The Cody family has two cemeteries in Warren County, Ga.
The first is located near a school there and the other is
on a private farm. James and Sarah are located on the farm.
Should you like to look at the Cody family they are located
in the History of Warren County, Georgia also.
Howard Wright a cousin in Mississippi published a book a few
years ago on the Cody line and you might find it in the
library in Athens. I know there is one at the Decatur and
the Georgia Archives.

Posting this information here since it may be of interest to others who are researching the descendants of James Cody & Sarah Womack. This follows my branch of the Codys through Mary Cody & George Lumpkin:
>From the book "Lumpkin" written by Bryan H. Lumpkin that was published in 1936. Here is what was written about the Codys, specifically Mary & George:
"Deeds and Other papers of Halifax County.
Geo. Lumpkin and Mary his wife of Orange County Province of North Carolina sell Roger Atkinson fifteen acres of land for 25 pounds current money of Virginia. 'Opposite the mouth of Jackson's Creek on Dan River' Granted to the said Geo. Lumpkin by letters patent bearing date the 15th of Aug. 1765, same duly recorded in Secretaries office in Williamsburg. Dated Aug. 1 1766 Deed Book 6, p. 21.
Geo. Lumpkin of the County of Halifax sells land in County of Halifax on both sides Sandy River for 80 pounds current money of Virginia. No acreage given. Dated Sept. 18th 1766-Deed Book 6, p. 98
Geo. Lumpkin [sells] unto Wm. Boyd, negro girl named Sal. Oct. 20th 1766. Deed Book 6, p. 391
Geo. Lumpkin and Mary his wife [sell] to Dix [possibly Dixon Lumpkin?], 124 acres North side of Dan River. Jan. 22, 1767 Deed Book 6, p. 414
Family records give Geo. Lumpkin as married to Mary Cody in 1748. It is said that James Cody, the father of Mary Cody, came to Virginia from Ireland in 1730 and settled on the James River. Later he moved to Halifax County, but as this country was not set off until 1752, the marriage record of Geo. Lumpkin and Mary Cody will show in some other county. Mary Cody must have been born in Ireland or else married at a tender age. James Cody and his wife were members of the Episcopal Church. L.L. Cody says that James Cody married Sarah Womack in Halifax County, no doubt the territory which was later Halifax County. Perhaps James Cody settled in America earlier than 1730."
I also have a copy of the letter where my G-G-G-G-G-granduncle, Gov. Wilson Lumpkin, writes to his daughter Ann Alden (from his 1st marriage to Elizabeth Walker), about the Codys on Oct. 20, 1852 Athens, GA.:
"The maiden name of my grandmother was Cody, and she like all the rest of those days, was a most excellent woman; just what the best of women should be. The Cody family of Warren County [GA.] were her relations; and upon investigation you will find them to be a highly respectable and meritorious family of people. My grandfather's three sons were named: Robert, George, and John; and his daughter, Mary, after her mother."
This letter also appears in the book "The Lumpkin Family of Virginia, Georgia, and Mississippi" by Ben Gray Lumpkin & Martha Neville Lumpkin published in 1973.
Wilson Lumpkin [Gov. of Georgia] was born in 1783 and his grandparents, Mary & George, both died after 1790. Chances are Wilson may have known them even though he was a young boy at the time. He alludes to knowing them and the kind of people that they were, as well as his other Cody kin in Warren County, GA. in the letter to his daughter.

Most of the time I drive to Athens and do research at the Hargrett Library. They have a lot of the original documents from the Lumpkin family archived there, including Wilson Lumpkin's handwritten memoirs. I have copied a lot of the pages from his books where he writes about his family. I will go back and see if he mentions anything about the relation of Mary to James, since she would have been his grandmother (if the relationship wasn't changed to list her as the sister of James). Perhaps they will have Mary Warren's DAR papers there? I am not familiar with her name.

I would not be hasty in changing anything until someone hands you proof that The "old timers" were wrong. They lived at the or at least near the time period of the ancestors and therefore knew some of the kin so I would hold back on the change.
I have read his book and have a copy of the book as well as well as several of the others. If you have a D.A.R. section of the library there in one of the towns then look up a Mary Warren and see what she had to say about the relation.
I will keep Mary as the daughter to Jacob and Sarah Womack Cody until someone proves to me that she is not a daughter.

Hi Paul,
I just finished incorporating your branch of the Codys into my own family tree file and it looks like you and I are 6th cousins (3 times removed). I also did a little more research on my Mary Cody-Lumpkin and the general concensus seems to be that she is the sister of James instead of this daughter. I have corrected that in my files. I do wonder if this means that she was born in Ireland too. I have not seen that cited anywhere yet.

I thought we might be related. I am always thrilled when I meet a living descendant that shares a common lineage. It's nice to be able to make a connection and talk to a living relative while trying to decipher what the ancestors are trying to convey to you on paper. The only living Cody descendants that I have contact with are those who descend through the same Lumpkin-Cody line as myself, so you're actually the first person that I have found within the Cody family outside of my own branch.
We are closer to Monroe and Winder more so than the city limits of Loganville. It seems that I am surrounded by some of the Cody history in our area judging by what I have read on the posts, with Jackson, Barrow, and Walton being some of the hotspots. I had no idea.
I was looking through some of my files last night and found my "Lumpkin Lore" book by L.L. Cody (published in 1928). Are you familiar with this book? It has my line of Codys in it and lists Mary as being the daughter of James. It would not be the first time that erroneous information has been published if that isn't the case, and after doing a little more research last night it appears that more people are leaning towards their relationship being siblings instead of father and daughter. i think I may need to go back and do some rearranging within the generations. That would make your Jacob a nephew to my Mary then, as well as Jesse that Alfred S. Cody descends from, correct? I am just making sure that I have the names in this thread sorted correctly.

