The proof is the 28 Jun 1807 letter of Moses Coddington to William
Robeson, his niece's husband, which I quote below. I got this text from
Merlyn Coddington (now deceased), who apparently got it from E. R.
[Edwin Robeson?] MacKethan III, a man I have not been able to locate
(does anyone know him?). I suppose it is genuine, but have not seen the
original.
This means that the William John I. Coddington hypothesized to be the
son of Benjamin and Katharine Martin and the father of the three
brothers who founded the Garrett Co. MD Coddingtons need not exist.
John I. was quite clear that the foregoing was guesswork. I suppose he
had evidence of a William abt 1733-1830 (or facts that could be so
construed) and guessed that he was a son of Benjamin and Katharine.
However, there are many isolated facts relating to 18th century NJ
Coddingtons that cannot be accounted for, so I suppose we can return the
bits of evidence of this William to the unexplained category.
In truth, John I. used Benjamin (whom he termed "very shadowy") and
Katharine as a solution of convenience to a lot of Coddington genealogy
problems. He gave him Joseph (abt 1730-1806), who begat the now prolific
branch of Ulster Co. Coddingtons, Benjamin (1730-abt 1793) who certainly
begat the Indiana and less certainly the Kentucky Coddingtons (who all
moved to Ohio and changed their name to Corrington), and Christopher
(1731-1784) who begat the Pennsylvania and Orange Co. NY Coddingtons.
These are pretty much all the early diasporas from New Jersey. This bit
of genealogical legerdemain is probably the weakest yet most important
link in Coddington genealogy. I let it stand because I don't have
anything better to replace it. One could choose not to accept all the
links that are not proven, but that would result in dozens, if not
hundreds, of unlinked small family trees in the database, and you'd have
nowhere to record the suggested connections. It is easier, I think, to
keep the suggested connections (which makes navigating the tree much
easier) and instead comment how weak they may be.

Coddington, Moses, Letter to William Robeson, (In possession of E. R.
[Edwin Robeson?] MacKethan III (ex copy received from Merlyn
Coddington), 19 Sep 2000.), 28 Jun 1807.
Dear Sir,
We received your much esteemed favor of the
9th inst, whereby we observe your anxiety, or that of
you wifes to obtain some information respecting her
kindred and relatives in this part of the world since
her fathers removal, and have now set down with
no small degree of pleasure to give you and her such
account of them as will no doubt be satisfactory --
My brother James who lives about a mile f[rom] here
I expect will also write to you in answer to the Letter
now before me. -- On the Death of my Father there
were Eleven of us living, Seven Sons and four Daughters
since when three have died, one Son and two Daughters.
the names of those who are now living, (at least I have
not heard of any of their deaths) are William, David, Benjm,
Lucy, married to a John Jonas, Samuel, James, Moses, and
Elizabeth, the youngest, married to a Mr Caleb Brokaw
near this place. -- Your Unkle William the Eldest
resides in Allegany County on the Yohogany River, the last
account I have of him he had three children living. --
Your Unkles Benjm and Samuel and Aunt Lucy are all
living in the same Settlement, Neighbors to each other, but
how many children they have I am unable to tell; they
I believe are all doing well -- If you wish to write to
any of them you must direct to Cumberland, the County
Town, as my Brother William is a Magistrate and
frequently attends Court there, this is the best method I can devise
of your getting more particular information from them.--
My Brother David lives on Staten Island opposite Amboy
he has four children all Boys living he is in a fine
way and doing well -- In case my Brother James should
neglect writing I will just mention that he has two children
living, the eldest a Son s name is William Stone after his
great Grand Father. -- My Sister Elizabeth has two
children -- I have four children, Ann, Eliza, David, and
Benjamin all hearty growing children. -- thus I have
endeavored to give you a straight account of the
numerous descendants of your Grand Father which will
probably meet with your desires and answer your expectations
thus you see Providence has blessed the Family of the
Coddington's with length of days and many descendants
As to your wife, she must be peculiarly lonesome in a
distant coutnry with respect to Kindred, but let not this be disca_y
ing since we have the means of in our power of commu
nication by Letter which hereafter may afford comfort
to her as we shall always be happy to hear from her
and will be ready cheerfully to give to give [sic] her such
information frorm time to time as occasion may require
My Mother died the 7th of March last after an illness of
three months and upwards, she had nearly arrived to her
74th year, if she had lived to the 11th of March it would
just have compleated it. -- She supported a pious character
for many years, and is now without doubt in possession of that
rest which alone is reserved for the People of God. --
You say nothing in your Letter about your Mother
nor about your Cousin William Stone as I have
not heard from him these many Years I wish in
your next you would ket me know if he is living
and where, also be so kind as to inform me of your
Mother, and how many children you have and I would like
to have a little description of the Country you live
in if not too much trouble. -- I do not know
that ever I shall be able to make you a visit, but
will be happy at any time and all times _____ from
you and if you can make it convenient more happy
to see you here. In the mean time, not having any
thing else particular to add, I shall conclude with my
best wishes for your health and happiness
and that he who is the supreme disposer of E____
at the close of Life give you a better and more
enduring inheritance beyond the Grave, and with
sincere respects to your wife and children wherein my
wife and family join me I am
Your affectionate Unkle
Moses Coddington

I am confused. I thought I descended from Benjamin and Katherine Martin
Coddington. William wasn't married to Katherine Martin, Katherine Martin
was his mother. William's wife was named Ann. ---
I don't know what is what now, other than my ancestor was Samuel
Coddington who was born in 1765 (New Jersey) and married Mary Jones abt
1800. Their daughter Charlotte Coddington Frey was my gggggm. Charlotte
Coddington and sister Anna Coddington were mentioned in their father's
will.
Samuel had a brother William who also lived in the Allegany now Garrett
County, MD area. It was a supposition that Samuel and William had a
brother named Benjamin.
Joseph Bradley's mother was a Coddington desc. and researcher in the
1960's and donated a picture of our ancestors to the Garrett County
Historical Society.
On Dec. 17, 1850 Samuel Coddington's estate paid to William Frey and
Charlotte, his wife(gggggp) and Isabel Beall( my ggggm).
Does someone have something that can clear this up for me. Is there
documentation that my Samuel Coddington who married Mary Jones was a son
of David Coddington? I would really appreciate the help.

Hi Candee,
Your ancestry from William and Katherine Martin is quite rare...most
Garrett Co. Coddingtons descend from David and Ann Stone, three of whose
sons (William, Benjamin, Samuel) opted for Govt. provided free land in
the "territories" of the panhandle after the Revolution. I guess
primogeniture forced them to abandon the fertile flatlands of New
Jersey. One good source of the history is Schlosnagle, Steven, Garrett
County: a History of Maryland's Tableland, (McClain Printing Co,
Parsons, WV 1978).
I'd like to hear more of your line. Please email me directly if you
would prefer.
