You may want to check the History of Warren County, Georgia at the Georgia Archives and there was a short article on Michael Cody.
I have not found a will for Richard Cody but I do know that he had a wife named Elizabeth and two sons from what I could find. The two sons were in Jasper County, Georgia after the death of their father for a time but may have moved into another state.
Elizabeth, I believe, lived in Walton County, Georgia after her husband's death.
John Cody lived in Jackson Co., Ga. with brother's Jesse and Jacob. John moved to South Alabama and Jacob to Tennessee. Jesse may have died in Jackson County, or moved on west as well. Edmund is buried near his father James in the old Showes Cemetery on a farm and it is hard to get to. The stones are readable for the most part but there a lot of them that aren't and some may be slave graves...who knows? I think that Richard is buried there but no marked stone.

With thirteen three ring note books I would have a lot of posting. On one C D I have 15,000 names and bits of info. and it does not, of course, cover just Codys. There are the connecting families as well.
I do not mind sharing with anyone and would suggest that one should contact a gentleman in Oklahoma City for the Cody book on the Cody line of James Cody. I know that I have a lot of info. that he does not have on the Georgia Cody line, but he does have mos of what I have.
I will share with anyone as I stated but to put it on the web here would be a lot of writing.

None of the families have as much info. as I have because of the amount of time and years that I have put into collecting it from the James and Sarah Womack Cody line. Some have info. on their part of the family but I have a collection of about 13 note books that I have had for thirty years.
I have never tried to trace the slaves because of the time element of just tracing the white families.
The cemetery is located behind the military school there in Warrenton. The dirt road you go up is trickey and the bugs will have a field day eating on you. I would not go again in the summer because of the snakes and other varmits that hide in the vines in the cemetery.
James and the older brother is buried on a farm a few miles from where Michael is buried. That was even worse trying to get to and I got lost and walked three miles back there to find the graves. They were buried in 1794.
You may want to call me on this one. My w1937(a)mindspring.com is where you can reach me.

Hi Dona,
Thanks for the answer on the message board. I have very little info on Indian Joe's background and he said very little about himself when talking to the neighbors in Day Creek. In fact, most of the neighbors thought that he had entered the U.S. (from Canada) illegally. He was living in D.C. in the early 30's. He would never accept a check from anybody-cash only. He made a living by making cedar row boats and cutting shake blocks to sell. When he died, he was in his cabin so the sheriff came and set fire to the building because of the condition of the body. The obit in the paper gave no info on family--just his name and approximate age. Does this help? Deanna

This could be a long-shot but...
My Great-Great-Great Grandmother Katie was originally owned (I believe) by Codys of Warren, County... Somehow she became a Wingfield and bore children with that surname...
Here is the twist...
She later married a man of Native-American decent named "Joe Dorsey" and bore children: Mack, Missie, Goldie & Daisy.
Do you know if your Joe was a freeman or slave or how he acquired the surname, Cody?
Don't know if our "Joe's" are the same but please let's share any information that either one comes across... Okay?
Thanks!

Oh my goodness! This information is so helpful!
Questions... Questions... Questions...
1. Do you know if any of the descendants of "James" or "Micharel" (is that the correct spelling?) are online?
2. Are any of their records online? If not, where can they be found?
3. Is there any way to remember the Wingfield that existed in both Warren and Wilkes County?
4. Have you ever come across any business or marriage relations between the Cody's and Wingfield's?
5. Do you have the name of the cemetary where Micharel Cody and those respective slaves are buried?
THANK YOU SO MUCH! THIS HAS MADE MY DAY!

I know that some of the slaves of James Cody were mentioned in a will I do not recall those names. I have known of a Wingfield family in both Warren and Washington Co., Ga. but I have not see any of the names of the slaves. Wills would be your best bet as often the children were given the different slaves.
There was a Wingfield Wright in Warren County, Ga. and he may or may not have had slaves but I would bet that if she was visiting a plantation in Warren County, and it was a Cody plantation it would have been Micharel Cody's.
I know where he is buried and there are slaves buried int he same cemetery. There very few few stones that are marked and I do not know for sure if the slave headstones are marked or not----it was overgrown to such an extent that I had trouble just getting in there.

Yes, there are Webbs in the Cody family tree. If you can give me more information, I can narrow it down for you. I don't know if you're a direct descendant but you do fit in somewhere. Write me directly at canajen(a)aol.com and use the subject LES CAUDE (this is the name the family had when they first arrived in 1698).

Buffalo Bill had no surviving sons (only son Kit died as a young child) only daughters, so he has no surviving descendants surnamed Cody. Kit Carson Cody who IS a direct descendant was born Kit Carson Garlow and changed his name to Cody.

Write me directly at canajen(a)aol.com. Please identify subject as LES CAUDE so I won't delete by accident. Buffalo Bill's ancestors original name was Les Caude.

I can confirm Irma Cody who married C. Stott was Buffalo Bill's daughter. If this is your line, I can take you back to 1698 when the Cody's arrived at Beverly, MA from the Isle of Guernsey. Many Irish Cody's claim a connection, but the Cody family arrived here as Les Caude and are not Irish. Write me if you'd like the family line. It's very well-documented. Please email me directly at canajen(a)aol.com and use LES CAUDE as the subject so I won't delete you.
