I'm looking for a James Cody prior to 1930. James was born 24 September 1901 in Brooklyn. His mother died at his birth and he and his brothers were split up, but I cannot locate him in the 1910 or 1920 NY Census. I was hoping that maybe I coud find him in one of the directories.

William P. Cody immigrated to NYC circa 1870 and lived in the lower east side all his life. He married a Margaret Keneally in 1881 in St. MAry's church on Grand St. and had several children all of whom lived on the lower east side. My mother "Bessie" was the youngest.
My gf worked for the water dept and died in 1915. Other relatives of his who were sponsors on baptism, etc were James Sarah Cody, Thomas F. Cody, and John Cody.
Hi Don, it's been a long time since we last communicated.
It still amazes me that your gf and my gf (Hanley, but married to a Cody) both worked in the water dept. in NY and we aren't directly related.
I've found my line back into Kilkenny in the 1600's. From there it goes back to Normandy...

Cliff,
You're right about the Kilkenny origin, the Cody name morphed into Cody in Kilkenny, but the name spread to Tipperary and Cork from there. Their biggest leases were in Kilkenny.
I do have records which may or may not help you. In Callan, Kilkenny, where the name is almost always spelled CODY, I do have a records for a few bapt. for Patricks...May 12, 1822, son of Patrick; June 8, 1822, son of Thomas; Aug. 7, 1825, son of Edmund; Oct. 22, 1826 and Feb 28 1826, son of William.
There are Quinlan families in the same area and townlands.
Don't know if any of this helps. but I'll send them along anyway.
Kate

The John Cody that I am searching for did not enter the U.S. but was born here. He is, no doubt, connect to your family but his ggrandfather came into the county in the late 1600's or early 1700's and settled in VA and from there a son James Cody moved into N.C. and then GA. All of the Cody family, I would suspect, are kin back in Ireland. James group came out of Kilkenny County, Ireland.

Amen to that. My Aunt and Uncle had the next homestead over from Buffalo Bills. He was no saint and was a farmer really. In those days everyone killed the Bufflo. Some hunted buffalo for the Army, some took the skins. My own great grandfather traded with the Indians in the late 1800"s and I have a photo of him in a Bufflo skin coat. I think Will Cody also did some scouting and hunting for the Army. Remember that when you were out in the new Old WEst on the prairie, Buffalo were a source of food, of coats, schoes, saddle blankets etd, Buffalo chips (dung) was gathered for fire places in a land of much prairie and little forest. Everyone thought the Buffalo was unending and it was said that you could stand on a hill in the prairie and see nothing but Buffalo to the horrison. He wasn't any more of a scoundral that anyone other frontier person and I think he had great respect for the Indian and had many good close Indian friends in his later theatrical adventures.
