Linda,
I am descended from the NC Codys as well. I was surfing the Kilkeny co.
website and found and article on the evolution of the name from Archdeacon to
Cody. The article points out that in what I remember as being in the 15th
century, although the name was spelled MacCody or Cody, it was pronounced
Coda. Our Irish ancestors may very well have brought that pronunciation with
them into Tennessee but spelled it Cody.

Does anyone on this list have Bordeau, Cody or Grazier ancestors from the St. Louis/St. Charles Co, MO. area? They eventually moved up into Buchanan Co., MO & across the river into Leavenworth Co., KS.
Particularly, I'm looking for the following people: Felix Bordeau who married Rosalie Cody, probably in St. Louis, MO. I know they had a daughter named Susan Mary born July 25, 1839. On July 30, 1860, in St. Charles Co., MO., Susan married Alexander Grazier. They had 9 children and she died Dec 14, 1913. Anyone related to these Bourdeaus, Codys or Graziers???

Dear Linda,
my grandfather was a Cody from Hancock County with the line originating in
NC but I don't know of any connection with your Julia. An excellent link to
Codys in Surry County, NC, (descendents of Pierce Cody) is
http://www.mindspring.com/~baumbach/cody/ .
I have also found the name spelled "Coda" is some historical documents.
Appalachian dialect would pronounce the a as a long e (e.g. my grandmother
Eva was called Evie). The question is whether the person transcribing the
name heard Cody and spelled it Coda or Coda became Cody because of
pronunciation.
Mike

Hi all,
I'm researching my husband's line and just found them on the 1880
census. I've been looking, off and on, for years, for a Julia Cody b.
abt. 1856, NC, married Feb. 02, 1878 Tipton Co., Tennessee to John
Owens, b. abt 1855 TN. On the census it states that Julia is listed as
Coda. Since DH is named after his g-grandmother's line, and his mother,
who named him, spelled his name CODY, I would like to assume that CodA
is a typo. Does anyone have Codys/Codas in Tipton TN that migrated from
NC? Now that I've found Julia's folks are from NC - is there anyone
that can offer weblinks that might have some verification of these folks?
Many thanks,
Linda
