Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Hi Maureen,
Already got them. I agree that Higginson Books is the place to go. For
that matter, I've also combed through and photocopied all his research
manuscripts (ca. 12 unpublished) and papers, which he donated to the New
Jersey Historical Society in Newark.
I just posted the heritage quest bit because, increasingly, county
libraries subscribe to on-line databases and one can access them from
home with a library card serial number. Heritage Quest has the best
indexed version of the 1860, 1870, 1900, and 1910 censuses, for example.
Ancestry.com is still woefully incomplete on that, though they don't
tell you, and they charge a lot for access.

Johnathan,
I was able to go to Barnes and Noble Bookstore and special order both of
the books that Rev Herbert Coddington, D.D. wrote. As long as you know
the publishing company and the dates they were done you can order them
also.
The other book is the descendants of Isaac, Reuben, and Uzziah of
Woodbridge, New Jersey. The publishing company is the Higginson Book
Company 148 Washington Street, P.O. Box 778 Salem, MA 01970
The phone number for them is 978/745-7170 and the fax is 978/745-8025.
There is also a website which is www.higginsonbooks.com
On the bottom of the very first page it says Syracuse, NY 1920. and it
is a pamphlet that is supplementary to the one published in 1907 under
the title of "The Coddington Family: Records of one line of the
descendants of John Coddington, of Woodbridge, N.J."
Isaac, Reuben, Uzziah, and Jotham (whose line is given in the 1907
pamphlet) were brothers, sons of Benjamin Coddington, born in 1680.
Benjamin was a son of the first John Coddington of Woodbridge.
Hope you have some luck if you really want copies of these two books you
can call or e-mail to order thousands of genealogy and local history
reprints available.

Hi Johathan
DNA. A very interested topic and one wich I would be prepared to take part in if my line was of interest. I live in the UK
I am Peter Coddington, my ancesters stem from Lincolnshire in the UK, Living in the
village of Coleby from about 1500 to 1580 and then moving to nearby areas.I think the earliest ancestor was Robert Coddington born about 1500 , who died in 1550, followed by his son William and then Edmund b 1542 died 5.12.1596.
I await your observations
Peter.

Hi Kris,
Right. If you'd like to join the DNA project to confirm your descent
from Stockdale (via a male relative), you would be MOST welcome.
However, the offer of a free test is extended only to Coddingtons who
probably do NOT descend from Stockdale. This is because all male
Coddingtons to date with reasonably good evidence of descent from
Stockdale are identical at all 43 markers, so your line will probably be
the same. You descend from what might be called the "minor" branch of N.
American Coddingtons (John 1677), as opposed to his younger brother
Benjamin, 1680.
Non-Stockdale descendants are mainly concentrated in Pennsylvania
(from Ireland), east and west Canada and Utah (ex Lincolnshire),
Australia and New Zealand (presumbably Lincolnshire), and, of course,
Great Britain, which is the nexus of confusion we are trying to sort
out.

To help you stay safe and secure online, we've developed the all new Yahoo! Security Centre.
Hi Peter,
That's odd, I got your post, but don't see it on the website. Oh
well.
In short, you're in! Here is what DNA heritage calls the "join code"
http://www.dnaheritage.com/oracle/join.asp?GroupUnique=199115613
Which is just a web form to fill out the usual details. You need to go
there and fill it out. Then they send you a kit (cheek swab), and you
send it back. As Project adminstrator, they copy me (I think) on all
correspondence, so at the appropriate moment, I will intervene and pay
the bill.
To the rest of you lurking on this list, who may be contemplating
participation, here's the deal (with apologies to veterans, as I've said
most of this before):
We have six formal participants to date, but one of them hasn't sent
in the sample. Four of us--all stockdale descendants--
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~coddingtons/1.htm
are identical at all 43 loci in what might be called the "deluxe" test.
Considering that it is about 9 generations back to Stockdale, and that
our partipants include both of his two surviving lines (John 1677 and
Benjamin 1680, see above link), one might have hoped for a couple of
intervening mutations. The more mutations, the more flavors of
Coddington there are, and the more "fine-grained" the genealogical bins
into which one can be genetically sorted. Note that none of these bins
come close to threatening personal privacy.
But no.
Therefore, preliminary conclusions are that Stockdale's y chromosome
has yet to mutate. That we are all identical massively corroborates pen
and ink genealogy. Stockdale is real, he had two grandsons that left
descendants, and we descend from them. For that reason, doing more
all-but-certain Stockdale descendants is a waste of money, probably.
We've boxed the genealogical "range" of his descendants and have found
no variation. Of course, within that range, in some as yet untested
Stockdale lineage, a y chromosome mutation may indeed have arisen, and,
if so, then descendants from that ancestor will have it. However, the
best chance to find such a mutation would have been to compare the most
distantly related cousins available, and we've done that to no avail.
But that just kicks the problem back in time. Our 5th participant
putatively descends from Lincolnshire Coddingtons, and he is WAY
different from the Stockdale descendants. Can't tell at this point
whether his haplotype is truly the Lincolnshire Coddington signature or
not, as we have only one participant from that line. (The other
explanation is a mistake in his pen-and-ink genealogy).
So we have no differences between Stockdale descendants and huge
differences between all Stockdale descendants and one Lincolnshire
descendant. At face value, that tends to corroborate, again, classical
genealogy. The Surrey and Lincolnshire Coddingtons are just
homonyms--both took surnames from different places that bore the same
name. The third "clot" of British Coddingtons comes from Cheshire (where
they are supposedly extinct), but they cleverly moved to Ireland in the
1600's, and although they have not exactly prospered in Ireland, they
still exist, and over the centuries have also sent propagules out to
colonize other areas.
Surrey -- Lincolnshire -- Cheshire. Are they one or many?
Peter, being thoroughly from Lincolnshire, will test whether our
single Lincolnshire participant is typical or not. More from
Lincolnshire would be better.
We also have a very-probably ex-Lincolnshire near-participant from
Canada. At this point, but not for much longer, the more the merrier.
"Not for much longer" means that the offer to defray the costs is
limited. At this point, you'd either have to represent a real stone
wall in Stockdale genealogy or else be a certified Cheshire/Ireland
Coddington.
The sixth participant is the former, a descendant from Kentucky
"Corringtons" in the 1700's, whose antecedents are unknown. It's
possible they don't tie to Stockdale, in which case a whole lot of Ohio
"Coddingtons" are another kettle of fish.
And we don't have even a nibble from an Irish-connected Coddington.

Hi Clare,
Glad to hear you are so enthusiastic! However, not just any y chromosome will do...it has to be an unbroken line of descent from the ancestor of interest, thus Stephen Corrington, or whatever. Your sons have Brice y chromosomes, not Corrington.
Do you have living uncles or male Corrington cousins?

I have not been active in a few years and today I fell upon the DNA project information...wow! What do I need to do to participate? I don't think that I can participate...only male decendents, right? But I have 4 sons so surely I can convince one of them to help. My father Edward Lawrence Corrington, comes down from Stephen, born 1769 in New Jersey. He appears in Ky in 1794 using both Corrington and Coddington surnames and I can find no trace of him prior to that. I have been told that he is the son of John, but I have not been given any concrete information to that effect. Please let me know what we need to do to participate in your project.
