with those email addresses, people to contact, etc.

The document I have is his Border Crossing card from 1914, and it is available on Ancestry.com. Thomas's naturalization card lists his deceased wife Alice.
John Cody was my great-grandfather, and the reason we know next to nothing about him is because within ten years of marriage my great-grandmother divorced him because of his abusive tendencies.

I know John Cody's parents are James and Elizabeth. I have looked this up in the church records myself.
I would like to make sure that the John Cody you have been researching is the same John Cody I am looking for. On which document did he list Thomas and James for references? Was this his immigration or naturalization records? Are they available on ancestry.com?
Was John Cody a family member of yours?

I honestly am not sure who John Cody's parents were. I knew he had an uncle here in America as a contact for his immigration, and he also listed his father James as another contact, but I cannot find any traces of James Cody anywhere for Harbour Grace.

Wow! Finally there is a connection. I have researched John Cody for a while without making a definite connection to my family.
My great-grandparents, James Cody and Elizabeth Butler of Harbour Grace, had a son John Coady (Cody) who was born 27 Feb 1892. He seemed to have disappeared as there was no record of him in Harbour Grace and no one in the family really knew of his existence. John Cody had a few brothers and sisters, one of which was Raymond Coady, my grandfather.
I did find John Cody in the ancestry.com documentation but could never link him to my family for sure. Are you sure that this John Cody is the son of James Cody from Harbour Grace?

I know for a fact that John's father was James Cody, although I have no idea who his wife was. His contact coming to America from Canada was his uncle Thomas. From what I've researched, John's grandfather was Edward, and his great-grandfather was Timothy, all living in Harbour Grace until John and Thomas left.

I appreciate all your help on this. I have been searching for quite some time. My mother is a Coady from Harbour Grace so I am trying to make the connection.

I know this is incredibly late, but my great-grandmother was Clara Rockwell who married John Cody in Somerville, Massachusetts. She divorced him sometime between 1920-1930 and during that time he became a boarder with Thomas Walsh.

This website has lots of information about the Family of Buffalo Bill. There is a museum and research center of his life.
At the bottom of this page it even shows a couple of genealogy persons to contact and ask questions!

It always helps to add as much information as you can in your queries.
A couple of good sources for CODY (as in Buffalo Bill) research are: "The Cody Family in America, 1954" and "The Cody Family Handbook-Directory, 1941".
I did find a Dora Belle CODY in "The Cody Family in America, 1954".
pg 84 as a daughter of Thomas CODY (1829-1895) and Mary Elizabeth DAVID (1832-1879)
Dora Belle was b. 25 Jan 1862 in Libson, Illinois. She m. George Alfred JACKS on 27 Nov 1881 and d. 19 Jan 1936 in Janseville, Wisconsin. They had three children.
Good luck in your search!

Let the folks know what you need to make the link, and it's likely that others may have the information sitting right there! For example: What are the first names of the CODY family - and what are some of the connected surnames that you are working with? That would be a starting point for those who are related to your CODY branches. Also don't forget to post about whatever locations and dates (in general, if not specific) that would help the forum readers who also research their Cody names.
There's plenty of good reasearchers who can help you! Also it's quite possible you will find a relative of yours right here, too!
Welcome to the forum, and don't forget to keep on asking questions and provide as much information as possible! :)
