Kathy, thank you very much for the quick (and hopefully) good response on John J. Cody. There is enough coincidences that I will pursue it...e.g. Thomas & Eliza, age is about right for their son, they did come County Kilkenny, my ggf Mathew Cody is buried in Holy Cross and also died a pauper....Who knows maybe you solved a mystery for me....I'll keep you posted. I will also follow up on the Brooklyn Eagle obit for listing of other relatives, etc...Thanks again, Don

Hi Don,
This is what I have on John J. Cody
He is interred in Holy Cross Cemetery which is located at 3620 Tilden Avenue, Brooklyn, N.Y The grave is located in Section Trinity, Range C, Plot 13 and Bartholomew Flanagan is the registered owner of the plot.(To coin a phrase the "plot" now thickens!) Bartholomew was my GGrandfather and in his later years was a funeral director. In 1893 he was living at 796 Fulton Street in Brooklyn which is the same address that John was living at. It is known that Bartholomew purchased many plots in Holy Cross as part of his funeral business and provided resting places for those who could not afford to purchase a plot themselves. I found John's obit on the Brooklyn Daily Eagle website, the November 4th, 1893 edition.
The info provided was basically Cody, John J. 11/3/1983.at 796 Fulton Street. Son of Thomas and Eliza Cody. Native of Castle Comer, Kilkenny, Ireland. According to the Cemetery records he was buried on 11/05/1893. He was 26 years old. I imagine that if you contact Holy Cross they may be able to give you additional info. I had only requested a listing of interments in the grave. Happy hunting and I hope I have found a family for my "orphan".
Regards,
Kathy

Two that I know of-Nancy Cody and her sister Elizabeth Cody(my gggrandmother) both married Wright brothers in Fayette County, Tennessee. They were both born in Jackson County, Georgia. Marion County, AL is where the family settled in about 1831 or so. Jacob is buried with a lot of the family at Friendship Cemetery North in Detroit,(now Lamar County, AL)and I still have not found any other girls---that does not mean that there wasn't naturally.
From Jackson County, GA they moved into Giles County, TN about 1813 or so. Jacob had land in Lauderdale County, AL and went from there to Fayette County, Tn and then to Marion County, Alabama.
If I can help just let me know.

Hello!
Saw your posting and find it interesting that you are in the location of a lot of the children of Jacob Cody who is buried at Friendship Cemetery in Detroit, Marion County, Alabama. He had a lot of sons and I still am looking for his children children. There are a lot of Cody families still in that area and I still do not have all of the listing on the families.

Paul,
Sorry I can't help you with where he was from. I know there are descendants of William Grover CODY still living and perhaps they will contact you. I know very little about his ex wife. She was my ancestor's sister. Story goes that William Grover Cody left his wife Anna Lee GOSNELL CODY with five children to raise and he re-married. Don't know much of what became of him beyond that.

Some of the Cody families of N.Mississippi married into the Kennedy families from that area. That area of Mississippi has a lot of Jacob Cody,s line.

Hi, I was wondering if you had the other info on this John Cody. My ggf Mathew Cody and wife Eliza had a son Thomas whom I cannot locate. He had a son John was born in 1870's in NYC and died there. Do you think there is any connection. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Jim~
Our CODY family emigrated Lismore Parish, County Waterford Ireland.
The CODY branch from the estate of Moorehill, after emigrating, appear to have
links to both surnames, the CHAMBERS/LYNCH of Ballyduff Mor. Ballyduff Mor
is also in Lismore Parish, very near Lismore Castle. Moorehill estate is
still owned by the same family but the MOORE surname has been replaced by
another via marriage of the inheriting daughter.
The original CHAMBERS/LYNCH emigrants of 1847 was to Boston, MA.
Also, we find numerous references to relatives in that area. A copy of a letter
dated 1958 from a daughter of a CHAMBERS son, has her living with a sister
also in the area of Wolburn, MA. We wrote to the address but never received a
response. The recipient of the letter also tried to contact her half-sisters
in the late 1990s but received no response. She died in CA last year at 100
yrs. of age! However, that is not the CODY branch, only CHAMBERS cousins.
Michael CODY emigrated about 1840 to the greater Boston area. He
married Margaret LYNCH (also, emigrated from County Waterford) who was a servant
in that same area. Their son Patrick CODY was born in 1850. About 20+ years
later he married Margaret CHAMBERS of Clearspring, MD. Margaret's mother
was Anastasia nee LYNCH CHAMBERS. It is thought that there was a connection of
the CODY/LYNCH/CHAMBERS families which starts in Ireland and then is
maintained in the USA. This would have been difficult considering the days of no
phones, PCs, and only the Post. Also, the CHAMBERS couple (John and Anastasia)
may have been illiterate. We base this on the fact that two of their sons
state in records that they were illiterate until after the Civil War. Then
both became educated, one became a Judge in MD and the other at retirement was
the oldest serving officer in the US Navy!
Patrick and Margaret (nee CHAMBERS) CODY lived in Salem, MA. He was a
published poet and a publisher. We have copies of several of his poems, done for
family occasions and other events both in MA and MD. He died there about
1938. In the early 1930s, he wrote the CODY PEDIGREE but didn't use dates.
Thus we had to piece our copy together using dates of the CHAMBERS family. An
acquaintance in County Waterford, made us aware about the MOORE descendants
because he often hunts very near that estate. Patrick and Margaret had at
least 9 children, possibly more. We would love to make contact with their
descendants. The thread was broken in the 1940s, probably around WW II. In my
husband's father's journal from WW I, he writes of contact with his CODY cousins
while in the US Army.

Dear Mary Ellen,
My Codys came from Ireland to Canada and Massachusetts
in the 1800s, and I have Patricks and Michaels in my
line. Do you know if your Codys are from Kilkenny,
Ireland?
