Dear Kind Sir, Jonathan,
I SO appreciated your response - it's fascinating! Yet I did leave out some details - I am in touch with a newly found cousin, Candice Cuddington, daughter of the "grandson" raised with my grandma, Marguerite. We found each other a year ago through this wonderful bulletin board! But we're the only two trying to solve the mysteries - she's as perplexed as I about her heritage, although her father is still living. She's just now looking into DNA testing. I would love to share a little more info if you'd be willing. Please contact me at hoganics(a)hotmail.com so I can clear up some of the message I apparently (and inadvertently) misled you on. You may find it interesting!
Sincerely yours,
Shari Engel Hogan

Shari,
The frequency of "fake" Cuddingtons (i.e. mutated from Coddington) is pretty low (<1% of pre 20th C Coddingtons). I know of just two such name changes, one in Ohio, and one in Michigan, both in the early to mid-1800's, though both instances have proliferated. One Ohio Cuddington did die in Illinois (Minor, 1904, Dixon, Lee Co. and he married Bryant in Whiteside Co. Illinois in 1872, see http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~coddingtons/8841.htm), but that, as far as I know, is it. No Wertz's intermarried in the 19th century with Co/uddingtons, again, as far as I know. From what you say, a woman named Wertz probably married a man named Cuddington.
Cuddingtons are always rarer than Coddingtons in census records, but, they are usually true Cuddingtons, except in Ohio and Michigan. Some Donaldsons married Coddingtons, but not in that part of the country.
Note that I haven't followed all Coddington lines into the 20th century...
So the "Coddington" list is probably a dry well. Sorry, Jonathan

To anyone that might be able to help:
Can find no background on my Grandmother, Marguerite Case (first name
perhaps Mary) and she would never speak of it. Born 16 Jul 1906 in Illinois
(probably Peoria), I'm led to believe only that her mother's name may have
been Donaldson. She only shows up in one census (1920) living with Aunt May
(Donaldson) and Uncle Gene Wertz along with their Grandson, Eugene
Cuddington. I know she married Ralph Weston (twice!) in late 1920's, 'cause
they had my Aunt (but Jan was raised by Weston Grandparents) prior to
marrying my Grandfather, Myrl Engel in early 1930's. If anyone recognizes
any of these name I'd be eternally grateful for your contact!
Sincerely yours,
Shari Engel Hogan
