as I said it was a hand written in a Town ledger titled "Births, Deaths and Marriages" belonging to the Town of Hector.
The entry was in the section "Births" and listed the date/name and then the remarks "illegimate son of John M. Coddington and Lucy Case". Google Town of Hector Historian if you want her address, she has the ledger.

What's the proof of illegimate? I interpreted it as Lucy dying in childbirth, and John C. ending up in John M. & Sally's 1950 census record (grandparents). No marriage record for the former, but that was often true. NB. John C. would have been the son (legitimate or otherwise of John L., not John M.). What does the source say?
Jonathan

Every year around November the town of Hector, Schuyler County New York has "Archive Week" where early records are available for public view. Last November I discovered an interesting item concerning John M. Coddington (my 4ggf), in a small ledger titled "Births, Deaths & Marriages" was a birth entry for John M. Coddington 2nd, born 21 September 1847 the illegitimate son of John M. Coddington and Lucy Case.
The 1850 Federal Census Hector, Tompkins NY pg 412 has John M. Coddington age 61, Sally age 60, Susan age 20, Humphrey C. Carmen age 20 (laborer) and John C. Coddington age 2 (no longer listed as John M. the 2nd). On same page just 3 entries below is George Whitman age 73, Huldah age 65, John age 20 and Lucy Case age 26 (probably a domestic).
It must have been a cold January in 1847. I never found any other reference to Lucy.
