I don't believe the spelling changed as the Coddington's moved...I feel it's more on how the census takers interpreted the spelling. I'm descended from Stephen Coddington/Corrington born 1769. His first marriage certificate in 1794 was signed as Coddington, but when he remarried in 1833, he signed his name as Corrington. This was in Kentucky, by the way. There is a Joseph Coddington/Corrington botn 1763 living in Ohio (believed to be related to Stephen but can't find proof)who died in 1833. His will is signed as Coddington. There was a codicil to the will by his widow wanting to transfer administration of will over to her son, John Coddington. It was signed with her "mark" and written next to it was Saray Corrington. I read in one place where it was thought there was a rift in the family and that's why the name was changed. Another instance was how they pronounced the name, meaning the English rolled the "d's" on their tongue and came out sounding like "r's" to the censu!
s takers.....Jackie

Thanks, I'm a descendant of Stephen - do you have any information on John and Elizabeth listed as his parents?

do you have the report of the Coddington's owning/leasing the hotel out at Spring Creek? - Young 1860's gold rush era. Please let me know as I know I have it in my research from the local Young paper. Did William come out to Australia and then farmed or did he come to the Young area then go over to the Murrumburah area? Just curious
