Who is Mathew?
Hello,
That would be Matthew David Cody, the man in question, being discussed.
Naturally, this all directly responded to the immediately-prior inquiry that
was posted (which was therefore automatically attached at the bottom of my
reply). The query was presented from his great grandchild.

Greetings,
I have a few considerations, and sparse input of suggestions that I hope
will be helpful. Firstly, where was Matthew's mother born? It appears that you
know something about her, so that may be worthy of continued, and related,
exploration in the search for the Cody in question. Since she died during the
time period that we consider to be "not that long ago", it may be quite
possible to locate that information (a death record or certificate?) that could
otherwise seem nonessential. Looking, and asking, at that specific geographic
region "may" yield a viable clue as to her first marriage to Matthew's Cody
father. Perhaps then you will locate a record of their marriage that would then
identify that elusive gggf of yours. Was she possibly living with (or nearby)
any of the daughters when she died? Knowing where she was buried, at least,
could give a tombstone date - and possible cemetery or funeral home records,
leading to an obituary that may name siblings of hers. This is all a part of
the dot-connecting that may lead to the question of finding your Cody
ancestors - and thus, the Cody man who provided a good number of offspring to
possibly have carried that surname.
It's interesting, albeit "may" be quite unrelated, that there were several
known Cody families specifically in Bridgeport, CT (the same of those who were
also located in Middlesex, CT) whose parents emigrated from Roscommon,
Ireland. They are in no manner related to me; but as with the others in the
community of sharing, I'd nevertheless be glad to assist to steer you here with a
few comments and observations. However, assuredly I don't know of a Matthew,
yet "James" was definitely one of the given names of those families -
suggesting a possible naming pattern that would seem to fit during that same time
period (whether James was the actual eldest son, or simply a sibling who was
older than Matthew). Knowing where Bridget married the second time may also be
significant to provide a clue as to where Matthew's father passed; since it's
possible (although not always so) that she did not move far with the children
when she became widowed. From that point you may be able to view a will or
probate that may name his children, or at least confirm Bridget as his wife at
the time; since they had at least been married long enough to have had nine
Cody children.
Have you obtained a birth record for your ggf Matthew? When was his own
death, and where? Have you explored the birth, or death, records of his known
siblings? Again, when did Matthew's mother remarry? Again, that fact would serve
to provide a general timeframe of when Matthew's father passed, since you
say that Matthew was the last child born (1890) to this union. Wondering are
the other locations (NY and RI) in the original subject line to the forum
pertinent, and how?
What were the names of Bridget's parents, and where did they live? This may
provide a clue as to her birth or baptism, and possibly a church where she
(or her siblings) married. Knowing the (approximate) date that she was born
"might' (although not necessarily, if her spouse were significantly older) also
give an approximate range of years for the birth of Matthew's father.
I'm sincerely attempting to be helpful; and these ?'s may at least help
others on the forum to be prompted with a connection to a related Cody ancestor
of their own - hopefully, yours. Additionally, it may somewhat serve to tailor
your inquiries to the library and/or historical societies in the Bridgeport
area - as a springboard for what you already know to be fact. If nothing
else, (and likely you have already done so) making inquiries (and courthouse
friends!) in that location would be an excellent foundation.
Regards,
Barbara

Do you have anything on Betsy Lewis's family? She was one of Buffalo Bill's grandmothers.
