Could we be working on the same Cody family? I have a John Cody and Elizabeth "Betsy" Summers in Clay County, Kentucky. John had a brother Thomas Cody who lived in Perry County, Kentucky. Does any of this sound familiar? If so I would be happy to exchange information with you.

Hi all,
I am descended from the Cody family of Perry Co., Kentucky. In going through old papers, I came accross letters that my parents had received from the Kentucky Historical Society of Kentucky of people searching for Codys. I will copy the letters that I have in hopes that it might help make a connection for someone.
The following letter from John Cody, of North Surry, British Columbia: Sent Aug. 5, 1963:
Kentucky Historical Society, Frankfort, Ky.
Dear Sir;
My father Edward Cody was born in Prospect Kentucky in 1888 or 1896. I am trying to obtain his birth certificate and I understand you may have it in your files. I do not have very much information on him as I was very young when he and my mother separated.
I wrote to the vital statistics in Frankfort and they advised me to write here, he would of went to school from approx. 1894 to 1909 after that he traveled from the States to Canada, it was 1917 when he married my mother in Edmonton, Alberta, around the year1925 he left us and since then we hardly heard of him, would you please search your files for me.
Yours truly, John Cody.

This letter is from Mrs. Robert Schmitt, of Fort Thomas, Ky. Nov. 1, 1961
Kentucky Historical Society, Gentlemen:
I understand that you recently recorded some Ky. births and Death records for the years between 1851-1862. (Act of 1850).
If this is the cas would it be possible for you to check the birth records for me for the name of "Mary Cody" who was born between the years 1856 - 1860 in Newport, Campbell Co., Ky.?
Any information you can give me about the above would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely, Mrs. Robert Schmitt.
P.S. If you personally cannot aid me in the above, could you adress where I might find such information? As the above name is the last "link" I have to a long sought piece of information, it does mean a great deal to me.
In a second letter Mary Cody is listed as born in Covington, Kenton Co., Ky.
-------------------------------
The following letter is dated Mar. 6, 1969 from John B. Cody of Selma, Ala.
I will appreciate you sending me a compilation on the Cody family of Kentucky Colonial Times or Early Settlers.
I understand that you do not make extensive research. However, I will appreciate what information you can and will give us.
---------------------------
These were letters that my parents had gathered during their research of the family, and thought that they might be helpful to someone.

Andrew Cody is the son of James Cody & Mary Eliz. Dunn. Born 3/23/1835 in Tecumseth, died 1909 Sault St. Marie, Mich. He married Teresa Marie Bertles (d. of Joseph & Ann) 1871 Barrie. 1900 census says Teresa was the mother of 10 children; 2 children that I'm aware of : James & Anna.
Andrew is one of at least 11 children.

Hi I am tracing my husbands family tree. their name is Couttie, but before coming over to Scotland sometime between 1841 and 1859 they were Codie/Cody. they came from Kilkenny.
The people who came over were Michael (born around 1812) and Annie/Ann. They married in 1841 in Kilkenny and had a number of children, some of whom I think were born in Ireland (Edward, Christina). Michael's father was called Edward. Throughout the generations the Michaels have also used the name Matthew.

I see a Mary b. to Michael Cody & Anne Kelly on Green St., Callan in Oct. 1845. ButI don't see a marriage or other records among my papers. This would mean they moved to another parish, or perhaps emigrated.
Ann was the sponsor at baptism for a Wm Brien in 1848, same town, and in 1842 for Michael Shee where she was listed as sponsor as Miss Anny Kelly..

The surname CODY has various spellings throughout Ireland. Some based on
the native language, others the angalization of the Irish surname. It is found
in Waterford and Wexford, as a very common surname. Our CODY links are to
the estate of Moore Hill in the Bally Duff Mor area of Waterford. However, in
researching in Wexford and walking the cemeteries, it seems almost as common.
When families emigrated and were illiterate with strong brogues, spellings
become quite bizarre at times.

I am tracing my husband's family tree for the Couttie family. I have a record of Michael Couttie b 1867 Lochee Forfar. His parents were Michael Couttie and Annie Corday who married 1841 in Kilkenny. Michael's father was Edward Couttie.
However, one of Michael and Annie's children shows his surname as Codie on his birth Certficate, with parents Michael Codie and Annie Codie (nee Codie - confusing!).
The name was either changed to hide their Irish origins when they came to Scotland. Or, as neither party could write, the Registrar will have written the name as he felt it should be spelled. As there were already Coutties in the area, this seems likely.
I would be interested to see if there is any connection with the Codys for whom you have details.

If you still read this post, supposedly Buffalo Bill Cody was a great-great-great uncle of mine? I'm trying to piece information back to where I am, through some long-gone uncle I never knew the name of...I'm hoping to find some genealogy leading from Cody's to Ashby's.
