I think I have heard of this technique -- where lacking a ready opportunity to blind with brilliance, the plan shifts to baffling with whatever one can shovel up (or, if dried, pick up). Seriously Vernon, typing endlessly without addressing the initial (and oft reiterated) question is not the same as responding. I have an idea that (I am guessing here) could satisfy both of us.
Why not start a new message chain under a brand new heading (perhaps something like, "Random Records of Virginia")? That way, you could post to your heart's content -- and I would not be alerted! As an added bonus, the message header would actually reflect the content of the message, and everyone would end up ahead. At least consider that as a positive way to use your energies in a way that would benefit others. --Carl

Well, he has begun in Westmoreland Co. VA, but now he has moved to a specific county in Maryland based on someone whom he thinks is at least possible as a father candidate -- and 17 years after he claims the requisite birth occurred. I am underwhelmed.
Seriously, Vernon, you have started with promises of grandeur but unfortunately have lasped into the absurd -- and I was just so confident that you had Pierce’s Social security number AND his finger prints. Darn. Now, here I sit all brokenhearted, and I just can't find a rhyme that works to complete that sentence.
Why bother to shove this train out of the station if you had no destination in mind? I suspect discussing what constitutes genealogical evidence might be a bit akin to spitting in the wind.
HAVING SAID THAT (or is that TYPED that?), it has been moderately uninformative, but thanks for the memories.
If you (or anyone else) ever discovers any real evidence regarding (oooooo -- dare I say it again?) a closely approximate year of birth and a reasonably supportable location for that birth for the Pierce Cody who was in the 1727 records of Spotsylvania Co. VA, do us all a favor and post it here.
Now I have to get back in my cell in the asylum. --Carl

She married Kenelm Cheseldyne 1677 in White's Neck Farm, St.Mary's CO, MD. The settlers began by settling close to one another. By !
1642, they had spread out into three major settlement clusters. (Menar
d 1984). Sites were chosen primarily for their tobacco production, but also for growing Indian corn, English grains, garden crops, and the grazing of livestock. The settlers formed into the manorial system, with 16 private manors by 1642. Most of the more prominent immigrants were Roman Catholic, although some Protestants of high standing were recruited as well. The majority of the settlers lived and worked on the manors of the Gentlemen as indentured servants or tenant farmers. Most of them were Protestants, most were young males, there were few women and children, and complete family units were rare. The indentured servants were either elite men who had special talents to offer their masters, such as tailors, carpenters, joiners, millers, shoemakers, and even one reported case of a medical doctor. (Main 1982) These skilled servants made up only about 4 percent of the total. The remainder of the servants were laborers. This hierarchical structure did not protect the colony !
from disorder and dissention internally and externally. External dissention included conflicts with the Indians, London merchants, and the English in Virginia and on Kent Island. Internal dissention was blamed, in part, on the unruliness of the Gentlemen settlers who appeared to be out for themselves in their pursuit of power, profit, and personal growth. There was dissention between proprietors and colonists, Catholics and Protestants, local leaders and settlers, and among the Gentlemen themselves. The result of this "looking out for number one" attitude resulted in anarchy in the middle 1640's. (Menard 1984) Richard Ingle, a Protestant ship captain, arrived in the new settlement with a crew of sailors and mercenaries who transposed England's civil war to St. Mary's. John Coode was born in Cornwall, England in 1648, into a wealthy English family and attended school at Oxford University when he was 16 years old. In 1669, Coode became an Anglican priest. He served as a minis!
ter briefly in the colony. He soon gave up the priesthood and married
a wealthy widow named Susannah Slye. He served as a SMC Court Justice 1677-1681, 1689. He served as Sheriff 1694, 1704, 1706-1709 (History of SMC, Hammett) It appears that Susannah had children by her first marriage, that John may have adopted or that he had children by his second marriage to Elizabeth, for there was a problem with inheritance as noted below. Hmmm -- another dump of raw data about lots of people found in various records in various places, none of which sheds light on the question at hand.
You seem to have lost sight of the original query, so I will paraphrase it again.
Do you have any evidence that clearly provides a year (or closely approximate year) for the birth of the Pierce Cody who appears in Spotsylvania Co. VA records as early as 1727? And do you have any evidence that would suggest a specific birth county and state for that Pierce Cody?
It seems counterproductive to keep responding to messages that neither address that nor advance the chance of that being addressed.
I've still got my nose ready for a little shoving around in the pile of that evidence -- just in case. --Carl

I am not descended from Pierce Cody. Erroneous conclusions drawn in the 1920's (and repeated in print for many decades and on web sites more recently) incorrectly crossed my Hosea Rose family with a Taylor/Bradford family of Fauquier Co. VA.
Another Rose man Bennett Rose -- whose limited records actually place him in the proper place with the proper connections -- appears to be the stepfather in the Taylor case in question. Following a removal to the Surry Co. NC area, the descendant families became involved with the Cody families there.
As part of an effort to prove the Bennett Rose connections, it was necessary to learn details of the Cody families, including Pierce Cody of White Co. TN (who appears to have a son Bennet Rose Cody).
Which led me to Godfrey Cody of Surry Co. NC -- which led me to the older Pierce Cody.
As a result, I discovered that there were lots of claims uniformly being made about the Cody families that seemed to have taken on a life of thier own, without any obvious basis in fact.
Which led to me trying to start from the ground up on a solid foundation. Which led to my messages attempting to learn if there was even clear evidence of when and where the older Pierce Cody was born.
I felt that if there was clear evidence, surely at least one of the many, many Cody researchers would be able to readily cite such evidence.
If the long silences that have resulted from asking the question are any indicator, these families have far less evidence in hand than the claims would suggest. --Carl

Carl, Hang in there, I will give it to you yet!! What proof do you have that you are decended from Pierce Codey? I have been cross referencing all the info on the web. Four families that I know of claim to be decended from Pierce. If I can narrow down the locations to look, with nothing but the web. going thru court hoses can come later.---Vern

Well, you have stated, "The apx. birth date was based on 5 tiths in 1732 and death in 1760." That is quite a leap, determining when someone was born from when they died and how many polls were in the household. And now you even have Maryland suggested for his birth. I keep looking for that promised nose rubbing that earlier had your affection. <grin>
Is it safe to say you don't really have anything that shows a year or location for the birth of Pierce Cody? I think that was the original question posed -- and the one you embraced so heartily. --Carl

The apx. birth date was based on 5 tiths in 1732 and death in 1760. It is apx. If his father is William, as the evidence leads me to believe and I am correct on the earlier birth date. He could have been born in Maryland. I was trying to trace our line back to Allin De Cude (arrived 1639) but the info keeps pointing to John Coode ( pronounced Code) and it appears our families may be related, you can look over the info and draw your own opinions. I will give our e-mail address to MYFAMILY.COM and they will send you an email. Vern
