I am a descendant of Ruth Coddington, daughter of William Coddington and Nancy Price. She was my gg grandmother. My gg grandfather, her husband, was Francis Ireland. Ruth's half sister Ann, daughter of William Coddington and Ann Smith married Thomas Jefferson Ireland. I believe Thomas was the brother of Francis, and wondered if you had anything to confirm or disprove this. Thomas and Ann moved from Warren County OH to Indiana, and after Ann's death to Tazewell County IL which is where Francis and Ruth had moved in the late 1850's. Everything fits, but I have not been able to confirm or disprove. Any help you could offer would be appreciated.

Merlyn and I corresponded until soon before his death. We shared an interest in the Coddington clan as a whole. The last version of his database he sent me was 11/23/2001, and the one on rootsweb is feb 24, 2002. Hard to know what he changed.
In general, Merlyn had better info on recent Coddingtons (>1930) and Coddingtons not descended from Stockdale, whereas I have more early Coddingtons and better sourcing.
If anyone would like help with Coddington genealogy, I will try. email is coddingt(a)ix.netcom.com

Merlyn has been sorely missed. He was quite knowledgeable and was more then just willing to share the information that he had.
Does anyone know if his records have been passed on to another genealogist or can someone contact his family?

Yes. From what I understand he was a really great researcher and very helpful to those who contacted him. A very deep loss to the genealogical world.

Linda, I also had a message to Merlyn bounce about a month ago. I checked the Coddington mailing list archives, and found that, sadly, he passed away about a year ago. It sounded as if he was a great help to many Coddington researchers, and many here will miss him.

I am one from the land called UK so,Following on from Bob of New Zealand. I agree with his views on the mis spelling over the years of the surname .
However in my view it comes down to a 'toss of the coin' which way you go as there are records that show Cuddington families existed in the 1881 British Census and the 1880 USA census ,as they do to day.(Even IGI records the name in 1725). Bob refers to Merlyn,an expert on the USA . He published his data base some time ago containing many thousand entries relating to 'Coddington' (unfortunately I did not record the web site). Merlyn died, a sad loss to genealogy.
On the basis that there are many more 'Coddington's in the USA. Perhaps this line would be your best line to follow.
Good luck
Peter (UK)

Let there be no doubt about it, Jennifer, the True Faith is spelt with an 'o'. As very early parish clerks could hardly spell their own names, and the subjects could not read to correct the mistakes, this got a right bashing in the records, and as a result family members rejoice under the titles of Coddrington, Codrington, Codyngton, de Codinton (in 1289), and a plethora of imaginative variations besides. I can't help you with your tree, as no member of my family went to America to my knowledge, from the land called Uk. Your greatest hope would be the US Coddington expert, and I can't volunteer him to spend untold ages helping you. But he is generous with his profound knowledge, and as soon as he sees your plea I am sure he will give you a steer or two. The most prolific with assistance, Merlyn, I am afraid you are about a year too late for. Good luck in your search. Bob.
