The Coddington family's first known ancestor seems to have been a certain William de Saint Michael, who was granted the manor of Codington (Codyngton), County Surrey, by King John in 1203, upon the forfeiture of Guy de Laval, who had previously held it. The elder line of the family continued to hold the manor until 1538, when King Henry VIII saw the lands and desired them. There was, naturally, an arrangement, whereby the King became possessed of the lands and manor, and Richard Codington of Codington was recompensed by receiving from the King the lands of the priory of Ixworth in Suffolk, which had just been sequestrated. Since Richard and his wife Elizabeth had no issue, they were glad to make the change, particularly since opposition to the royal will of that monarch was so dangerous. Henry VIII then built the palace of Nonesuch (or "nunsuch") on the lands of the manor of Codington, and presented this palace to Anne Boleyn. The following spellings of the family name have !
been found: Coddington, Codington, Codyngton, Cuddington, Cudington, Quedington, Quiddington, Quidyngton, and even (amazingly) Quedhampton. (John Insley Coddington in a letter dated May 13, 1956, to a Mr Arthur J. Willis, Kent, England.)

Has anyone been able to discover who James Coddington's father is?
James was born 1530 in Bletchingley, Eng married to Joan Stockdale. Ancestry.com trees link him to Robert Coddington of Coleby, England but this doesnt seem to fit. Am I wrong?