Sandy,
I am down from Jacob and Elizabeth Gilliland Cody who moved from Jackson County, Georgia around 1811 or so and went to Giles County, Tennessee and from there to Fayette/Hardeman County, Tennessee and then into Marion County, Alabama where he died.
Do you live in Logansville itself or outside Logansville? I have a fellow who works with me from Jersey, Georgia.

Hi Paul! Thank you so much for sorting those children out for me. I really appreciate that. Now I can look forward filling in all of the dates, locations, spouses and children for each sibling and recording their branches to living descendants. I've done extensive research on my Lumpkins and Womacks (also needs to be added to my genealogy website) and have just now come back to my Codys. Though not new to genealogy, I am new to Ancestry.com so I'm still learning how to navigate the website.
I have seen several people saying the same about Mary as you did, though I don't think that anyone has found conclusive information that determines which generation she is. Her husband, George Lumpkin, was b. 1723 in King & Queen Co., VA. and d. 1800 on Long Creek, Oglethorpe Co., GA. If she is close in age to him (I have dates as b. ABT. 1728 and d. AFT. 1790) then that would make her roughly 20 years older than some of her siblings, which is very plausible with 9 children. It would be nice to know for sure though. Which of the sibling do you descend from? I am thinking that we are going to be distant cousins.
I live in Loganville, Georgia and I am originally from Watkinsville. My family still lives in around there and in Athens. I look forward to talking with more and thank you again.
Sandy

Part of the list you have given me is correct on the James and Sarah Womack Cody line. I will give you the children but not in order; MICHAEL, JOHN, JESSE, RICHARD, EDMUND, JACOB, DAVID and "SALLY" or SARAH and your MARY. Now Sally and Mary were the only two girls that I suspect but there was some question about Mary. Her birth date has not been found as far as I know and if she was the oldest then she may have been a sister to James Cody as one person suggested, but as for myself I believe she was a sister just as Mrs.Warren stated in her writing in the early 1900's. Sally may have been a granddaughter as well and it is speculated by one lady that she was a daughter but I am not so sure of that as well. In other words the two girls may be suspect as either a daughter or a sister or a granddaughter. John had a child Abner and that is all that I have on him. John moved into Alabama about 1812 or so and settled on Creek Land near Luverne, Crewshaw County, Alabama. He did have !
several children including the Abner that I mentioned. Abner was suppose to have gone west but I have never found a trace of him. He may have used a first name or a middle name and that would through things off a bit.
Richard also had a son Abner and he was in the Greene County, Georgia records and that was mentioned just in passing with a brother William. Richard was suppose to have died in a horse racing accident but I have not found him as yet. I did find one Richard who was killed but I don't think it was him -maybe another son. I have maybe thirteen three ring binders stuffed with Cody info. so this is just a little of what I have.
Jesse has covered his trail as well. He settled in Jackson County, Georgia and after the 1840 census I loose him and have not picked him up again. I do have some of his children but am not sure if it is children on some or grandsons.
I live in Decatur, Georgia and I was wondering where you live?

I am searching for information for my 7th great-grandmother, Mary Cody and her family. I do not have a definite birth or death date for her, but I have that she was born in Halifax Co., VA. or N.C. and married George September 20, 1748 in Halifax Co., VA. Her parents were James Cody of County Kilkenny, Ireland and Sarah Womack. I have a conflicting list of siblings for Mary so I will list all of the names that I have for them. However, I have only 2 dates and no other information for them. I would like to fill in the missing information (dates, location, spouses, children), but I am not sure what the correct list is. Here is what I have:
John
Jesse
David
Jacob
Richard
Abner
Abraham
Mary
Michael b. June 23, 1768 Halifax Co., N.C. or VA.
Ailse
David
Edmund b. March 29, 1754 Halifax Co., N.C. or VA.
Any help in sorting this out would be greatly appreciated. I am happy to share what I have as well, and it can be found on my genealogy website: http://www.georgiakellys.com/genealogy.htm I have not listed my Cody line due to the fact that it is so incomplete with conflicting information. Thanks so much for your help!

I am curious if this line of Codys are related to mine. Several of the names look familiar, but I have some missing information for them. I am a direct descendant of the Codys as well through the marriage of Geo. Lumpkin, Sr. & Mary Archdeacon Cody. Mary's parents were James Cody and Sarah Womack. Married 1760 in Virginia. I have their children as: John, Jesse, David, Jacob, Richard, Abner, Abraham, Mary "Cody" Archdeacon Cody, Michael (b. June 23, 1768 Halifax Co., N.C. or VA.), David, and Edmund (b. March 29, 1754 Halifax Co., N.C. or VA.). From there my line continues through their son, John Lumpkin & Lucy Elizabeth Hopson. They were the parents of some of the well-known Lumpkins of Athens, GA. and in Oglethorpe Co., GA.
Any help that you could offer would be greatly appreciated. I also have a genealogy website that has a few of my family lines on there, most of them being from Clarke, Oconee, Jackson, and Oglethorpe: http://www.georgiakellys.com/genealogy.htm Thank you so much!
