Updates to the Coddington database have been posted at the addresses below. Stockdale's tree now has 12,239 individuals, the other 28 trees many fewer (see previous posts). In all, 4479 Coddingtons (3534 before 1930). Documented by 722 sources cited 35,520 times.
In particular, am most of the way through entering data from a fair chunk of the papers of Herbert Guibord Coddington at the New Jersey History Society Archives (he wrote The Coddington Family (1907), Coddington Records (1920), and Coddington Records Number Two (1930)). Much of the information on 18th and 19th century Coddingtons comes from these publications. These archives contain what survives of his source material.

Of the 29 known, substantial, unconnected Coddington trees, only 6 stem from new immigrants to the US or Canada. Three are Irish, three English...not many (and not many individuals).
Therefore it's interesting to look at census data to see how many are being missed (not counting those missed by the census, of course).
In 1850 there were 14 Coddingtons born outside North America or who had foreign fathers. Most were single entries in other's households. Only two seemed to be reproducing.
In 1860 there were 13 Coddingtons born outside North America or who had foreign fathers. Not sure if any had families.
In 1870 there were 17 Coddingtons born outside North America or who had foreign fathers. A few of the new ones had families.
In 1880 there were 14 Coddingtons born outside North America or who had foreign fathers. One had a large family (in Michigan), but most, again, were singleton entries in other households.
I think that's 44 immigrants max over 30 years, but a good fraction of the later ones are the 1850's that "took" getting older. And it seems that most of the rest did not reproduce.
Stockdale, on the other hand, had 2,177 Coddington descendants by 1880, and families with children born about then had been here for about 9-10 generations.
So there seems to have been a steady but quite small trickle of other Coddington immigrants. However, if your ancestor's last name is Coddington, and they were here by ca. 1900, we are very likely relatives.

This man is a real pain. After Stockdale (12,000+) he has the most people connected to him (462). And it's not like there are no possibilities, just that nothing quite jibes.
The most likely is that Joseph 1763 is the same as Joseph (bapt. 12 Dec 1762, Minisink, NY-18 Apr. 1847), son of Christopher Coddington (1731-1784). The latter Joseph is credited with the 1790 census, which lists one male <16, and 3 females. As we do not know the names of his wife or children, none are listed. However, Joseph 1763 had Samuel, Margaret, Fannie, and wife Sarah, which fits. Also, Christopher (his putative father) was born in New Jersey, which might explain why most of Joseph 1763's children were also born there. Christopher died in Northumberland Co., Pennsylvania, which shows a connection to PA. Nevertheless, Joseph abt 1762 was definitely baptized in New York, not Pennsylvania, and he supposedly died in 1847 (place unknown), not 1833. Joseph 1763 definitely died in Warren Co., Ohio. Also, Joseph abt 1762 had a brother, Benjamin (bapt. 28 Jun 1758) who moved to Ohio as well, and died in Washington Co. Ohio. This Benjamin probably moved to Ohio bef. 1810; J!
oseph 1763 moved abt 1795. Washington Co. is not close to Warren Co., but the Ohio River would have been a ready connection. Two sons of Benjamin 1758 were born in Northumberland Co., PA, further documentation that this family had roots or land in Pennsyvlania.
Thus the only real sticking point are the death dates--a discrepancy of 14 years. Are there others?

After sending all those unconnecteds last night, today I figured out John Case Coddington (1847-). He is very likely the son of John Leonard Coddington and Lucinda Case!
Several lines of evidence connect John Case Coddington to John Leonard Coddington and Lucinda Case. The first is his middle name, the same as his putative mother's surname. Second, John Leonard remarried in 1847, so Lucinda probably died in childbirth or soon thereafter. Third, although John Case appears in John Merlin's (his grandfather) household in the 1860 federal census, aged 12 (which also fits), he could not have been the son of John Merlin and "Sally," as she would have been 59 at his birth. Although Christine Leonard's memories give his wife's name as Rebecca M., this is actually an interpolation by the typist, Karen Dickson, not a transcript of Christine's oral history. It appears that Ms. Dickson may have confused John Leonard, whose second wife was named Rebecca Ann (not Rebecca M.), with his son John Case, who did have three sons and two daughters, more or as named by Christine Leonard.

Notes:
Ronald Jay Porter relates a family tradition that his great grandfather was an Enoch G. Coddington from Mohawk Valley in New York. An "E. Gideon Coddington" appears on the 1870 census in Susquehanna Co., Pennsylvania, B. New York, with a son, Henry, aged 2. Ronald's grandfather was certainly Joseph Henry Coddington, born 1868 in Susquehanna Co. Based on this evidence, it seems likely that the "E. Gideon" of the census and his son Henry are Enoch G. Coddington and Joseph Henry of the Porter ancestors.

Supreme Court upholds death penalty for Tahoe killer
By Gregory Crofton, Tribune staff writer
A man who murdered two women and sexually assaulted two girls in a South Lake Tahoe trailer park in 1987 moved one step closer to death July 3 when California's Supreme Court voted 5 to 2 to uphold his death sentence.
Herbert James Coddington, a professional gambler, murdered Maybelle Martin, the 69-year-old owner of a Reno modeling agency, and her friend, Dorothy Walsh, 73, and sexually assaulted a 12- and 14-year-old girl in his rented trailer at Tahoe Verde Mobile Home Park.
